Had an absolutely awesome guided fly fishing trip with Gordon. At booking and prior to the trip Gordon and I discussed fishing options and conditions. One thing I've always wanted to get more familiar with was euro nymphing. I let Gordon know this and he was very enthusiastic about teaching me this technique. As we got started he showed me all the techniques, equipment, flies, leaders, etc... that we'd be using and over the course of the morning provided he was super patient as I learned the techniques. I had some previous experience with fly fishing but this was my very first time every trying euro nymphing. Over the course of the morning we caught over 60 fish and could not have had a better time. If you are looking for a person to fish with I could not recommend Turning Stones Fly Fishing enough. I have done several guided trips across North America and Gordon is without question one of the best guides I've every fishing with!

I booked 3 days with Gordon and unfortunately, due to rainy weather, we were only able to get 4 hours on the water. My objective for the trip was to learn all I could about Euro nymphing and to be able to take what I absorbed and apply it on both my home waters in Missouri and elsewhere.

Gordon was very patient in instructing me, educating me, and reinforcing the lessons throughout our time on the water. He used both demonstration and verbal coaching in helping me learn more about the technique. Gordon was very encouraging and not only helped build my knowledge base about Euro nymphing but also added to my ability to read the water and identify likely fish-holding spots.

In addition to learning, we did land quite a few fish - wild and holdover rainbows, a brown or two, and plenty of brook trout. This allowed me to have a terrific hands-on experience and apply what I was learning in real time.

I have fished with more than a dozen guides throughout the U.S. and Europe. None were more invested in teaching me than Gordon. The few short hours we were able to spend together convinced me to schedule another trip with him later this year. I'm eager to learn all I can about Euro nymphing and can easily see why Gordon has been instructing competitive fly fishers. He's simply an outstanding teacher and his passion for doing so is obvious.

Thank you, Gordon, for the lessons. You've inspired me to buy my own Euro nymphing rod.

Gordon has the gift of a teacher. Not only is he a great fisherman but he has the rare ability to recognize faults/problems with techniques and teach ways to correct them. I learned a lot with him regarding taking my game to the next level and will be definitely going back. Super nice guy and passionate about teaching. It's not just about catching fish during an outing with him he teaches you to catch more fish on your own outings.

My wife and I were excited to reserve Gordon for a 4 hour wading guided fly fishing tour. Unfortunately, we were sourced another guide who was nice enough, but was unable to put us on fish.

Staying in Highlands, Gordon was transparent that we might be required to drive ~45 min to the fishing location, which we agreed too. I was not contacted by our new guide until 5pm the day before the trip. We spoke briefly, and he mentioned we should commute to Cherokee to fish. We agreed to the hour and a half drive.

Our guide was convinced an early start was not necessary. After arriving at the fishing spot, we noticed there were fishermen already there, and walked about a mile and a half from the vehicle down stream to a different location.
After getting in the water, and after a couple nibbles, my wife finally landed a couple (2) trout within the first hour and a half.

Moments later, we were abruptly disrupted by a river attendant throwing net after net full of trout over a 3 story bank into the rock bed below. Half the fish hit the water hard, the other half hit the rocks....Clearly stocking the river and cruelly traumatizing and killing fish, our guide went on to comment that this specific fishing spot he would not eat the fish out of, as the trout are farm raised. This was a major turn off for my wife and I, needless to say.

We did not catch a fish the rest of the trip. 2 fish across 4 hours is unacceptable. Our guide was a great guy, and certainly helped us with some technique and tying the flys, but I will never return to this specific spot to fish, let alone pay any guide to bring me there.

I called Gordon and explained the situation. He was unfazed and did not offer any remedy.

Four of us - all experienced fly fishermen, fished with Gordon Vanderpool and his partner Forrest on two beautiful days this week for ''Bows and Browns in Northern Georgia. I have fly fished for a lifetime but still learned much from Gordon in those two days. I have fished Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon for decades but fighting large trout on very light tippet in small water with snags and ledge requires some special techniques and he was great in his ability to add some very practical tips to help all of us. Euro-nymphing on light very sensitive rods was also a new experience and deadly as well as enjoyable. In intelligence, humor, patience, skill and commitment to his art, I would rate Gordon at the very top of his profession and that is coming from someone who has spent a lot of guided time on a lot of rivers. Fair to say that my thoughts were shared by my three friends.

Spent a couple of days in the NC mountains fishing with Gordon and had an amazing time. He knows where to fish, how to fish and most importantly how to share and teach. I came away with better skills and had a lot of fun learning. These mountains are special and the mountain streams hold some magnificent trout; they aren’t all large but they are all works of art. The nativized rainbows are among the prettiest fish I’ve ever seen.
Spend even a half day with Gordon and your will come away with great memories and will be a better fly fisherman.

Outstanding day on the river with Turning Stones guide Forrest. I had expressed interest in learning the Euro nymphing technique, and Forrest provided an excellent introduction. Despite my overly aggressive SMB hooksets, I was able to land 75+ fish, (that's an conservative estimate) with 3 to 4 outstanding bows, with much needed instruction! Epic day of not only fun landing fish, but great instruction. I now feel confident I can take my Euro game to my home waters... and practice for the return trip. Highly recommended guide service. Give Gordon a call and plan your trip.

After a terrific April trip with Gordon on the Tuck, I asked Gordon to guide my adult daughter and boyfriend for a day during our family vacation in Cashiers.
Neither had fly fished before.
Although a tough day for fishing, they both caught a number of nice rainbows and browns.
They really enjoyedGordon and both consider it a highlight of our week in North Carolina.

Great fishing experience with Forrest! I had a last-minute opportunity to fish and Gordon of Turning Stones set me up for a half day of fishing with Forrest as my guide. Forrest taught me the Euro nymphing technique; and he provided me with everything I needed including waders for the trip. We were able to go to 3 of his favorite spots, and I landed a dozen nice-sized rainbows. Highly recommended.

My wife and I had an opportunity to fish with Gordon and had an amazing day! Not only did we catch fish all day, we gained so much knowledge. Gordon is an amazing instructor and guide; we truly think he is part trout, because he knows the water and knows what the fish are looking for. We highly recommend him and his company - you will not be disappointed!
