On our day of driving back home to Florida we stopped here because the weather was inclement. The door was locked so you just have to ring the doorbell. We were enthusiastically greeted and welcomed. I felt so valued! This museum is well loved and much attention is brought to detail. There are two main sections: military and Saluda. You found yourself drawn into each piece due to the layout and the descriptions. Unfortunately we only saw the military side as we had to leave to return home. But, we will return to view the Saluda side on our next visit. Please plan to spend a minimum of an hour here.

This museum is a hidden gem in town. Located in the historic courthouse, it has exhibits that highlight the WNC history. The docents are knowledgeable and friendly. We had an enjoyable time touring the exhibits and the train room is a must see! We would highly recommend a visit to the museum.

We went to hendersonville while visiting the mountains. Parked along the road in what looked like a perfectly legal parking spot. Came out to find $50 ticket! They need to pay for new garage! Its a shame, so many small cities going under. They need to keep city simple, clean, fun, safe, easy access.

The Heritage Museum is a free museum that includes a few different small collections. There is a room about local trains, a patchwork of war displays, and the history of the area. Of particular interest to me was the display about the giant touring pig from Hendersonville, relics from summer camps past, and the train exhibit. I can't say that the bulk of this collection sustains anything higher than lukewarm interest, but it's hard to criticize a free museum. Give it a go if you have nothing to do, but don't go out of your way to see this one. The subject matter just isn't that engaging.

We got so much more from this visit than we expected! The building is basically original and very beautiful. We met a retired judge, a Vietnam vet, who owns much of the military collection which spans from the Civil War to Desert Storm. (We took his picture). There is an old picture of a log cabin which is thought to be the oldest home in Henderson County. We met a lady who has lived in that cabin since the day she was born in it. Our tour guide was a life-long resident whose family owned the first inn in the city. He spoke of how he and his friends would jump on the local freight train, ride into town and then jump off once it was in town. Did I mention it's a freebie? Don't miss this one. Who knows whom you'll meet there?

The Henderson County Heritage Museum is located in the beautifully restored courthouse in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The exhibits were devoted to the many wars in which citizens of Henderson County served, from the Revolutionary War to the current war on terrorism. For a small county museum, it was extremely well done, and the volunteer docents were very helpful and extremely helpful. The cost for visiting this museum is free, but there is a place to make contributions.

Well done displays of history of the county. Material and artifacts are quality, and well laid out and described. See the model train layout too.

My husband and I have been to this museum in the Courthouse, which shows a wonderful depiction of life during the Revolutionary War and Civil War and in 1979, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
But there are important monuments around the side of the building that should not be overlooked. They are dedicated to citizens of Henderson County who gave their lives during WWI, WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, Spanish American War, Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq and all other US military involvement where lives were lost.
I didn't realize these were here when my husband and I came to visit the museum the first time. It was nice to make this visit.

My husband and I stopped in the courthouse and stayed about a half hour wandering through their wonderful exhibits of local history. Free admission.
It is the County's 2nd Courthouse, built in 1905 next to the original (built 1840) which was torn down when the 2nd Courthouse was completed. In 1979 the current courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
If you are a history buff, and even if you're not, this is a not to miss exhibit, with docents available with a wealth of information with exhibits on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and more.

We saw the reviews on Trip Advisor so took the tour. This small museum is in the heart of town on the main downtown street of Hendersonville, on the main floor of the courthouse. There are several rooms. The space showcases the local history of early settler days, Indians, railroads, Civil War, the depression, the culture, WWI, WWII, the remaining wars. One room is set up like the area in the early to mid 1900's. Others show the items used in war by local soldiers. Excellent place to peruse the daily life of these events in the life of actual people who lived in Hendersonville, NC. One room is devoted to a massive railroad panorama with a moving miniature train that was quite impressed. If you're into railroads it's worth a trip for that alone. We're from Indiana and had no prior interest in the area and we found it highly interesting and curiously intimate. So many museums focus on the grand sweep of history, and this one showed how railroads, weather, the mountains, the wars and the economy affected this particular area. Very interesting. The guide was a lovely woman who knew the answers to all the questions, yet allowed us to look at our leisure. The security guard at the court house even told us some things. You can get through it in one hour, but allow a bit longer. No admission fee, however, they have a donation box and it seems that one should either donate, or buy something in the gift shop. We found some interesting old time maps and a book to purchase. Parking was easy on the main street of the city, but I suppose if you arrived at a peak hour it might not be. I think this is a great museum for anyone, adults to kids. Kids are likely to find it more interesting than most, due to the intimacy of the displays and the fact that you are just inches from the glass instead of viewing from behind a rope barrier. This may be small, and free, but don't let that make you assume it's not a great museum. It was actually one of the highlights of our trip to NC.

My wife and I will be visiting the museum in June. What is the suggested amount of time to tour the museum and its exhibits? Thank you.

I think a couple of hours will do it. It's a guided tour (free) and it kinda depends on how many questions and how much conversation you do with the guide. The guide can be very engaging. Enjoy. Be sure to visit the Mast General store at the other end of the street.
