For many years I have wanted to go see the wild horses and this past month 7-2022 it became a reality
The tour did not disappoint and the guide was like I hand picked him myself.
Ryan aka Coach was informative, accommodating and quite funny. The weather was a bit blustery and the tide was rising early but to no avail, Ryan took us through the water up to the horses and around many times. You may think the price is a bit much or you might find a cheaper chicken else where but beware and just know this is the best.
The care this company has for these animals is beyond compare.

We enjoyed a tour with Wild Horse Adventure Tours a few years ago, so when we were visiting the Outer Banks with some family who had never been here before we did not hesitate to book another Hummer tour. Stu was a great guide and was able to find two groups of horses even though it is early in the season. We really enjoy the modified Hummvees and Stu always circled back so passengers on both side had a great view of the horses from the elevated seats. It was a windy and chilly early morning ride, and blankets were provided to those who wanted them, but well worth a little chill to experience a side of the island that is very lightly developed and not at all commercialized. I highly recommend booking with WHAT if you want to see the 4x4 beaches and hopefully some horses too!

So when you come down to Corolla, of course seeing the horses is one of those things you have to do. There are a few tours available, but we chose this one because, who doesn’t want to ride in a Hummer? And because they give you an entire row, even if there’s just two of you, so you don’t have to pack elbow to elbow with random people. The vehicles are laid out very nice, they’re roomy (some of the other tours looked to have kinda cramped seating).
We loaded up and headed out with John as our driver/guide. If you book this tour and you are lucky enough to get John as your guide, you are in for a pretty amazing experience. I’ll start by saying John absolutely made our tour memorable, guy has a personality you don’t forget, such a good dude. Hanging out with him for two hours was a blast, we talked a little bit about his service in the Marines on the drive up, and he has a huge passion for the horses and the outer banks which was really cool. We learned all kinds of neat facts about the horses, how they ended up here, how they socialize, how they move around, John knew it all. As we drove around we learned about the history and geography of the outer banks, we learned about different expeditions, we learned about the maritime forest and how the coastline is forever moving. Hanging out with John, hearing stories, and learning about different aspects of the area and the wildlife was worth the price of admission all by itself.
On to the horses, John told us there are approximately 100 of them in the area. If there are around 100, he found the majority of them for us. We got to see so many groups, even the new foals. John made sure we were all able to get some amazing videos and pictures, he gave us plenty of time to take our shots, even repositioned the vehicle multiples times so everyone on board had a front row seat. This was the best outing we took while in OBX, and that’s saying a lot.
When we got back, I realized I didn’t have any cash on me, and we really wanted to give John a tip. Ran across the street to the store to get cash, came back and John was gone. We probably looked like crazy people, but we followed the line of hummers up to the gas station just so we could find John, give him a tip, and thank him again. So do make sure to have cash on you if you plan on tipping, and you’ll definitely want to tip. We’d recommend this to absolutely everybody, don’t think twice, it’s worth it.
John, if you get to read this, you rock. Thanks once again for giving us an experience we’ll never forget.

We had a fabulous adventure with my 90 years old mother in May 2023. We went in the evening 5:30 time for our 2 hour adventure. They assured us that my mother would enjoy it and there would be no concerns. Boy were they right! Janae was so attentive to securing my mother into the front seat which included a blanket for warmth. We saw many, (about 25-30) horses including a 2 week old foul. It was an education of an area that we have vacationed for many years and did not know the history. Janae delivered her education with a flair & humor that made the trip the high-light of our trip. We quickly recommended the trip to others in our vacation community. I know two other couples will try it out. My sister will even to return in 2 weeks to share with her husband for their 45th wedding anniversary. As I said the Outer Banks has been a yearly trip and we never even considered this an option, as we wrote it off as a "tourist thing to do" NOPE! I highly suggest you try this out as it will now become part of our yearly trip.

This was the perfect company to use to see wild horses. You need not check any further. Top reasons are: 1. The Hummers are huge, each person has a seat facing foward. 2. The seats are stacked stadium style, so you can clearly see directly in front of you, no need to crane your neck. 3. You are in a hummer (how cool is that to tell people!) it was very easy to get around the areas and it was not very bumpy. 4. The other hummer that was out with our group went on different roads, as to have the best chance of spotting horses. The guides were constantly texting with each other on were to go. Janee was great fun to be with and she was very knowledgeable about the history of the area as well as the horses. It was our first time in the area and I have wanted to see wild horses my whole life. I must admit, I envisioned seeing 20 or 30 horses running together. We quickly learned this is NEVER the case. The largest harem ( group of horses) in the area is 7 and for the most part you would see 2 or 3 horses harens. The afternoon we were out, was very windy and overcast. We saw a total of 6 horses, back in the dune roads away from the oceans. It was worth it for the experience and the fun ride. If anyone asks which place to use for a tour I will absolutely say wild horses hummer tours! I saw others on the beach piled in the back of benchs on pickup trucks. Those people did not look comfortable at all! Remember it's 2 hours and you don't get out to look around so you want to be comfortable.

This open air ride is a lot of fun! We went with this company because it was recommended by our VRBO owner. However, we also liked that the seats were actual car seats with seat belts rather than a row/bench of seats. It made it extra comfortable. Our driver was a great guide through the area. The best part was going in the evening and driving back along the beach at sunset. We had pink skies over the ocean, and some grazing horses in front of the sunset on the dunes. I will say that although it was fun to see the horses, they were up in the yards of the houses and not down on the beach. Not sure if that was just the day, but all the promos show them playing on the beach. We didn't see any on the beach during our 2 hours trip (except two on the dunes), but it was still a fun excursion.

I've toured with this company every year in the Fall for the past five years and twice in the Spring. Past experiences have been amazing- multiple horse sightings, wonderful witty guides and interesting commentary. Even on the rare occasion when we didn't see many horses the engaging banter and stories from the guides made up for it, especially Wiley.
I convinced everyone staying at our rental house to go on this tour as a group last week and I was embarrassed by the outcome. The guide Shaun was unenthusiastic and not at all engaging. We needed to ask her questions instead of her freely talking about the area, horses, history etc. We saw 4 single horses until we were almost off the beach when a member of our party spotted a harem at the dune line and yelled for the guide to stop and go back. I understand the horses are wild, have thousands of acres to roam, and there is no guarantee they will be spotted on the tour. The guide really makes or breaks these tours, especially when horse sightings are limited. I suggest requesting Wiley, Stu, or Ryan for the best experience.

We went on a Wild Horse Tour with “Outlaw” Tom.. It was by far the best family excursion we have taken. He was so friendly and his humor kept us laughing the whole time.
He was so accommodating, patient and gentle with the two toddlers we had on board (2 & 3 years old). Especially when it came to the bumpy ride… They haven’t stopped talking about Mr. Tom, riding on the beach and seeing horses… Our 11 year old loved hearing his wild stories and seeing all the horses too.
Tom knew so much about the horses and Corolla. He was on point to where the horses were. We got to see so many majestic stallions. We even got some safe close up pictures of them playing and rolling around in the sand on the beach.
What amazed us was how sincere he was to these beautiful horses and their habitat. He was so mindful to keep distance for their sake but to get us beautiful pictures. He was all about preserving the environment these horses thrive on and following all the rules. We absolutely loved his generosity and empathy for these amazing animals.
He was very mindful and safe driving on the beach and thru the rough terrain. We felt very safe with him and in the Hummer (it was a very safe, well made vehicle, it had actual seatbelts for our children’s car seats to hook into and sturdy roll bars).
You can tell Tom truly loves what he does, which made this tour ten times more meaningful and memorable.
Everyone was super friendly. I’m sure every tour guide is fantastic, just from seeing the faces of all the people exiting their H1 Hummers… But we wanted to recommend you request Tom and get a private tour.. It was by far the best decision we made. It made our trip to North Carolina the best experience ever.
Thank you Tom!

This tour was well worth the travel, time, and expense, to see the horses, with Wild Horse Expert & Guide, Ryan “The Coach” Sulkowski. The initial group of strangers touring together became “family” by the tour’s end. Ryan tailored the tour for the enjoyment of ages 4 to 60+, enlightening all with facts, folklore, comedy relief and exceptional beach driving skills. He made sure we all came away with photos of the majestic Wild Horses. I will return for additional tours, no doubt!

If you plan to do a wild horse tour, Wild Horse Adventures is definitely the way to go. Tour guides are excellent, Ryan, " The Coach " was our guide and was very knowledgable, full of information. The Hummer setup is ideal, as you are in seat belted, bucket seats, which after the experience is well welcomed as you will get bounced around quite often going over the sandy beaches and inner roads ( sand ways ) . Sit in the back if you want more bounce, sit in the front if you want less bounce. Just the ride alone getting bounced around was worth the experience. Other competitors setup in their vehicles are not as nice. From what I saw, kind of aluminum bleacher type seating in those vehicles, probably hard on the bum and after getting bounced around, probably sore after. Yes, we saw horses, beautiful. However, not what I expected. In all honesty, expected seeing the horses in some sort of santuary, of natural undeveloped area where they roam free with few 4X4's, tour companies etc. Unfortunately, maybe based on the time of year, found an environment where these horses are supposedly protected, are among hundreds of 4x4s parked on the beach side by side, like parking in a mall parking lot, too much development of homes in this area, overflowing garbage cans and just way to many tour companies driving around these neighborhoods in search of the horses. Probably distrubing to the residents or vacationers there and certainly in my opinion, doesn't help the horses. The horses were moved from Corolla to this area to protect them, allow them to roam in their own natural environment, however too much commercialization is going on here. From house building, to those roaming around in their 4x4 toys. Nothing against 4x4s having fun or having that experience, but if you want to help the horses, limit their viewing in a real protected area, with minimum human contact. Yes, I'm guilty, we did the tour to see the horses, but I would not do again, or knowing more in advance, would have not done.

Hello,
Thanks for your feedback, and for recommending our tour company. I do agree with you concerning the development of the area, and the excessively crowded beach in the summer months. It's a difficult situation considering majority of the land in the 4x4 area has been privately owned since even before the horses were moved up there, and now most of that property is being sold and built upon as the demand to stay in that area has increased. The benefit of the tour companies is that we have experienced and trained drivers taking people out to view the horses and educate the public... this helps minimize the amount of people renting a jeep or taking their own vehicle up there that may not drive as safe or know all of the laws. In addition to each tour guide being extensively trained through our company, they also go through a yearly training with the Corolla Wild Horse Fund (non-profit that protects and manages the herd), along with continuous communications with the Wild Horse Fund to help spot any questionable behavior or injured horses... and lastly, we contribute portions of our tour revenue to the Wild Horse Fund. At the moment, there is still plenty of land for them to roam on, including about 4 miles of protected and undeveloped land, and we all do hope they can continue to stay safe and thrive in this area. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is doing a fantastic job at protecting, conserving, and managing the herd... and we will continue to support them in any way possible to accomplish this mission.

Go to their web site to find out. I would be surprised if they weren't running these trips in late March. We went in late October. It was chilly but sunny and they had lap blankets for because the vehicles are open air jeeps.

I recently did the tour with my 87 y.o. father. My sister and I tried all the vehicles of the different tour groups before deciding on this vehicle. we thought he would be best suited in the seat next to the driver which is like getting in any regular vehicle. With the assistance of the very nice staff, he was able to get up into the first row of the vehicle stadium seating. It was a great seat for viewing and he had no difficulty with getting in/out or motion of the vehicle. He is already talking of doing it again when we visit in April! Hope this helps!
