    Find Native Rubies
I went to Mason's Ruby and Sapphire Mine at the end of September 2023. The staff were great and very helpful in helping me identify different stones and answering any questions I had. I came away with about 110 carats worth of rubies over the course of the two days. If you have the time and patience, take your tailings home. I found about 80% of the rubies after I had ended the trip at home. You can take your time and clean the stones better which will make it easier to find them by the naked eye or with a blacklight. If this is a route you go, bring sand bags or some kind of large container with you to save your tailings. For estimates, if you just haul dirt and sluce, a single person can probably do about a sandbag full per day. If you can, bring a blacklight flashlight (strong one) with you which will also help while you are there. I recommend coming early in the day and staying as long as you can, the more dirt you haul the more changes you have in finding a stone. There are bathroom facilities on site and as their website says, bring food and snacks with you because you're in the middle of no where. I got caught up in the mining that I personally didn't stop to eat. Definitely bring a print out of the directions as there is little to no cell service out at the mine. I had a great experience and would definitely go again.

Best of four mines we visited!
By far the best mine we visited on this trip (visited 4 total). Grab all the buckets you can by 3 pm and wash them by 5 pm. Don't get them done? Bring the stone home with you (bring your own buckets for this). You'll find even more rubies at home! We went twice, as this was our favorite mine of the trip. First time we got through about eight buckets each. Second time we got there earlier and did over ten each. If you like dirt, this is the place for you! The road to get there is a bit off the beaten path. They had campsites, but we already had housing. Wouldn't mind going back, camping out, and spending all day at this mine, for several days.

Digging in the dirt and finding me some gems. :) 😁
Had such a blast went with my hubby in July 2023. He said I wore his butt out and he'd never go back Planning on going back again with my husband his idea lol for my 50th wedding anniversary this year? I found an awesome Ruby and had it made into a ring this year. I'm hoping to find a large sapphire, so I can have another large ring created. Went in 2022 also with my best friend Judy, we were there for a week. Worked our butts off. I lost 10 pounds. What fun, fabulous, can't say enough about it? I share with all of my friends, and people who are interested in gemming and rock hounding 😁 FUN FUN FUN 😁

Went here after spending a day at a similar mine nearby only because Mason's was one of the few places open on Sunday. Mason's was OK but was completely outclassed by the customer service and friendliness of the staff at Ruby Creek. Mason's was also much more expensive for our family of 3.

We have been to Franklin many times and are very spoiled by the staff at Rose Creek. We only do native mining and Mason’s has a great set up for digging, and flumes for removing the dirt. Yes it is $70 dollars for two people, but, that is unlimited buckets 🪣. We usually have a bag full of gems from our day, we know what to look for and just didn’t find any goodies. We started by 10 am and we stayed until 2:30. They do offer salted dig area for the kids. The day we were there only two sapphires were found, one was a bell ringer 19.6 carats. It’s an exciting day of digging for treasure.

We've "gemmed" at a couple of the mines in the Franklin area and the staff here is probably the most helpful.

You fill your own bucket (unless you buy a salted bucket) so choose wisely. I was filling buckets for my wife and obviously didn't do a very good job as she only found one gem. We decided that the family next to us must have been geologists as they obviously chose a much better area to dig because they quickly found multiple gems in their first unsalted bucket.

Still ... it was a fun diversion for a couple of hours and a pretty drive to get there. We'll go back.

This place was great! The two guys running the place told us exactly how to mine and what to look for, answered questions, offered advice, etc. Then we spent the entire day digging our own pay dirt and sluicing. We found mica, pyrite, quartz, garnets, and two sapphires! So much fun! Come prepared to get dirty. We wore old shoes, shirts and shorts, and ended up throwing the shoes away because there's no way to clean them after the red clay and dirt. We only did native mining and it was worth every penny! Others near us bought the pre-loaded buckets and found some amazing pieces. Down the sluice from us was a group of three super-fun ladies doing the native mining, and aside from awesome finds like quartz, pyrite, agate, and others, they found a BUNCH of sapphires.

What a lovely experience. John was so kind and helpful and helped us have a wonderful time! The kids shared an enhanced bucket, which kept them busy for almost an hour. We didn't allow enough time to do our own dig, but John let us enjoy a sampling of that experience, and we had a little bit of success. Lovely outdoor setting. Highly recommend!

This was a lot of fun! I had never " mined" for rubies or anything before. You get empty buckets and fill them with dirt ( and hopefully rubies) from area in the back. Then you use a screen with water and look for rubies. I actually found a few small ones. The employees will show you what you need to be looking for. At the end of your time slot you can take home whatever you find!

About three years ago, I travelled with my family to Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. It was a very pleasant experience then. The mine is currently under new management.

The cashier/manager directed us to a new sluice area so we could get started on mining for sapphires. I placed bottled water in our screens to reserve our three places. After digging for raw material, I went back to the sluice box and discovered our stuff was moved by staff. This is where the lying begins...

I asked the staff person why he moved our stuff and he said the other customer was there first. I said the other person was not there first and that his backpack was on the other end. This is a true statement. The staff member then got the cashier/manager to talk to me. This person said that the other guy was there first, that he was mining there in that spot for over an hour and that if I didn't like it, I could leave.

We just got there so they had our $90 plus dollars. I stated that it is their facility and they called the shots but that I don't plan to come back. I also stated that there was no running water in the sluice box when we were directed to the sluice area. The cashier/manager then went silent since he knew I caught him in a lie. After all, how does one clean rocks for over an hour in the same spot if no water is being pumped into the sluice box? Water pumping was switched on AFTER we left the sluice box to gather raw material.

As for sapphires, compared to our previous experience at the mine, the pickings were extremely slime and the entry fees had increased considerably. Considering the soft economy, the increased competition for your mining business and the level of customer service, the value proposition is not there for Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. You're better off checking out the competition, which we did, and you likely to leave with a higher level of satisfaction and more precious stones.

As for the cashier/manager, all I can say is that if you want to lie to another man in front of his family, don't get caught flat-footed in the deceit. Telling the truth is an old fashioned value which some of us still cherish and are willing to defend. And yes, I don't plan to got back to Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. There are other places more deserving in Franklin, North Carolina.
