Lake Lure lives up to its reputation as a destination vacation spot, with plenty of food venues, stores, and attractions. The scenery is impressive, from the placid lake, to the whitewater river, icy waterfalls, and steep mountain sides.

However, we were not prepared for how out of the way Lake Lure is. If you stay in a mountain cottage, plain on an hour to reach downtown Asheville, 45 minutes at least to Hendersonville or Black Mountain if the traffic is heavy or the weather bad. Coming from Texas, we are used to wide open roads driven at speed. Lake Lure is all about S turns, hairpins, and steep inclines, at 30 mph or significantly less. And, in the fog it's nearly impossible to more than creep along. So, give yourself plenty of time and watch the weather reports! Just saying....

Thank you Michaela for your review! Yes it is quite a different drive up through the roads in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, but they wind around with a purpose to showcase the beauty of the lake and the mountains. I hope you found it worth the drive. I myself love taking the drive up through Bat Cave. The river is just beautiful! It takes me longer to make that drive because I'm always stopping to take pics! Come back for fall color in October if you get the chance!

So over Labor Day weekend we visited Lake Lure with two other families for the first time. Had a really great experience! Through Airbnb we rented a large 4 bedroom cabin overlooking Lake Lure and the majestic views of the mountains. One recommendation on accommodations is that while we had a great time and enjoyed our stay I would recommend getting a lake front home if possible.

The Lake itself is man made and is neatly nestled in a valley between several mountains. (Reminded me of Washington state) It deepest part is over 140 feet deep so it is a pretty big lake. We rented a pontoon boat for the day and we easily saw the whole lake. The water was perfect to swim in and there was a lot of non-wake areas and alcoves to park the boat to swim and fish. The lake seemed clean to me and was very enjoyable.

Surrounding the Lake Lure area is the iconic Chimney Rock and Hendersonville NC. Chimney Rock and the village is less than a five minute drive from Lake Lure and is a very small version of a Gatlinburg type downtown area. Hendersonville is the apple producing area of NC and while we were there they had their Apple Festival going. For all the hype this was very mediocre at best.

I think in the fall to see the colors Lake Lure and the surrounding areas would be fantastic.

Had a nice time passing through the town. Shops and restaurants are plentiful. Most shops carry similar items. Behind some shops you can access the river. This was enjoyable on a hot day to dip your feet in. Its scenic, clean and serene. Make sure you see it.

Have sent several reviews and rated them highly. This past experience has changed. In July 2022 son and future daughter-in-law. talked to a male employee about wedding plans. They mentioned everything they wanted at a wedding. The employee said would put a contract together and send it to them. They never received the contract and made several phone calls. After about a month past their visit, they were advised that this employee had quit and left no records of what they talked about for the wedding. They had an appointment with a female employee and drove 2 hours to meet with her in September of 2022. While on the road they were advised that she did not work at the Inn anymore. When they got to the Inn and asked to speak with the manager, Manger told them that their date was still good for September 6, 2023. That everything would be taken care of and sent to them. Nov. 4, 2022, had to make a call to the Inn again because no contracts, phone calls, or emails from the Inn. Their wedding was going to be in the range of 15K to 25K. They were told on Nov. 5, 2022, that the Inn was having a manager's meeting, and everything would be taken care of. Because of everything, they have gone thru since July. The Inn has lost their business, they have found another place to do their business with.

We spent a long weekend in Asheville and took a different route home so we could stop by Lake Lure. All we knew about the area was that a scene from Dirty Dancing was filmed there. We stopped at the Welcome Center to ask what we could see or where to go to get the best view of things. The woman behind the desk was very unwelcoming. She acted annoyed with my questions. When I asked about where the movie was filmed, she asked "Which movie?" although the room is filled with references to Dirty Dancing. She was also quick to correct me that "PART" of the movie was filmed there. Really? That movie may be the only reason many people come to visit your Lake. Why have a "Welcome Center" if you staff it with people who act as if you shouldn't be there? Maybe she was having a bad day. In that profession, you need to take a sick day if that's the case.

Stayed 2 nights attending a wedding ceremony. Beautiful lake and mountain views with a golf course. Good place to unwind although the service staff at the restaurant were not very friendly.

Went in here today (17/7/19) to get some information on places to stay in the area. Was made to feel very unwelcome the woman manning the centre needs to find a different vocation.
Signs up saying no loitering. Come on people are looking at the information and displays.
Lake lure and the surrounding area is great

Was excited to bring an out of towner to Lake Lure for a boat ride and dinner. After parking we went into the welcome center to see what was on display and what recommendations they might have. When we walked ina woman was standing by the door with some cleaning supplies in hand and looked at us as though we had interrupted her. I then asked if they were closed, thinking that perhaps the place was not open. She said sternly- yes we are open but the bathrooms are closed. We were quite taken aback at her outburst and obvious dislike of having been interrupted . Needless to say we looked around a minute or two and then made our escape. I apologized to my guest for the unwelcome behavior we had received. I volunteer at a Visitor Center in North Carolina and am sensitive to the first impressions tourists receive when they walk in. From other reviews, I can only hope this person was having a bad day and treats visitors with more respect on her “good days”. And I certainly hope she is not a paid employee.

We didn't need to stop in this visit, but for a first visit to the area, the Visitors Center is very conveniently located next to the beach area. We were here in August and the town was very busy. Coming back a few days after Labor Day, the town was extremely quiet which made it really nice to wander around. We're looking forward to returning for the Fall leaf season.
