My wife and I have been to several comedy shows at the Carolina Theatre and have sat in the upper balcony and down in the orchestra so we have had both experiences. Should you have the opportunity, sit in the orchestra.. The balconies have a feel as if you have a birds eye view and has a very steep sight... More

I go to Carolina Theater frequently. Usually for films, occasionally for live performances. It holds a very important place in Durham's history. Let's talk films first. The cinema has 2 theaters, one medium size by today's standards, the other small. New seating makes for very comfortable viewing. The real treasure is that they show limited release, early release and retro... More

I've been a fan as long as I can remember. Great place to see a film or a film festival... Retro films and the NC Gay and Lesbian Film Festival... First run art films, too. And great theatre for great bands. I've so enjoyed seeing folks like the Mavericks, Jamie Cullum, Rosanne Cash, and Durham's very own, Delta Rae.

I understand there is some history here, and nice architecture for Durham, but the sound system was not good, the seats uncomfortable, and the place was, well, just dirty. Walking out after a performance at night was scary because there were homeless panhandlers roaming around asking for money. And with all the shootings that Durham has had, it is not... More

We recently attended a concert at the Durham Theater -- one of a few times we've seen a show here. Built in the 1920s the facility is really lovely and there is not a bad seat in the house. We sat in the upper balcony and could still see and hear everything. There was even a couple dancing in an... More

We were lucky enough to take a self guided tour of this magnificent building, built 1926! It has been been renovated and there is a small exhibit of Durham segregation history on the 3rd floor. On the first floor is a history of the building. There is one elevator. We went to the performance of Chris Botti and the show... More

I visited the Carolina Theater this past weekend for the first time. I was impressed how large this place was. There is a cinema on one side and a concert venue on another. The staff seemed to be very helpful in getting you to your correct seat. I sat in the first tier balcony and was pleasantly surprised how well... More

This is a nice venue located downtown in Durham,so it's close to restaurants and located next door to the Marriott Hotel. It has a lower and upper level, a small theater but great for attending a small show/concert (i.e. jazz concert).

Older theater that has concessions area that caters mostly to moviegoers. We were there for the Esperanza Spalding concert. Our seats were in the mezzanine section. Where our seats were felt just right we felt like we were close enough to the stage to see the performance without squinting. My only advice for tall people is to choose your seats... More

Carolina Theater is well known for its history and great live performances. But many people might not realize they also have 2 small movie theaters which show mostly small release and documentary movies. The kind of gems that you won't find at the mall movies! New very comfy seats were recently installed. In addition to soda drinks they have we... More
