    Trail ride
My wife and I went on the 2.5 ride and had a great time. From check-in thru the ride finish, everything was professionally done. Our 2 trail guides were nice, polite, informative. We had a slight accident on the return trip to the stables, when a lady accidently fell off her horse. she wasn't hurt, but the guides got to her quickly, assessed the situation, notified the stables as to the situation and she was able to get back on the horse and finish the ride. The whole experience with Smokemont was great.

    Family fun
This was a surprise hit with our family. My 18 yr old and 15 yr old loved riding the 1 hr trail through the smoky mountains. The staff was polite and the horses were fairly calm. Riding through the creek was a highlight of the ride. I would recommend wearing pants to ride.

    I'd go again
The owner was very considerate when we didn't get the message the time had been changed. I would recommend giving a cell phone number and checking in the morning as to the appropriate arrival time. We did the 2 1/2 hour trip to the waterfall and found it very pleasant. The horses are well kept and well behaved. The staff were very thoughtful in assigning horses to riders and ensuring the equipment was well suited to the rider.

    Avoid horse Molly
The horses are larger and appear to be well care for. The waterfall ride is very enjoyable with great scenery I have now been in two waterfall outings and enjoyed both overall. The only piece of feedback is the horse Molly Mae is not responsive to commands and rides extremely close to the edge of the trail which is concerning when there is a steep drop. Because of the horse Molly Mae I honestly would be hesitate ride again at Smokemont but still enjoy my time with 2 rides there. I did bring this concern up both on ride and at dismount and was kind of laughed off with my concern.

Be aware that it rains relatively often in this area in the summer and you are riding rain or shine. Unfortunately, we hit a heavy rainstorm, which was fine and we kept riding for about an hour until it started to thunder. The horses started to freak so we were required to stop. The guides told us we had to wait out the storm at the stop-no shelter and still raining and it was cold. About 20 minutes of waiting and no end in sight, the guides started to correspond with the owners/management about if they were going to stop the ride and we were going to be picked up. They mentioned we would get half the deposit back. My family (2 kids and 2 adults) decided regardless we wanted to end the ride along with another couple because now we have been in the soaking cold rain for 1hr 30 mins and it was still thundering and we were not risking getting back in the horses who were freaked out already. We had to walk about a mile down the mountain dodging horse poop and mud. Finally, we were picked up and brought back to stable. We inquired about our partial refund and we were told absolutely not since we could have stuck out the weather and eventually resume the ride. I guess they don’t care it was dangerous to resume the ride and they sure didn’t care that their clients had to sit in the miserable cold rain because they didn’t want to pull the plug on the ride. If they pull the plug in the ride, they have to offer a refund, so they are extremely reluctant to do so......regardless of safety and making sure it’s a pleasurable experience. The ride up was pretty but became a bit boring an hour in after looking at the same scenery. Way too expensive for what we got.

Front office staff pleasant, patient, and my phone reservation easy. Orientation a pleasant experience. Guide helpful, caring, and observant. Took the 2.5 hours ride which I would say was overpriced due to the lack of diversity on the trail ride. Wanted to cross stream, but did not and from what I gathered later, that was only done on the 1 hr. ride. Was eager to get some pictures of my fellow riders riding which usually is possible on a trail with a few curves or switchbacks, which puts you broadside with other riders, but this trail for the most part was straight, and unfortunately, the same straight trail all the way back to the stables. Waterfall was modest and beautiful, but was hoping for more.

I love this place. I have been up to Smokemont almost every weekend while I'm on a temporary work assignment in Asheville. The guides are friendly and the horses are some of the best to ride. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great way to see the Smokies on horse back

Our 3-generation family, age 12 to 70, had a fabulous time on the 2.5 hour waterfall trail ride. There was a larger group, but the 4 of us had a guide to ourselves, so it felt like a private group ride. Our guide, Dawson, was an absolute delight! He is extremely knowledgeable about local flora and fauna, as a student of Natural Resources, and impressed my retired-forester father by pointing out all the tree species. He was helpful, engaging, and kept the 12 year old entertained. The scenery is phenomenal, riding along the Bradly fork of the Oconaluftee River. I would highly recommend adding this adventure to your trip to the Great Smoky Mountains!

First time riding horses in the GSMNP and it was a wonderful way to really see the park. When hiking, we're so busy watching our feet, that we miss a lot of the beauty until we remember to stop and look. So my husband and I are by no means experienced riders. I was a little nervous when I mounted Rocky, but soon relaxed and was able to enjoy the ride. Rocky was easy to handle, although he did not stay the required 10 feet behind the horse in front which made me nervous, so I periodically had to try and hold him back. We had about 8 people in our group with one guide in the front. I was second to last. The guide (don't remember his name) stopped every few minutes to make sure we all stayed together. Personally, I would have liked a second guide in the back as well just incase something went wrong, it would have been nice to have a guide closer. We opted for the 2.5 hour waterfall ride with was beautiful. Beautiful clear day, sunny and the trail was dry for the most part. We took a break at the waterfall for a few minutes and then hopped back on for the ride back (along the same trail). About 10 min from the end, something spooked a horse 2 in front of me. I thought he stumbled, so I was very careful taking my horse through the area and had no problem. My husband's horse, however, must have been spooked by the same thing because he bolted for a second. No harm though. Husband didn't fall. All in all a beautiful ride, but people need to remember, these are horses and no matter how experienced they are, and tame, they're animals. People have to respect that. Horses stumble (mine did once or twice), and things can spook them. Don't miss this beautiful opportunity to see the park, but always remember it's not a walk around a corral. The 2.5 hour was great, although my butt was sore. I also have back issues, and it was a little bit sore after. The staff was great.

This is a great experience for the novice rider or someone that has never ridden before. If you are an avid or experienced it's nice just for the scenery. The staff are so courteous and helpful. We struck up a conversation with 2 of them and they were just as genuine as one could ask for. Horses were very tame and they take the time to match your experience to the right horse. Just a fun thing to do for couples or families.

We took the 2 1/2 hour ride which was perfect. Our guide, Buck, was full of information about the area and made sure we had an enjoyable ride. The horses are well cared for. I’m just not sure there are enough to keep them rotated given how many people were riding with us, how many before and how many that were waiting when we came back. Busiest time of the year. All of the staff were professional.

This was the best trail ride that we have done. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The horses appeared to be in good shape and were very gentle. I chose this company for me and my 11 year old daughter. We had a not so great experience with another company last year and she was a little nervous. Our horses were great and the best part of the one hour ride is crossing the creek! We will do this again!

We did the 2.5 hour trip. Just beautiful. The trail gets muddy because of the rain the mountains get in the summer but the horses are very sure-footed. We stopped at the waterfall for 10-15 minutes to take some pictures. We rode along a stream/mini river most of the way. Absolutely beautiful and lush scenery. Tripp was our guide and gave us some history of the area. At the beginning of the trip is an old church (not in operation and is the oldest in N. Carolina) that you can go to after the ride. Just go the trail's parking lot (not the stable's) that you past on the way to the stables and it's a very short climb up (you can see it from the lot). The ride was wonderful and you get to bring your phone/camera. Several stables I checked did not allow you to bring your phones on the rides. Highly recommend Smokemont Riding Stables!
