A wonderful trip down the French Broad River. No civilization in site. Very relaxing. Great group activity. The staff was amazing, very helpful and gave us clear instructions for our trip. It is not guided but you can't go wrong with the instructions given. We would definitely do this again!

I am the woman in the previous review whose kayak overturned because of branches and trees almost across the entire river in one spot. My life preserver straps got totally entangled in the underwater branches, to the point that I was pinned under the kayak and I couldn't move at all. I actually don't know how I managed to get my head above water, but I did in the nick of time. I have never kayaked in a river, only lakes, so I didn't understand the dangers. In talking to some experienced kayakers I learned that this is a very dangerous situation when there are branches and trees in the river, and that it is not uncommon for people to die because of getting tangled under water. If you take this trip, be sure the most experienced of your group is the leader, and be sure you all have a knife. We took the 7 mile trip. I asked the owner if the shorter trips are any different, and he said no. I believe it is false advertising to say this is an easy kayak float down a peaceful river.

Having family in the area my husband and I spend a week in western Carolina every summer. We love the rivers! We have gone on several tubing and canoe trips on parts of the French Broad and other rivers in the vicinity. Therefore, when my husband and I read the reviews for Lazy Otter, we had to check it out! We were launched at 11:30 a.m. with three others in individual Kayaks. It was tricky to find the location due to confusing directions and virtually no signage until you arrive. Once there, you will find a nice clean building, changing rooms and bathrooms. Each person has a sealed cell phone attached to their vessel in case of emergency but mostly so you can be tracked by Lazy Otter personnel. They need to keep track of you to plan pick up when you end your trip. This part of the river is DEEP. You will not get stuck on rocks but you will have to navigate around many downed trees. This was not difficult in a canoe. However, the three Kayakers did have a perilous situation. We we able to rescue them but only because we flowed slowly down the river hardly needing to paddle and were behind them about 20 minutes. One had capsized trying to navigate around a huge tree blocking most of the river. She was unable to touch and was clinging to a tree while one captured her paddle and another had her Kayak. Her life jacket was hooked on part of the tree and it took her awhile to get free. All ended well. We ended our 7 mile trip at 3:45 due to the delay helping the Kayakers.

Excellent service and very safe. I was very impressed with each boat having an emergency phone which also tracked kayak position. The team knew when we would arrive at the end dock. We did not have to wait for a slower group to finish, and they were able to return us to our vehicle, long before the other group had even finished.

have been on the French Broad over 50 times in the last 10yrs, mainly the wesfeldt to bent tree run and bent tree to hominy creek(thru the biltmore estate) and onto french broad river park. tried the run from lazy otter to wesfeldt(7mi run) saturday 5 Sept, put in at lazy otter, matt and crew were very accommodating, and informative....great run, early morning 8:30, misty, eerie with all the spiderwebs in the trees covered with dew...plenty of deep water compared to aforementioned trips...no rocks or shallows to contend with...tree lined banks, peaceful, no highway noise...is definitely the prettiest part of the river so far...will continue my journeys upstream...Lazy Otter website and videos very informative...thanks gang
