Work sent me to South Carolina in early August on a weeks notice. I took my wife, three boys 8,7, and 5 y/o. Captain was very accommodating and worked us into his schedule. He also helped me find lodging in the area. Due to the chance of bad weather, Captain made a last minute switch in boat ramps to ensure the safety of my family. He was waiting for us when we arrived. My boys and I wanted to catch big fish, sharks preferably. The trip started off by going to catch baitfish. The boys had a blast watching captain use the birds as fishfinders and throwing "pancakes." After throwing the cast net for a while he let the boys fish for crocker, drum, and other baitfish. Safety was always the top priority, then our dream of catching a shark followed close behind. Captain already had baitfish for the trip but thought letting the boys fish for some would help them enjoy the trip better. After the live wells were full we headed out for the creatures of the deep blue sea. We fished the intercoastal waterway and bay. The whole time he helped me bait lines, told stories, and used his charming personality too help a slow day. Being an avid fisherman I understood that tides, weather, time of day, and time of year can drastically effect the quality of fishing. None of these were in our favor that day. Captain stayed persistent, and never let the smile on his face waiver. After pulling up on his "magic" spot the reels started screaming. Within 30 minutes reeled in three sting rays/skates. The two biggest were estimated to weigh 75 and over a 100 pounds. He used the utmost caution while handling the fish, but still allow us to get photos. He never watched the clock. I had one of the best fishing trips of my life. The only small problem was that I didn't get my first shark. When we were unloading, after my wife walked away of course, I asked him if we could do it again later that week. He felt awful that we didn't get a shark so he once again was able to rearrange his schedule and allowed my family to fish for very discounted rate. The second trip was just as great a the first. Very professional. Truly cares about his customers. When I Finally pulled in my driveway back in Ohio my text message alert went off. It was captain just wanting to know if we made it home safe. I feel like I made a friend for life.

We have fished with Captain Ponytail for Stripers on the Roanoke and reds in Georgetown, SC. We ALWAYS catch fish, and have a great time. Sometimes we fish half a day, others a full one and are never at a loss for words on how great this guide is. He enjoys himself most helping the novice learn how to fish as well as helping the more experienced have a good time. The Captain has many years of experienced and Coast Guard approved, no one is more knowledgable about the waters he takes you on or the fish he helps you catch.

Capt.Rod is an enjoyable person and knows his " stuff " when it comes to outdoors and catching fish.
The Roanoke River where we fished is undeveloped and serene setting that takes you back to nature.
I would recommend this trip to the most experienced fisherperson to the beginner.
This was our second April trip in 2 years and will go again.
By the way " WE WERE ABLE TO CATCH A GOOD AMOUNT OF NICE STRIPPED
BASS AND CATFISH "
Capt.Rod is a great " FISHING BUDDY "

Captain Rod was top notch in every way. His knowledge of the area was great - we went out with him in Oriental, NC and then met up with him in Georgetown, SC also. Great experience each time. Such a pleasant person, great boat, great gear and he knows where the fish are!! Great Guide!!

My cousin and I went out with Rod yesterday with our wives. I've used many guides and have fished many private boats across inland, coastal, and offshore fishing in the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas. Bottom line is this: he's the nicest, most accommodating guide you could ever hire (only three rules: no bananas, no pistachios, no aerosol sun screens, which are the same rules on my boat).

The Avenger boat he uses is absolutely extraordinary, and he gets a new one every year or so. I'd love to buy the one we just fished on, as Avenger wants him to work out the new model, but I'm probably a year away, but thinking about it. Every piece of equipment he has on board is first class, and there's 2X what you might expect.

His local knowledge is extraordinary, offshore, onshore, and local history. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or just wanting to put you kids on a boat, there's no one I can recommend over than Rob "Captain Ponytail" Thomas.

And after I've fished the stripper run with him in the Roanoke River and chased giant reds in Oriental, I'll update this report.

Captain Rod is a top notch fishing guide he has great gear and is very knowledgeable. He worked very hard to put us on fish. He was really easy to talk to and fun to fish with. I would tell anyone that is looking for a fishing guide to give him a call.
