About
Largest model railroad in western North Carolina housed in the historic train depot in Hendersonville, NC. A 100' X 20' HO scale model railroad based on western North Carolina in the mid 1900s fills most of the depot and a real caboose sits just outside. Artifacts from real railroads are on display throughout the depot with an interactive display screen to help you indentify the items. Cameras on our trains give the bird's eye view of a trip around our layouts. The club's new 60' X 12' outdoor G scale layout is very popular. We are open Wednesdays 1 to 3 and Saturdays 10 to 2. There is a separate Thomas the Tank train layout for young engineers to operate. Special event on Saturday, May 11, from 9 to 3 celebrating National Train Day. A real locomotive and crew will be on site plus many activities for all ages. See our website for details. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

These trains have their own cell phone number so that the engineer can control motion and realistic locomotive engine, bell, and horn sounds. The layout covers many cities with alternate routes. If you ever played with trains or are interested in real life simulations, you will find this intriguing. The club members are happy to explain details including some of the routes that they setup for each other to accomplish. Easily plan for 15 minutes just to wonder at the detail of the multiple layouts; 1/2 or more if you have any questions or want to drive a train.

After a long hiatus, the Apple Valley Railroad Club is back open. It is located in an old train depot and is a free attraction with donations accepted. I give it 3 stars and that's no knock on this nice train exhibit. I give it three because it is about on par with most average model train attractions. The collection is not giant nor overly ornate, but it is well taken care of by many volunteers. There is an indoor portion with some narrow displays that open into a little bit more open room with a few interactive speed controls. There is also an outdoor section with larger model trains, but these are not as interesting as the smaller sets. Another negative that is no fault of Apple Valley is that there is a rather large farmer's market right outside on Saturdays. This makes it hard to see some of the details because of the crowds. I would try to go on a Wednesday if you can. Otherwise, this is a well maintained collection that is worth seeing. It is just a little smaller than most other model train exhibits out there, so is not worth a huge detour.

Wait until you see what we have in store for you in 2020. Special lighting effects are in the works including day to night and many lit structures on the layout.

We came here with our two young kids and had a blast! So many things to touch, including a scavenger hunt for older kids.

This is the type of response I promised our club members we would get if we continued to improve our museum and more importantly our interaction with the public. Thank you for your review.

This should be on your must do stops if you are nearby on a Saturday. We were headed to Chimney Rock and stopped by. The restored train station was nostalgic and beautiful. It had four rooms of train layouts. It was all so we'll down. The volunteers were helpful and enthusiastic. So glad we stopped

This was a terrific experience with a big HO collection/layout. My husband is a Model Railroader and loved the layout. He went with members of the club and told them that they were so lucky to have this Club so close to them. He said he would recommend a visit to anyone who has some time to spare. Well worth the time and will return again from Indy.
