By all means, pay the money to take a tour of this extraordinary house. The docents are well-informed and happy to answer any questions about the cultural and temporal context of Ayr Mount, built by Hillsborough merchant William Kirkland in 1815. The house is deceptive: on the outside, it looks plain, rather small and unassuming. Inside, it is massive, with... More

Ayr Mount is an 1815 Federalist style house built along the Eno River in Hillsborough. The house itself is open only for short periods, but is well worth seeing. It had been lived in until fairly recently, and is beautifully preserved. The grounds are open to the public, with a one mile walk which runs to the river and around... More

Well worth doing the guided tour, about an hour long. No self guided tours. Immaculately restored house with beautiful artefacts. Very knowledgible docent gave a huge amount of well delivered information. Delightful and free one mile 'poets' walk' in the grounds, down to lake and river.

I took an out of town friend to Ayr Mount, partly because I had never been there myself and was curious. The tour guide was wonderful, very knowledgable and gave just the two of us a great tour. I would take other visitors back.

This early American home has been lovingly restored to it's early 1800's glory. A simple brick facade hides the beautifully appointed interior, with wonderful crown molding, and museum quality furnishings. The docent did a wonderful job sharing the story of the Kirkwood's home.

This is Ayr Mount. The owners charge a small fee to see the inside and it is worth every penny. Beautiful! The Poet's Walk is on the outside and that is free and I am not sure if it belongs to Ayr Mount. .

Excellent tour of a remarkable house. The guide, Pat, was gracious, entertaining, and knowledgeable. We were probably inside the house for an hour. I highly recommend this tour to adults and children 6 and older. One of the best guides I have encountered in many years.

I love walking the one mile trail at Ayrmount, called Poet's Walk. It is a beautiful well maintained trail with hills, flat trail, riverside, a historic house, and a pond along the way. It's a lovely spot for a picnic, and hosts weddings and other special events. The house tour is worth taking too. This place is a treasure, just... More
