My wife and I hiked the six miles to and from Waterrock Knob Overlook and Fork Ridge Overlook (follow the circular white blaze) and it was one of our favorite day hikes in the area. If it’s as clear a day as we had, you’ll be taking lots of photos!

Two TIPS:

- go all 500 ft to the top of Waterrock Knob; resist the temptation to stop at one of several resting areas. You will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view.

- pay close attention to the ground about 50’ from the top of Waterrock Knob and you’ll see a faded blue arrow spray painted on a large, flat rock. After you take in the scenery at the top, go back to the arrow and follow the narrow path it points to about 1/2 mile to the site of a plane crash from the early 1970’s. Fascinating.

This location offers great views and adventure from both the parking lot, where the restrooms and visitors center are located, and from the trail summit going up the mountain. The elevation at the parking lot is over 5800 feet, resulting in stunning, amazing long range views. You do not need to climb to the summit to experience these amazing views. The hike up to the summit is absolutely NOT EASY, requiring some tricky maneuvering around stumps and large, slick rocks. I recommend people who are not used to mountain hiking or not in exceptional physical shape NOT attempt the climb to the summit. If you do make that climb, you will be treated to some of the best vistas anywhere, period. Note that there are several picnic tables around the parking lot, as well as nice, clean restrooms. The visitors center is really nice, offering many diverse souvenirs of the area. Enjoy!

Hiking to the top of Waterrock Knob is EXCITING and SCENIC. For those not up to this .5 mile hike to the top the views from the Parking Lot and Visitors Center are still terrific. The hike is two sections .2 miles is Pedestrian Hike on paved pathway to stone wall overlook. Then the hike ascends fairly steeply up the mountain the next .3 miles.
In .5 miles the trail climbs 400 ft. so that is 80 ft. per tenth of a mile. The trail is well marked, is sometimes a dirt path, but mainly a rocky path (almost forming steps). Some areas have stairs built to go around steep or dangerous areas. The views from the top are spectacular. We went on a Monday in May and there was little traffic. The entire time we were at the top and ate our picnic lunch it was just the two of us. So peaceful and beautiful.
Be sure to take water, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and snacks. There are no places to get food or drinks on the Parkway.

This is a must if visiting Maggie Valley. The views are extraordinary. When at the top be sure to enjoy the views and if you are lucky enough to be alone, just listen. The peaceful quiet is like nothing I have ever experienced. GPS is spotty, signage is lacking, but figure it out the old fashion way and you will not be disappointed.

Tough hike for me--the rocks were not smooth and only parts had guardrails to hang on to. I think I should have paid attention to the people who stopped at the pedestrian overlook which was only .2 miles. The views were good but the ones from the parking lot and overlooks were even better so don't feel bad skipping this if you're running short on time.

Got here too late in the day, our only views were on the road up to waterrock knob. But we came here to find the airplane crash. We started way too late as it was getting dark on us. I didn’t do enough research and thought it was near the orange ribbons on the trees not too far into the sketchily hike. It was muddy and quite the adventure. With that said it was my son and I favorite hike on our trip. The side trail to find the airplane not the hike up to waterrock knob. We needed up turning around and after reading more up on it we were prob pretty close. We got off the mountain to our car and it was pitch black. There were still others out still looking. I hope they made it back safely. I told my son we would be back some day and try to find it again!

Beautiful views. Some picnic tables or you can tailgate if you want. Can bring own chairs to sit & enjoy the view. If you decide to hike up the top, make sure you have appropriate shoes and are in good shape. Very steep climb in some areas. I was huffing & puffing almost immediately due to steep incline. Found it very strenuous. My hubby made it to the top—I made it 3/4 or so—he said got lot steeper as went on. Beautiful views though. Guess I’ll need to beef up my aerobics & try again next year! Saw lot of families, all ages of people hiking up the mtn. Very family & pet friendly.

Beautiful scenery at the Visitor Center, nearly 360 degree view. A few picnic tables. Very popular at sunset, but so pretty. Arrived nearly an hour before and it was crowded already! Climb to the top is .5 miles but fairly rigorous. Loved it though! We did the climb after a picnic lunch and came back for sunset.

Steep but easy hike up to mountain top. Lovely views. Optional hike to plane crash is worth it but definitely hard. My husband and I are in decent shape but we had a rough time on the way back. Hiking shoes a must.

This is a great place to view the sunrise and sunset. The views from the parking lot are excellent and often popular. The hike to the top is short but steep, definitely makes your heart rate go up. It is a different view from the top but not unobstructed.
