An extraordinary setting and a special discovery. Living in the adjacent Henderson County, of Lake Toxaway we were aware, of this privately owned Reserve, not so. It is of the higher elevations of these Smokies, a steep steep climb up from the lake level. It offers a real understanding of this temperate rain forest region of WNC.
The small group tour is a delight (tour busses cannot get up here), and the walk through the gardens takes a little more than 2 hours. Enjoying a picnic lunch in the grounds thereafter caps a experience.
Go to the website southernhighlandsreserve.org for planning a visit.

Such a special reserve of native species! The nurturing approach to species restoration and dedication to maintaining and restoring this area with graceful, artistic flair makes it a true Appalachian jewel. A pleasure to visit. It has been some time since I visited and look forward to a return!

We have no words to describe the beauty of this incredible place! So much care and attention to detail goes into these gardens. The vision that went into the design and creation of SHR shows an obvious love of the natural beauty here. We couldn't have enjoyed our visit more.

I understand this garden is open by apointment only. We were lucky enough to be invited and what a hidden gem it is! This garden is not only beautiful but important to the ecology of North Carolina and has been working to preserve and re-forest Red Pines and to catalog their garden’s native plants. They have their own greenhouses where they cultivate many varieties of plants.

This is a spectacular garden, but before you jump in your car: 1)This is a private native plant arboretum and research center. 2) They open their doors once a month, and for special tours and events, educational workshops and an annual plant sale. 3) Groups are led--you don't just wander around and hang out. 4) And it's kind of expensive. I just wanted to get that out of the way because you don't want to get to the top of a remote mountain and be surprised! Check the website!

My group had a horticultural interest, so we were led by the Director and Executive Director, both of whom are very knowledgeable and personable. The environment is special, the plants are wonderful and the landscape architecture design is beautiful and unique. Stunning experience.

Are you willing to go a little out of the way for an unforgettable experience? Southern Highlands Reserve is a phenomenal high-elevation landscape that will reward the effort to visit. Wander your way through the well-maintained paths to observe the breathtaking views and intriguing plant communities on the site. Make sure your phone’s memory has plenty of space, because you’ll want to take a bunch of photos in these beautiful gardens. The staff are gracious and helpful, with great amenities for guests. I visited during the spring Native Plant symposium, which was well-organized with great food from local businesses. Make sure to plan plenty of time to make sure you have time to meander through all the garden paths. Southern Highlands Reserve is the most memorable garden that I’ve visited this year. Well worth a visit!

Waightstill Avery Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution have received a "true mountain top experience" in volunteering for Southern Highlands Reserve by cleaning seeds from cones of red spruce and potting up hundreds of red spruce. We are a perfect fit with Southern Highlands Reserve with a concentration on historic preservation, conservation and education.
This is a must stop visit at Toxaway. You will not regret your tour of this native plant arboretum and research center. Molly Tartt, Historian/Librarian-Waightstill Avery Chapter, NSDAR.
