Walk wasn't too strenuous. Beautiful view. Can't wait to go back in the fall when the leaves are in full color.

Nice small park with good easy hike. Not too far from Durham. Ok views, easy parking, not too many people. Good 2 hours with family.

Good hike to start off the new year
Jan 2020
We met up with some other friends to hike the loop trail at Occoneechee the morning of January 1, 2020. We had age ranges from 9 to 70. It was my first time hiking this trail.
This area is a popular hiking spot and parking was tight on New Year's Day. We arrived about 10 and there was some parking still available. By 10:30, the parking lot was full and cars were having to park further out on the road in.
We hiked the Mountain Loop trail which is a little over 2 miles. There are a couple of ascents that can get you breathing heavy, but nothing too bad or difficult. Everyone in our group managed fine. We went counterclockwise around the loop, which is the direction I would recommend. On the far side of the loop from where you start, you come to the Eno River, which is a nice place to stop and take some pictures. A little further along, you come to the bottom of the old quarry and there is a little side trail where you can get a better look up the quarry walls. The main trail then goes up the mountain. At the top, I suggest taking the .01 mile Overlook Trail. The overlook area is very scenic and provides a good view over the landscape and Hillsborough. You then backtrack along the Overlook Trail back to the main trail and follow it back to the parking lot.
Overall, this is a relatively short hike that provides some ups and downs as well as some scenic views along the Eno River and from the overlook at the top of the mountain. Without traveling further west, probably about as close to a mountain hike as you can get in the RDU area.
There is a restroom facility and some picnic tables in the parking lot area. It also only about a 5 minute drive from downtown Hillsborough, so it is convenient to grab lunch at one of the restaurants there either before or after your hike.
I look forward to returning to this trail in the spring/summer when there is more foliage as I am sure it would be even more picturesque.

Very Nice Place to Hike
Oct 2019
We decided to take this hike while in the area. We took the long trail, covering most of the ground between all the trails in the park. Some of the trails had some challenging parts with steep grades, but overall I would consider it an easy to moderate hike for a person of middle age and moderate activity levels. The scenery was beautiful and the overlooks had nice sweeping views. The parking area was quite crowded, but dissipated well along the trails and we didn't see very many people while on the actual trails. nice little day trip!

Good hiking

There are a lot of trails here, so you'll be able to do several visits to hike them all. Some are up, up, uphill. Most wind up, down and around. There is also a lake and picnic area that is relatively flat, so you can take a short walk around the lake if you aren't up for a strenuous hike. If you hike up to the very top, there is a scenic overlook where you can see the river and a little waterfall in the far distance. It's a very serene spot so close to cities and towns - you feel like you're in the mountains.

Love finding hidden gems nearby and accessible
Aug 2018 • Couples
In the area for a family visit and had this destination recommend to us by friends. My wife and I are regular hikers in similar park settings in Tennessee so some of the negatives mentioned in the reviews - rough surfaces, noise, too many stairs and not enough switch-backs - either weren't surprises or for us not really negatives,

A few of the reviews document the nature of the Mt. Loop Trail and the vistas from the Overlook very well, so read them. I would add a couple of items. We hiked west from the parking lot and stayed on the Mt. Loop Trail until it reached the connection with the Brown Elfin Knob Trail. We took the BEK Trail toward the Overlook. It is marked as a 0.10-mile trail. Actually, it is just about three times that distance to an intersection with a gravel road. Continue straight on the road and you will reach signage that directs you to the Overlook. It is spectacular and shouldn't be missed. We backtracked the BEK Trail and returned to the parking lot via the remainder of the Mt. Loop Trail. We estimated about a 3.4-mile trip in about 1:45 - a comfortable pace for grandparents.
Some random comments - The Trail maps in the wooden stands are excellent., Take water and wear sturdy shoes, the terrain IS rugged at times. Trails (particularly the Mt. Loop Trail) are well marked with signage or blazes. If you are interested in fishing, the ponds are pretty inviting. NC regulations prevail.
