May River State Park protects sections of the river from the Virginia state line to the confluence with Dan River in Mayodan. As one of the newest parks in the system, amenities are limited at this time. Currently, the Mayo Mountain Access near Mayodan has a visitor center, picnic area and a couple short trails. Near the Virginia state line is Fall Creek Falls on a tributary of Mayo River, a surprisingly big waterfall. There are also a couple river access points for paddling the river. Trails are overgrown and parking lot was trashy. Not at all like last year's visit. Never very busy except on weekends.

Mayo River may not be a large state park in North Carolina, but it brings along with it the history of what this land was used for before becoming a state park. The picnic area and restrooms were clean, as well as the land. Its well maintained. The park office is small and their staff are willing to spend time talking to you and answering questions.…

My wife and I participated in the first day hike 2019, along with about 25 other hikers. The Ranger was very nice and stopped several times to explain the history of the area. The hike was about 2 miles and the weather was great for a hike. This is a great park for short hikes.
