Dang! I've never been to this mine, but I am loving what is being said by the mining company to the low star reviews!! Zingers all around! Only, the grammar could be better... Ill volunteer to say what the owner cant. To all the people crying about "not finding anything", its a freaking mine y'all. It's not Emerald Village or any other commercial clone meant for grandkids and middle aged moms. "Oh no my clothes got muddy mining", "my 5 year old got mad because he didn't find a gem" "I paid 30$ and found nothing" boo-hoo!!! This isn't a place to take kids and expect for them to find a handful of gems. Its not the employees jobs to sit you down and tell you what to do, what to look for or tell you what you found. Its nice sure, but shouldn't be expected. If you want someone to hold your hand and show you how to do everything, go to "Gold Rush Great Gem Adventure" and buy salted buckets for your impatient 4 year old. It just really drives me crazy when people give a mining company bad reviews because they had bad luck or tried for an hour and gave up. 30$ is pretty much the general admission for most public mines.
To the owner of this fine establishment, stay salty and maybe one day I might even come and try your mine out.
PEACE

After visiting a different mine that I had a terrible experience with, I tried one last time and ended up here and was SO glad I did! From the moment I walked on property, it was beautiful. There were hummingbirds and butterflies and dragonflies everywhere and the people at the desk and sitting out front were so helpful and friendly. I had no experience in mining or gems, just a real interest in learning, and the folks here are happy to help and teach. You get two buckets and go over a small bridge to the dig sites and can dig anywhere, as deep as you want anywhere in the marked areas. I was there for two hours and found three small sapphires totally 1.6 carats...nothing fancy, but I found them with my own eyes after being shown exactly what to look for, which made it totally worth the experience. I got there later in the day, but if you go early, you can haul buckets down for hours. The buckets are small and easy to carry and the walking distance is not far from where you go through them. There were two associates walking around the whole time assisting people in how to wash and go through the rocks thoroughly and everyone I saw there found something of interest to take home, even if was something small. The experience was perfect, I would definitely go back and dig deeper! You can also camp here or bring food for a picnic, which I would love to do as well. The property is really small and pretty and the customer service was the best I have received at any mine yet. It was not about what I found, it was how helpful they were in teaching me what I was even looking for and the experience of being neck deep in a hole finding my very own gems for the first time! Yay!

We've "gemmed" at a couple of the mines in the Franklin area and the staff here is probably the most helpful.

You fill your own bucket (unless you buy a salted bucket) so choose wisely. I was filling buckets for my wife and obviously didn't do a very good job as she only found one gem. We decided that the family next to us must have been geologists as they obviously chose a much better area to dig because they quickly found multiple gems in their first unsalted bucket.

Still ... it was a fun diversion for a couple of hours and a pretty drive to get there. We'll go back.

Went here after spending a day at a similar mine nearby only because Mason's was one of the few places open on Sunday. Mason's was OK but was completely outclassed by the customer service and friendliness of the staff at Ruby Creek. Mason's was also much more expensive for our family of 3.

What a lovely experience. John was so kind and helpful and helped us have a wonderful time! The kids shared an enhanced bucket, which kept them busy for almost an hour. We didn't allow enough time to do our own dig, but John let us enjoy a sampling of that experience, and we had a little bit of success. Lovely outdoor setting. Highly recommend!

This was a lot of fun! I had never " mined" for rubies or anything before. You get empty buckets and fill them with dirt ( and hopefully rubies) from area in the back. Then you use a screen with water and look for rubies. I actually found a few small ones. The employees will show you what you need to be looking for. At the end of your time slot you can take home whatever you find!

Family
About three years ago, I travelled with my family to Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. It was a very pleasant experience then. The mine is currently under new management.

The cashier/manager directed us to a new sluice area so we could get started on mining for sapphires. I placed bottled water in our screens to reserve our three places. After digging for raw material, I went back to the sluice box and discovered our stuff was moved by staff. This is where the lying begins...

I asked the staff person why he moved our stuff and he said the other customer was there first. I said the other person was not there first and that his backpack was on the other end. This is a true statement. The staff member then got the cashier/manager to talk to me. This person said that the other guy was there first, that he was mining there in that spot for over an hour and that if I didn't like it, I could leave.

We just got there so they had our $90 plus dollars. I stated that it is their facility and they called the shots but that I don't plan to come back. I also stated that there was no running water in the sluice box when we were directed to the sluice area. The cashier/manager then went silent since he knew I caught him in a lie. After all, how does one clean rocks for over an hour in the same spot if no water is being pumped into the sluice box? Water pumping was switched on AFTER we left the sluice box to gather raw material.

As for sapphires, compared to our previous experience at the mine, the pickings were extremely slime and the entry fees had increased considerably. Considering the soft economy, the increased competition for your mining business and the level of customer service, the value proposition is not there for Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. You're better off checking out the competition, which we did, and you likely to leave with a higher level of satisfaction and more precious stones.

As for the cashier/manager, all I can say is that if you want to lie to another man in front of his family, don't get caught flat-footed in the deceit. Telling the truth is an old fashioned value which some of us still cherish and are willing to defend. And yes, I don't plan to got back to Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine. There are other places more deserving in Franklin, North Carolina.

This was not our first trip to digging in the dirt to fine gems, but it will be our last at Mason Mines. We went though several buckets and found very little teeny tiny stones that you needed a magnifying glass to see them, much less even think about having them cut.
It was not only our experience in finding nothing, but several people there too. As we were leaving the parking lot, several of us talking making the statement “what a wasted day and that we would not be visiting here again.”
We have never been to an unsalted mine where you dig your own dirt and find tiny stones not in the rough, as we did here. When at other mines you are not told to throw all of the big rocks out and just look for the tiny ones. We have always looked at all rocks to determine if they are rocks or gems in the rough. We were told by the young men working there that all rocks ½” and bigger are just rocks and gavel. Gavel out of a mine, just dug out of the side of the mountain?
In addition, this site is call “Mason’s Ruby and Sapphire Mine,” but we all were told not to even look for rubies because there isn’t any. Okay that leads to false advertising to me.

We traveled to Franklin, NC after seeing it on the Travel Channel as a place to mine rubies and sapphires. We stopped at Ruby City Gems (WOW! what a selection) and asked about the local mines and picked up a map. We were interested in mining at an "unsalted" mine (which means they don't add other gems in - which MOST do) and were told there were only 3 in the area. We were told that we would enjoy Mason's Mine and they were right on!

The drive from downtown Franklin took about 20 minutes because the roads were very curvy and rural. They posted small signs along the way so you knew you were still on the right track. They have a one-time fee for entrance and then you can stay as long as you want (we were there for 2 hours, but others spent the entire day). We grabbed a couple of buckets and headed off to dig up our loot! After about 2 hours we had found about 20 carats total weight in sapphires, but only a small nugget of ruby. 2 of our stones were big enough to cut, but only for a necklace. We still had a great time and the staff was very helpful. They'll look over your tray before you dump it to make sure you haven't missed anything, and they're very helpful pointing out what to look for (we were new at this).

We would highly recommend this mine, and will return if we're ever in the area!
