The entire Bartram trail is actually the recreation of 115 miles (185 km) trail created by the 18th-century naturalist William Bartram’s journey from North Georgia mountains into North Carolina. The section near Franklin is beautiful and pleasant to walk, easy enough for nearly everybody to walk.
There are 79 miles of Bartram trail in North Carolina. Nowadays Bartam Trail tentacles extend to Alabama and Florida so in a sense it could compete for hikers' attention with the Appalachian Trail.

This was our first hike while visiting Franklin over Memorial Day weekend and it was a pretty good workout. We did the hike from Wallace Branch to William's pulpit. It gets pretty steep right before you get to William's pulpit. There is a small sign on your right when you get to the overlook and we actually missed it because we were watching our dog and not paying attention. IF you go by it, the climb gets a lot steeper. We doubled back eventually and enjoyed the amazing view from the ridge. Worth the short hike and the exercise.

The Bartram Trail via Wallace Gap is a nice hike for families and most novice hikers. You'll see some small waterfalls along the creek, cross a couple small bridges, and make your way up to William's Pulpit for a scenic view to the west of the Nantahala National Forest. A great place for a picinic, or just catching a sunset, this section of the Bartram Trail is something for all tastes and skill levels of hiking ability. A great location for photography as well.

Depending on where you catch the trail it can be quite challenging. If you are just looking for a 2-4 mile hike each way you can park along the road to wayah Bald and hike as much as you like. We saw several long term and 1 or 2 short term hikers on the trail. It is worth it for the views. There are two balds nearby that you can hike to. and several groups camped out. Great place to be outdoors. Cooler here than in the nearby towns.

Wallace branch review

The easy parts were easy. And the hard parts were hard! It was not all uphill. That last little bit was straight uphill! But it was all worth it. The view from Williams Pulpit was beautiful. My tracker said it was 4.8 miles out and back. On my way back, there was a deer on the trail, not very far from us! The waterfall is pretty. There’s a few places for the pups to get in the water and cool off. And it’s only a couple of miles from downtown!

Trail is moderately difficult in places, but very well worth the experience. We encountered several hiking families with children so trail is easy enough for everyone. We hiked for about 70 minutes to reach the overlook. Steepest part of the trail in near the overlook. We sat, ate a sandwich, and enjoyed the view. Saw a couple of waterfalls along the way. First one is early into the hike. Be sure to take water with you. Trail is narrow in places and we had to step over a couple of recently downed trees. We heard a nest of bees at one point and learned later that a young person got stung by one of them. Fortunately the parents carried Benadryl . Hike up is a good workout and we really enjoyed the trail.

This is a hidden trail that probably many people miss. You might want to just go part way and then turn around, but don't do that! You need to make your way all to the steep hill. Once you struggle up the steep hill, you will be rewarded with a wonderful and amazing view of the mountains of Franklin! It's worth it to go when you can just sit up there for a while and reflect on life. I highly recommend it for those who appreciate and respect the nature and natural beauty of God's brilliant creations.

This hike is close to downtown Franklin. It's 2 miles up to William's Pulpit. The hike was moderately tough in places. But very doable. The views were amazing.

We have been to many intersects with the Bartram Trail along wth eastern seaboard. It is always fascinating to wonder what the landscape looked liked hundreds of years ago.
