We did two lessons packages for a big group. 2 boys who were 7 had the semi private lesson and the rest of us had the group lesson (4 girls between 9-12 and 1 adult). The checkin process, putting on the wetsuits and then getting to the beach was seamless and easy. The staff at the store were very friendly. All the kids in our party had never surfed before and the instructors were excellent. I can’t say enough about how great they were. Everyone in our large party said that this surfing lesson was the highlight of their outer banks trip. I highly recommend Corolla surf!!

We've had three lessons with Corolla Surf Shop over the years. All three lessons, the first-timer was standing by the end and greatly enjoyed the experience. Get a lesson early and rent a board for the rest of your trip.
Every time we stop off in the shop, they help us to get what we need. We've never made a bad purchase there, thanks to their help.

My twin 8 year kids had private lessons and they did great! I had very few expectations because it was their first time ever surfing. I was beyond surprised when they both were able to stand and ride a wave the while way in by the end. My son loved it so much he used his trip monies to buy a board.

After vacationing for twenty plus years in the OBX, with the last three in Corolla, we will never patronize this store in any way again. The customer service was horrible and we dealt directly with the owner. Although how he handled things was "legal" per his rental contract, his actions were far from honest / honorable. We were former repeat rental customers (and would have been for many more years to come had the owner handled himself and this matter differently).
This year, we again rented a soft surfboard for two weeks. In the course of normal use (my son was paddling it out into the waves) the board snapped. We took it back to the store to see about a replacement. The manager on duty was very polite, indicated she lacked the authority to make a decision about the board, and mentioned the board we rented was very old.
We agreed to go back later in the day to speak with one of two possible managers who had the authority to speak with us about the board. Upon returning, I was directed to the owner who told me he had already decided what he was going to do and had charged my card for in excess of $320 dollars (in addition to the $120 plus we paid to rent the board). This charge was made before the owner even heard what had happened or had spoken with either me or my son. He was rude and inconsiderate of the facts and of us. He tried to make an analogy about us having an accident in a rental car. His analogy doesn't pass the common sense test - the board was not in an "accident" - it failed during very normal use. A better analogy, from my perspective, is multi-year repeat customers paid full price to rent a very old car that broke down going up a hill, and then were charged by the rental company to buy them a new (or nearly new) car. Had the board been abused, neglected, lost, or in an accident, I would understand his position and his argument. Not the case. Beware.

My two daughters (13 and 16) had a great time on their first surf lesson. They rescheduled from earlier in the week when the waves were too rough and this was a great decision. The instructors (Joe and Andy) were great and my kids managed several runs standing up on the boards. We will be back.

My daughter wanted to take a surf lesson when we were on vacation. It was a group lesson that lasted about 2 hours. She really enjoyed it. This was only her second time on a surfboard so she is no expert, but it was enjoyable.

On our most recent trip to OBX, we scheduled surf lessons for our 3 girls. Dave was fantastic, especially with the youngest, 8. He successfully managed to maintain safety first and yet allowed them all to have equal time catching the waves. For the older two, he even made sure that they enjoyed numerous party waves. Thanks Dave.

Thanks so much for your review! We think Dave is great too! We are glad to hear that you are happy with the lesson and that Dave made sure to put safety first and still make it lots of fun for the kids. Thanks for taking the time to write the review. We hope to see you next year!

My 7 yr old took her first lesson today with Gary. I am so pleased with how it turned out I had to share with my Trip Advisor community! Not only did she ride her first wave (standing up) but she also got a great education on rip currents, falling correctly and surf & beach safety. I even picked up a few pieces of information that I didn't know about as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson because it was hands on for both her and myself. Gary was out in the water on the tandem board with her and I followed them down the beach as safety back up. I learned how and what I am supposed to be doing while she is out surfing...and parents with youngsters...that doesn't mean sitting in your beach chair!
Gary built up her confidence gradually and taught her everything she needed to know in order to ride her first wave. She was taught Surfing 101 correctly from how to enter the water, go over the waves, look for the sets and then yes she did it....turned around, caught one and popped up to ride it in. I was amazed. All of this in less than an hour!
If you are 7 or 70 Corolla Surf Shop is the place to come for a lesson. No matter what your level they have an instructor for you. The lesson my daughter got was second to none. By the time we left the beach she was no longer apprehensive and wanted me to rush down to Kitty Hawk so she could get right back out and practice her new skills!
The shopping at the store rocks too! You can find anything you might need. From boards to flip flops- tshirts to bathing suits they've got it all! We picked up an awesome back pack, coin purse and rash guard. You definitely cannnot walk in without getting something to take back home with you.
If in the Outer Banks take the ride to Corolla Surf Shop and get a lesson...or two or three. It will be the best money and time you spent on your vacation!!!!

Very well run operation. Outfitted our girls (13 + 14) in wetsuits and went to the beach. Dry land instruction first, followed by the water. 2 instructors to 6 students - great ratio. Staff was courteous, friendly and kind, but at the beach and in the shop. A great attraction!
