Charlotte's Afro-American Cultural Center celebrates African-American contributions to US society. Their new airy facility, named for Charlotte's first African-American mayor, Harvey Gant, was designed by Philip Freelon. Current exhibitions feature the work of YoYo Lander and Khalif Tahir Thompson as well as an eight film rotation of perspectives from women of color.

The Global Rhythms Dance Workshop taught by Soumayah Nanji was an amazing experience! Soumayah made learning new dances so much fun for me and provided insightful information about the history of the dances. Who knew Afrobeat is different from AfrobeatS?! AfrobeatS is the recent expression of traditional Afrobeat. I can't wait to attend Soumayah's next workshop!

Curator Hannah from Culture Vultures explained visual depictions of this Vision & Spirit Art collection! We visited this center on a whim & was not disappointed! The Vision & Spirit Art collection fearured here was amazingly breath taking! The curator was Hanna with group culture vultures & this curators passion to give the history on the art; inspired my 12 year old daughter! My 12 year old never heard of these non main stream African American artist like Willie Little, Faith Ringgold & Chelle Barbour; we didn't know they exsisted till today. The art portion of the museum was outstanding! We saw an art piece that was bought for 21 million! This Art was just Amazing Art! The curator name was Hanna! Her passion & description of each art piece was life changing. To hear the naritive of the artist intention for creation on each piece really enhanced the experience

This is an excellent museum. When we visited, there was an exhibit called, Choose Your Weapon: Views from the Front Lines of the War for Black Lives. This exhibit is powerful and moving. Tears were shed during a video. This exhibit is showing through October, 2021. Also there was an exhibit called Vision & Spirit: African American Art | Works From The Bank Of America Collection. This was a great collection of photographs and art. It has since closed. This museum represents a thorough depiction of African American Art and Culture. Don't miss it.

With so much opportunity to showcase African American art, sadly the museum did not rise to the occasion. There were only two small galleries each having similar themed artwork. Hopefully museum directors and curators will obtain and expand the portfolio of artwork that this museum deserves for future museum goers to enjoy.

The centre contains art exhibitions which were very good and made it well worth a visit. It was quiet and relaxing so it was easy to study and reflect upon the work on display. There was work that communicated equality issues justifiably well but also some other impressive paintings.

Too expensive. Not much to see really. The selection of art did not seem to reflect the theme, merely that they were created by people with Black heritage rather than about culture and heritage.
Very nice and knowledgable young lady on reception.

When I visited Charlotte for my first time, I made a stop here to this museum. One of the exhibits I saw was Choose Your Weapon. It was moving and brought out so many emotions from how stories about police brutality has adversely affected our community. I went on to check out cultural art from other exhibits which is beautiful. This is a must see.

I normally don't like going to museums but this one was the perfect size. There were three different exhibits that you could visit but that weren't so big that they are overwhelming. We visited on a weekday so it was't very many people and you could actually take your time and take in each exhibit.

Check out the program as there are always presentations as well as the museum part. Easy to get to in center city Charlotte on the edge of the art district on
Tryon. Public transportation and nearby parking garage. Beautiful gift shop. I live close and visit frequently when I'm in town. It's unique.
