Some unique useful products from peoples all around the world made from unusual and sometimes repurposed materials. The prices seem high but the claim of helping these people build a business and their standard of living puts that into context.

Beautiful setting for a unique shopping experience

We have been to Ten Thousand Villages several times when we have visited Montreat. It is a delightful place to visit in the campus. Everything in the store is lovely and unique. We have bought several gifts here. Even if you don't buy anything, it is worth a visit. Situated on Lake Susan, the setting is peaceful and very tranquil.

Crowded and touristy
Nov 2017 • Couples
We wanted to hike and explore and someone recommended this place - it was mobbed with people and the hiking trails aren't clearly marked and we kept hitting dead ends.

We got annoyed after a while and left - was a waste of time to come here.

This chain of stores always has the most intriguing items, including jewelry, chocolates, household furnishings, etc. The staff was friendly without being intrusive.

Worth a Trip Up the Valley
Dec 2016 • Couples
Ten Thousand Villages is a great place to Christmas shop, or gift shop of any kind. They are a fair-trade establishment with contacts to craftspeople and artisans all over the world. Buy a scarf from Peru, a creche from Burkina Faso, a bowl from Thailand - the entire globe is represented there. The interesting crafts come in a wide variety of price ranges, so there is something in every range. These are not generic, mass-produced curios, but hand-crafted in exotic places. The good thing is, that the artisans are fairly compensated for their work. They are partners in this venture, not someone who was taken advantage of. Buy here, and feel good about helping small and household industry in places that need it!
