I have been going to Cowee Ruby Gem mine since I was a little girl. My mom wanted to go years ago and this was a must to stop on my moms list. My mom has had lots of gems cut and set from Cowee. After I got married I got my husband hooked on gem mining and we go there on our trips. And I have even bought boxes of gem dirt ordered for my mom as her later years she couldn’t travel. I lost my mom April 28,2020 and I inherited all her beautiful rocks that I will be putting in a lighted curio cabinet as a loving tribute to my moms love of gem stones. I love the gems we get from Cowee, my husband has had several stones cut and set for me. These stones have more value than anything because we found these stones together. This a definite must stop and great value and stones that you get.

We LOVED our time at Cowee Mountain Ruby Mine! My family took a girls trip to Franklin, this was our first activity, we had a great time sifting and gathering crystals - the environment was welcoming, the scenery was beautiful, the shop was charming and packed with magical trinkets, the staff was knowledgable and kind.

Definitely go check these guys out! I am a local and bring visiting friends here all the time, and have had several gemstones cut here. They educate you about how to identify raw stones when you sift through your buckets, which is super helpful for when you go rockhounding out on your own! The store is great and they have a beautiful jewelry and pre-cut stone selection!

Very relaxing and a very nice owner and young man to talk with that tended the area. I found a lot of gems for the cost.

The prices were good and we loved how much we found. We picked this location because it's open later in the day. We were a little disappointed that the woman who helped us seemed disinterested and bothered by us asking questions. Hopefully we just caught her on an off day. The staff at Sheffield's Mine were much more enthusiastic about helping us.

I grew up in a family that collects gem so my expectations are very high when it comes to gem mining. I researched the mines near Maggie Valley but most of them don’t give you the local dirt to mine for native gems from the area. The one I went to closer to Maggie Valley didn’t have any of the local gems to mine.
But Cowee Mountain Ruby Mine was the real deal!! I have a 6 and 8 year old. We bought 2 super buckets for the family. We had a blast! And found so many precious gems! They also can cut and mount the gems for you. I was so impressed with the staffs’ knowledge and they helped you decipher between rock and gem! This place is definitely worth the time and money spent! I would suggest this place over the other mines in the surrounding areas!

Drove 45 minutes with my 3 kids and they were closed, even though the website and sign said they were open. We saw a lady in the office, and asked her if they were open she rudely yelled, "were closed!" I said, your sign and website says you're open. And then she replied, "well were not!" Nice customer service. Hope everyone has a better experience than we did.

My wife is a rock hound and loves collecting all types of rocks, minerals and gems. It made some sense to me that for our 20th anniversary, I would load her up in the truck, hook up the travel trailer and head south from our Michigan home and do some exploring in the hills and mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. We had been seeing more rain than we cared to see and we needed a little time in some milder temperatures. Things in Michigan were starting to get snowy. So here we are, pulled in to the Cowee Mountain Mine and checked out their awesome gift shop. The gift shop has some very beautiful specimens of all types of gems and rocks. You aren’t really at the mine here but you buy the dirt by the bucket or, you can buy it by the barrel.
Depending on what bucket you buy, it might be salted or it might not be. Either way, there is a bucket size for every budget. You then sit next to the water trough and sift through your dirt. What a great time. I actually found a very nice chunk of blue topaz that I’m having cut and shipped back to me. We spent 4 hours here on one day and 3 hours the next day when we came back for more fun.
We had a great time and staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I made sure I tipped John, who talked and entertained and informed us while we sifted the dirt!
Weather plays a big part here. Hands get cold fast in the water. This was one of the only places still open in November but what fun!

Highly Recommend for entire family. Our campground was a block away.

My main goal to visit Franklin was to go to a different mine that I visited years ago and enjoyed the owners. They were not open on Saturday so I tried this mine. My partner and I got a good amount of nice gemstones with a salted bucket. One thing they did here that I thought was a great idea was adding one genuine cut and polished stone to every salted bucket. I got a nice garnet. Owners who looked at what we had seemed bored and looked like they just wanted to go home, so we just left without having anything cut.
