- John HLaurel, Mississippi11 contributionsGreat Time at Old CardinalWe had such a good time gem mining at the old cardinal gem mine. Isiah was so helpful in making sure we had everything we needed and then helping identify and separate our gemstones. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and highly recommend them. My wife also enjoyed talking with Darcelle (Isiah's grandmother) about cooking and old times.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- SINE S1 contributionDigging The Old Cardinal Gem Mine, Southwestern NCYou have a very good chance of finding a beautiful Cowee Valley stones or even a jewelry quality gem here if you what to look for. The friendly knowledgable staff provide you with marked bags of all your different treasures. With a bit of patience, luck and perseverance one learns what to look for. The Old Cardinal Gem Mine is a quaint little mountain place where the chickens are clucking and the sounds of mountains gospel music is always wafting through the trees along with the sound of the water flowing down the troughs. It's not the largest shiniest venue in the Franklin area, then again neither are rubies when you first find them. - Tom-Barbara CSt. Augustine, Florida62 contributionsOld Cardinal Gem Mine is the best! This is by far our favorite mine in Franklin NC! Had a great time and got a large variety of stones. Love the screens at this mine because they don’t hurt your fingers, which is a huge plus if you’ve ever done this. We will definitely be visiting Old Cardinal Gem Mine again!Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 4, 2024
- Caroline C2 contributionsThe Diamond of MinesWe have been to Old Cardinal a few times. Each trip was a great experience, and this time was no exception. First off, Old Cardinal has the best prices in the area. We got a native bucket and an enriched bucket for a total of $40. Each bucket was huge! And, Ms. Darcel gave a little extra dirt in each bucket, which was really nice. We found a variety of gems: Rubies, emeralds, quartz, agate, dragon stone, a bunch of jasper, and more—all of nice sizes. She took pictures of our group, and helped us identify and sort our haul. Old Cardinal isn’t a grand palace, but the kindness, service, and consistent good finds more than makes up for it. Highly recommend!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 4, 2024
- Nancy DShawnee, Oklahoma8 contributionsGreat timeMy granddaughter and I had a wonderful time. We found a bunch of beautiful stuff in our bucket. My granddaughter also did a fossil bucket and found a bunch of stuff. She was very excited about all of the teeth. Darcel is the sweetest person and definitely loves what she is doing. We are already planning our trip back. On a sidenote we went to a more commercialized gem mine and found about a third of what we found at Old Cardinal Gem Mine!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 5, 2024
- Ashley SMolena, Georgia33 contributionsOff the beaten path Gem Mine đź’ŽMy family ended up here today and we had so much fun! Ms. Darcel was welcoming and helpful. We purchased one native bucket for $20 and one fossil bucket for $20. Both were filled with all kinds of different treasures. After the kids finished sifting Ms. Darcel came over and explained to them what all kinds of gems and fossils they had found. We will definitely come again next time we are in Franklin. She accepts cash or paypal. Different price ranges on buckets depending on size, $20,50, or $100 I believe. It is off the beaten path, nothing commercialized or fancy but I highly recommend. Thanks again!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 25, 2024
- lisaSt. Petersburg, Florida2 contributionsGreat SpotI took my 8 year old daughter to Old Cardinal. I’m so glad we picked this spot over all the others. My daughter found so many colorful gems and we had a lovely time meeting and chatting it up with the owner, Marcelle. She’s lovely and very knowledgeable. We will be back!!!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 6, 2024

This mine is in dire need of cleaning. You’ll find that nothing has been repaired or cleaned up for years. Instead of gravel they’ve spread layers of cardboard boxes to walk on. They provide dollar store plastic baskets to use for panning. We’ve been to many of the gem mines in the area and this one is deplorable. You get very few gems for your money. The two young teenagers, running the mine live there with their grandmother, are knowledgeable but left me feeling pretty sorry for them. Their “gift shop” is a living room with blankets covering most of the ??? And such a thick layer of dust on everything else. A very unpleasant experience. The pictures on their web site must be quite old. I pray for those young people, hoping for better days ahead.

Run down, sketchy, only take PayPal and Zelle. Alarms go off as you pull into the parking lot and you hear the pricing and payment options. Sounds and feels scammy… Bucket prices are $50 plus. All of the buckets probably were filled and loaded with a few gemstones. Two old port-a-potties for restrooms looked like they had been there for years. We heard the pricing debated it for a few and left.
We were looking to go to Rose Creek mine which we had visited before and was amazing and a fraction of the price. Unfortunately they were closed and we tried here next. I assume many of the good reviews are friends and family or people that haven’t been anywhere else before.

I would have given them a big ZERO if it was a raining option. This place is a scam, I paid $40 for a so called “NC gems’ bucket and only a small citrine was the product of it. They give you a small plastic meshed tray that looks like a toy and some cans to dig into your bucket. They are not helpful, probably because these kids they have working, have no idea of what to look for. Every time I asked what I was getting, the response was “stones”. They only take cash, Zelle or PayPal, no cards. If you have some value to your money, stay away.
We went to Rose creek mine and it was amazing.

My family and I spend time every summer in Franklin, as extended family lives in the area. We visit Rose Creek Mine each year for gem mining. This year, however, Rose Creek was closed for restocking during our trip so we decided to try Old Cardinal. The owners were friendly enough, and the gem mining experience was still fun, but we did not receive very many actual gems for the price. The$40 embellished bucket procured a small handful of gemstones and the other 2/3 of items were rocks. My son was happy to take some of the rocks also, but having experienced Rose Creek, this was a major disappointment. For the same price at Rose Creek, one walks away with 10-15 bags of very special and large size gemstones that are individually bagged and labeled by the owners. If it is the only option available, Old Cardinal will do the trick, but if at all possible, go to Rose Creek.
The roaming roosters and chickens were amusing, except they had to roam through piles of debris and cargo shipping containers.

We recently enjoyed spending a couple of hours at the Old Cardinal Gem Mine. Although we had "panned for gold" a few places in the past this was our first time mining for gems. The Old Cardinal Gem Mine is family owned and operated by one of the nicest families you'll ever meet. Morgan, Isaiah and their grandmother, Darcel were so friendly and helpful throughout the entire experience. Morgan has great knowledge of the gems as well as the processes of turning them into jewelry and keepsakes. We had so much fun going through our first bucket of "seeded" dirt that we purchased a second one. We're taking home some beauties, but more importantly we left with some great memories.

I didn’t buy anything or went gem panning. It was way too hot and I didn’t have any cash. I’m assuming the owner only accepts cash but I didn’t ask because I didn’t do gem panning. The owner, Darcel was really sweet and very welcoming. It’s a rustic gem panning place.

We had a wonderful time at The Old Cardinal Gem Mine. Darcel was so friendly and helpful. She taught my grandson how to distinguish the gems from the mountain rocks. Our visit was so relaxing, and we truly enjoyed the time we were there.

How much is it for 1 child and 3 adults to MINE MY OWN ROCKS!! Thanks in advance!
Written October 6, 2019
It all depends on the type and size of the buckets. I think, if I recall, they had buckets from $15 to $50. My wife and I got two of the $50 buckets. The people who ran it were so nice and helpful, plus they separated and identified them for us at no additional cost.
