We spent 2 hours here as a break from hiking. The kids never once had their phones out as they spent a lot of time just skipping rocks and walking along the river. The bamboo forest was cool too. Spot to feed the ducks provides food you can purchase for them. Water doesn't move fast so you can wade out... More

We decided to stop at Oconaluftee Islands Park to explore the river. It is a nice, calm place to picnic and relax. The water is moving through the area, but the current is not strong. And like all of the creek and river water in the area, it is crystal clear.

As we visit each year at Christmas, we so enjoy the lights on and around the islands. We typically go at night and feel totally safe. There are usually a few families besides us that are walking around in the evening. The river is beautiful and it's a wonderful place to sit and unwind. Convenient parking as well.

It is a nice area to walk, but dog owners who travel usually will be careful about "dog litter" . If they put up some system like they do at rest stops, I am sure it will remain clean. I was really put off by all the "no dogs allowed" postings. With such a large area to walk around by... More

We enjoyed walking by this pretty little park and watching the many ducks swim and feed around the river's edge. It seems like a good place for a picnic and has lots a spots to take beautiful photographs.

A lovely, well-maintained place for a stroll along the river. We watched several fisherman standing in the river, enjoyed seeing LOTS of ducks. Only disappointment: Dogs Not Allowed. Such a shame.

This was the nicest thing to do in cherokee. After a long drive through the mountains. The rest in cherokee was very disapointed. But good enough to find your hotel here.

Picnic tables, benches by the river, perfect spot for a break or a picnic. The bees were somewhat annoying but you will want to go walking along the river anyway. Bring some bread for the ducks that congegate along the river.
