About
Stony Knoll Vineyards is steeped in history, with roots running deep, much like the vines that now line our fields. This North Carolina Century Farm began back in 1896 when the ancestors of Kathy Coe bought a tract of land in Southern Surry County. The farm was a means of survival, in a time when nothing came easy. In the early 1940’s the vineyard area was cleared with hand tools and domesticated animals and put into cultivation. During this time, tobacco was the claimed cash crop. This caused an immense effort to care for the land and give back to it, much as it was giving to the family. Tobacco remained dominant until the early 1980’s. The farm remained in production, but switching from tobacco to cattle and hay. Then in the late 1990’s, Van Coe had a dream of putting the farm into a new cultivation, with the driving force being future preservation into a family vineyard & winery. In April of 2001, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Niagara, Syrah were born.

Muffin Tins
Sep 2021
I will start with the good things, beautiful scenery and that's pretty much it. I was very disappointed with the trip here. The setting inside is very nice but the older woman doing the tasting was not warm and friendly. She hardly spoke to us at all. The tasting was served in a muffin tin pan with six glasses which was a bit distasteful since the muffin tins were clearly muffin tins. I do understand the COVID issues and how wineries are dealing with them but we were given our flight (muffin tins) and told to "read the paper" to understand our wines. There was a gentleman who came in towards the end, I believe he was the son-in-law. He was very friendly and you can tell he was trying to provide good customer service. All in all...very disappointing and would not go back. So many great wineries in this area don't waste your time with this one.

Beautiful place! Enjoyed the flight tasting! Really like the red table wine, even the bottle at home was great! You know how sometimes you taste wine and you think you like it, but when you open a bottle at home, not so much?! Well this one was great!

Wonderful time!
Sep 2020 • Couples
My husband and I took my sister for her birthday and had the best time! The owners were wonderful to talk to and we loved the wine. It was raining but there was plenty of room in their large, indoor tasting room. It was a beautiful atmosphere - we got to sit at a nice table and not just hang around a bar. They’re wearing masks and serving flights to minimize contact but still let you taste, and we enjoyed all the wine. Will definitely be back!

Great Moderately Priced Wines
Jul 2020
To get a respite from Covid Fever, The Mrs. and I took I ride to Dobson, NC from Charlotte, NC. We were not disappointed. Taste of six different wines cost $7 and bottles of wine are moderately priced compared to other vineyard in the area. Vineyard is family and owned and they are very pleasant. Beautiful locale even though it rained for a few moments. Purchased six bottles of wine for less than $75!
Life is good!

Great Wine - Great People
Feb 2020
Not only is the winery located on the sight of a very large former dairy farm, they have a very charming 1800’s cabin on site. The owner/winemaker led out tasting, and was very happy to discuss his views on each gape variety used, how he came to make each wine, etc. I will definitely return. And do NOT miss tasting the dessert wines!

Peaceful Getaway
Nov 2019 • Couples
We stayed at the renovated 1850’s cabin across from the vineyard. Very peaceful and cozy spot for a getaway! We loved the historical connection of the cabin to the vineyard. Delicious wines to taste! Very friendly and helpful staff. The cabin was very clean and comfortable.

Wonderful staff, great wines, they make an awesome Sangria! This is one of our favorite wineries in the area. Always friendly, they remember us from their booth in Pilot Mountain.

Beautiful Setting to Enjoy Wine with Friends/Family
Sep 2019 • Friends
Laura & Mark from Charlotte:

Only a 60 minute drive up I-77 from our neighborhood off of West W.T. Harris Blvd. Our fantastic neighbor Nicole made arrangements for our party of 22 neighbors. We were greeted with table-clothed and decorated tables and refreshing ice waters so we could relax while wine tasting. Sure beats a typically crowded winery bar. The congenial and enthusiastic/passionate owner was quite knowledgeable of the many wine varieties and subtle flavors. Happily departed with several bottles. You folks have to start packaging and selling your outrageously delicious tropical sangria. Would love to have a Solo cupful or two while watching the Carolina Panthers. Many local wineries within 15 minutes. Thanks for a delicious experience! Much success on future harvests and vintages! Can you mail me a gallon jug of that sangria?!

Pleasant surprise
Jul 2019 • Couples
My husband and I were driving thru on our way home from Tennessee and decided to stop and give it a try. It is off the beaten path a little, but it is worth it. We were very pleasantly surprised with the winery. The grounds were beautiful and the wines were all good! The winemaker actually did our tasting that afternoon which added to the experience. I liked all of the wines and left with 3 bottles to take home. I would definately recommend giving this winery a try. They even have a house on the vineyard that you can rent. This is the only NC winery I have been to and I would definately go back!
