My family and I had the opportunity to visit the Spanish mustangs in Corolla, NC with our AMAZING host, Gary. Not only did he ensure that we saw over 20 mustangs (four families) on our 2 hour excursion; Gary entertained the adults and children with fun facts, personal stories, and even the coolest panoramic family photo that we have ever taken. If you have the chance to check this out, be sure to ask for Gary!! You will not be disappointed.

This is an odd review because we were not able to take the safari trip due a medical emergency. We booked the Back Country Safari for 4 people in order to see the wild horses and the 4x4 area of OBX. My wife and I had to leave due to an emergency but our friends did take the trip. First of all, we were given a full refund due to our cancellation with NO hassle - EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. Secondly, our friends did take the trip and had a fantastic time! They told us all about the excursion and showed us their pics. We fully intend to return and take the adventure in the future. Back Country Safari Tours has earned my business.

Our guide Gary was informative and funny. He made the trip fun and gave us great information along the whole tour.
Taught us a little trick when taking a "pano" picture that was neat as well.
The other options were way more expensive and some did not even offer the tour for our smaller child in our party (9 month old).
This was a great tour and experience for the money over all for our family because we had 9 people with ages ranging from 9 months to 36 years.

The Back Country Safari Wild Horse Tour we took was made all the more interesting and fun due to our driver and guide, Gary. He was a wealth of historic information about the wild horses and kept the children and adults entertained with his jokes. He knew exactly where to look for the horse families. Ask for Gary if you go.

Outstanding trip. We had a group of 11 one being 6. Our tour guy was Gary and he was truly entertaining. He went above and beyond to explain the history of the wild horses and threw in jokes now and then to hold everyone's attention. During our tour we were able to find two different groups of horse families. The horses were wonderful to see but I believe Gary was more entertaining and is what made our trip so wonderful. Thanks to Gary for his knowledge and dedication to the wild horses you can tell that he cares a lot about these animals.

We had the best time! We went on Jan 1,2020 and were advised to wear layers, which was good advice. Gator, our guide, was so interesting and fun. He knew the area like the back of his hand and told us all kinds of information about the area. We were expecting to see maybe 5 or 6 mustangs, and we saw 25! It was a trip of a lifetime!

This was a great experience that we enjoyed very much. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the horses and cared a great deal for them. He shared a lot of information about the area as well. He was careful driving while we were riding on the back of the truck as well. I would definitely recommend this company and would be back again.

Early morning Wild horse tour was a win! Gary was funny, engaging and knowledgeable. We had 5 young children in our group and he did his best to help them engage and enjoy. We saw two herds of horses. Beautiful weather, chilly, but perfect way to start the day. We recommend the early morning tour!

The Wild Horse Tour with Back Country Safari Tour was amazing...the truck tour of the beach was fun and well worth the price for the two hours... saw most of the horses and learned quite a bit about them and their habitat.
the was not a bad seat on the tour.. easy to see everything around you
Gary, our tour guide, knew everything about the area and kept the crew entertained throughout the trip... we learned quite a bit.

Our guide was Gary. We had a great time. I wished I had brought less with me like just keys and phone, since I was paranoid much of the time that my stuff would blow away out of the back of the truck. I have a herniated disc in my neck and I could withstand the bumps in the ride. I was only a tiny bit sore after. Our guide joked about trying to hit every hole in the sand but in reality, he did his best to make it as smooth as possible. Every person on our trip was kind to our family as well. We couldn’t have asked for a better trip. The guides do their best to get you to the horses but it’s not always easy or possible as I understand it. Still these guys make the trip fun and you learn so much. Our young children just wanted food during the trip - that’s all the “issues” we had.

My husband and I would like to know if there are tours that are calmer for handicapped people. I noticed some said that the ride is bumpy but that you can ask for a more sedated one. Is this true? Would love to go but not sure if ride would be too rough,

I haven't had any experiences I thought were "smoother", although i am quite sure it varies by the people paying and the tour guide. Some of the older guides are a bit gentler. I would recommend calling ahead and explaining your particular situation. They do try to be accomodating

do you have to make reservation ahead of time for your trips
Written April 19, 2016
Yes, especially during high tourist season. Fortunately, I was able to get a tour on the same day when I called first thing in the morning because we were there off season -Nov-Dec.

Could you recommend a nice bed and breakfast close to your business? Also, I see that the address is on Austin Street, but in another section on the web it also cites the Corolla Light Town Center. Thanks and we can't wait to see the mustangs in late April (yep, already booked!)

Actually, The Inn At Corolla Light is a fantastic B&B just a half mile from where we depart. 252 453 3340. We take many of their guests on excursions and I recommend them highly.

Is the next week a good time for the safari? else we need to plan a visit later.
Written December 22, 2015
I would think it would depend on the weather at the time... Looks like it's going to be a little warmer than normal, so it might be a good time.
