We were staying in downtown so we thought we would walk over to the fourth ward. Maybe two houses are worth looking at and there isn’t much other scenery on the walk. I would stop at the cemetery on the way back it’s worth a walk around to see all the original settlers.

Plans changed and we had nothing to do on Saturday morning from 10am - 1pm. We hit the Visitor's Center and found a brochure for a walking tour of 4th Ward. I LOVE Victorian architecture, and without my dogs on this trip, I needed exercise! The brochure is educational and there are lots of places to shop and eat on the perimeter blocks. Beautiful parks and the residents are VERY friendly. You wouldn't expect people to be happy that you are gawking at their house, but they were!

The Grand Old Ladies are about 75 homes between the streets of 10th and 5th , Graham and Tryon Streets. Our favorite part of this section of Charlotte were the houses on 9th Street. These beautiful homes were build in the 1860's and have withstood the test of time. Their grandeur is nestled among the tall modern skyscrapers. Shaded tree-lined streets welcome you back to a simpler place in time when neighborhoods had stores and neighbors knew each other. Charlotte is such a new town that it is a breath of fresh air to see they have retained some of its history through these houses, churches and cemetery. If you want to learn some thing of Charlotte's history- go read some of the tombstones. They are quite interesting.Allow at least 2 hours.

We stopped at the Visitor's center to get the map and guide. We walked from there over two streets and down to the back of the Presbyterian church.
We found it quite amusing that the map describes almost every building and date built in the Ward, including apartment building built in 1969 or 1985, as well as the historic ones from the late 1800s and early 1900s. There were also some beautiful new builds that fit in very well with the area.
We first passed by the Fourth Ward park as it looked boring. On the way back, we discovered it was quite long, filled with interesting flowers and plants that were labelled. There are cute birdhouses along the main walk...and one even had an occupant.
As we walked down the streets, we very much enjoyed the beautiful landscaping, the colorful buildings and the huge trees in the area. One area called, Settlers, is a condo area that was built to preserve some huge trees in its area.
We stopped at Ninth and Pine at the tavern to have a drink and rest our legs. We recommend the cherry cola or sprite. And there is a restroom.
I think in total, from the Visitor's Center, we spent two and a half to three hours, stopping frequently to read the descriptions and examine the landscaping.
I love to walk historic neighborhoods and this one was quite special. My favorite house, in an Italianate style was brightly painted, with wonderful landscaping. But what impressed me was that they had amazing porch lights to go with the building. It is a small thing, but showed the pride of restoration.
Although we went on a cool day, threatening rain, there is a lot of shade, so it could be walked on a sunnier, hotter day.

Thoroughly enjoyed walking through this area of beautiful old historic homes. Wish we had seen this map before embarking on the tour. Gives a little synopsis of many of the homes in the area, very interesting.

Ok, my opinion is that it isn't a big draw but worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. First of all, what is the Fourth Ward? It's a small residential neighborhood containing many charming wooden early last century homes, a few apartment blocks from about the same time, tony recent condominium towers and row homes - and a Salvation Army social housing complex. It also has a lovely winding park and a small early 19th century "settlers" cemetery whose tombstone inscriptions are mostly illegible. It's all contained within an area of about 4 by 3 blocks which is smaller than the city advertises and can be covered on foot in a few hours. I think it's charm is magnified by being an older residential survivor adjacent to a downtown Charlotte made impressive by modern corporate skyscrapers, upscale hotels, and condo towers. The Fourth Ward must be a reminder of what downtown Charlotte once looked like before the wrecking ball. This is not to say that modern downtown Charlotte isn't worth a visit. It has theatre and sports venues, many restaurants, wine bars, and a few notable municipal buildings. Unlike many other modernized city cores, Charlotte's is vibrant. A walk through the Fourth Ward provides some welcome quiet and relaxation which is exactly what I was looking for the day I visited.

Stop by the convention and visitors bureau and get a 4th ward map. Walk along the streets and read history and interesting facts while you are standing in front of the building. We found it very enjoyable. Would recommend.

This really isn’t a tourist destination. Who wants to see houses and condos? It’s a green spot in the uptown area.
