This is one of the better spas that I've been to, and I have been to many. The service is excellent and the spa is serene. It has beautiful lounges, a steam room, sauna, an indoor whirlpool, salt walls, outdoor pool, and a meditation terrace! I booked the Sand Hills Massage, which included deep tissue and Swedish, along with aromatherapy and hot stones. My therapist was wonderful. Overall, this was a terrific and relaxing spa. I hope to return.

My friend and I had a girls' weekend- the hotel was full but at a friend's recommendation we made reservations for the spa. We were given a choice of hours we could have our massage and ended up booking 7PM appointments since they could only take us simultaneously at that time. The body treatment/massage was wonderful! What they DIDN'T tell us was, every patron MUST leave promptly at 8PM. We were done at 7:56- they did not even want to let us shower off! (We did so, anyway.) We were, quite literally kicked out. They were knocking on the shower doors demanding we leave at 8:10. There were other ladies in the locker rooms complaining as well, as they had dinner reservations at the restaurant and were being rushed out with wet hair. At 8:15 the spa attendant came to nag some more; it really was not her fault. We explained that after paying $175 each, we did not wish to be rushed out. She called the manager at our request. He listened to our issue but did nothing except to keep explaining that they had to close at 8. I asked how the spa could justify booking a 7pm appointment and expect the patron to just get off the massage table and walk out. He responded that he had never had this issue before, which I find very hard to believe. As a business owner I would have invited patrons back the next day to enjoy the facilities- or offered a complimentary service- anything to make sure the patron was satisfied. This man knew nothing about customer service. We probably will not return.

We did not stay at the hotel since we live locally but booked massages, facials, and pedicures and spent the afternoon at the spa. Everyone had a great experience with their service providers. We were there during the week. It was not unduly crowded and there were always staff ready to accommodate your needs. The spa is large enough to accommodate a good number of patrons easily. Booking a treatment costing $100 or more allows you to go early as we did and enjoy the sauna, whirlpool, meditation area, or just quiet lounging in either the coed or same sexed lounge. During the summer, you can also enjoy the outside pool as we did. I gave the spa a 5 star review due to its great service, excellent staff, and quality of the facility. However, the pool service was not as good and unfortunately took way too long to get our lunch.

My daughter & I were given LARGE spa gift cards to enjoy together. Ironically, they took payment without letting our gifter know they were closed for renovations. We have been trying/waiting for over a year to get an appointment. They only allow hotel guests to book weekends. Ironically, this is NOT our first time at their spa. (It is nice but NOT all that honestly!) But after this recent experience it will certainly be our last. They have lost a past and future customer… I do NOT recommend anymore.

I've stayed in the hotel multiple times and I've visited the spa several times a year for many years. The rooms are top notch and the spa facilities are very nice (it's not the Grove Park or anything, but it's lovely and luxurious).

I am disappointed in the spa reservation policy, though. I wanted to book a trip for 4 women, and the day that worked for everyone is a Saturday. However, because they now only allow spa reservations for hotel guests from noon Friday through noon Sunday, there is no way for a group to have a Saturday spa day. The woman I spoke to claims that this is an old policy, but I've been going to that spa for years and I have never once been turned down for an appointment as long as I booked more than 2 weeks in advance, including on Saturdays. I understand that availability is limited, but it seems like a group booking a month in advance should have no problem getting the time that they want.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments. Due to an increase in spa activity, we did adjust our parameters in 2015 to prioritize the needs of our hotel guests on the weekends. We apologize for any disappointment we may have caused and hope to welcome your group at another time. Warmest regards, The Umstead Spa

I love this spa. It's not a regular thing, as it is prohibitively expensive, but for a special treat or girls' day out, it's perfect. The spa is located in the Umstead Hotel on the SAS campus in Cary. There is a separate parking area and entrance for spa guests, which is nice, if like me, you like to go ultra casual (think old yoga pants) to the spa. Upon being greeted at the spa you are led into a small but nice changing area where you put on a robe - undies are optional - and given surprisingly uncomfortable flip flops. There are two waiting areas for services, a downstairs female only with fireplace and an upstairs co-ed. There are attendants who will bring you water or anything else you want to drink, and the upstairs lounge has water and cucumber water and some granola-type munchies. It is very serene. I've had facials, massages and pedicures at the spa. I LOVE the facials. They have a very comprehensive approach to skin care and will write down recommendations but do not try to "sell" you on products. The massages are nice too. The entire staff is friendly. Before or after treatment, they have indoor and outdoor whirlpools, steam and sauna you can enjoy. They have showers with the basics so you don't need to bring toiletries, although the shampoo is surprisingly so-so for a spa - maybe because it's gender neutral? Note - if you only book a mani or pedi (spend less than $100), you won't have access to the spa area, as the nail area is separate. I think this is ridiculous but I guess they don't want people cluttering up the facilities by booking only one cheapo treatment. The staff and management have been helpful and friendly every time I've been there and it's very casual and friendly, nothing like, say Homestead, where there's sort of a stuck-up, old-money vibe. One tip: bring a swimsuit because the outdoor whirlpool is co-ed and you can't enjoy it without a suit (or at least that's what the sign says)! Indoor whirlpool is clothing optional.

It's a lovely experience, but for the price, it should be better. Places I think it trying to emulate (such as Camelback spa) have hiking trails, exercise classes, poolside, quiet spaces, etc. complimentary with the service to turn a service into a half day restful retreat. No such amenities. Plus a hefty tip is mandatorily added on so the price is much higher than it seems and you don't get a say in how much you tip. But my husband gave me a generous gift card, so I went several times. Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely experience, but I had a much better massage in a warmer room at Massage Envy. The facial did nothing for my skin. It just seemed like it should be special and it wasn't.

Good luck getting an appointment if you are local or not staying at the hotel!!! Ridiculous. No 80 minute appointments before noon. Only 60 minute appointments because aestheticians go to lunch at noon! Really? I'm spending $300 or more and I have to worry about when the aesthetician takes lunch? Non-guests can book ONLY Monday thru Thursday - no weekend appts. Called July 17 and first avail is end of September for 1 hr. treatment. I am using a gift card or I wouldn't go. THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME. Why make local folks feel like trash when we are the ones who can promote or tear down this spa with bad reviews? The spa is beautiful, the aestheticians are great - but the level of snootiness is absurd. You are not curing cancer here, you are a spa with one less client which I'm sure you could care less about since I'm from Raleigh! Pfffft.... get over yourselves Goodnights.

Top shelf in every way. The staff goes above and beyond any guests expectations. The grounds are gorgeous.......serene, just lovely. The hotel itself is elegant and sleek all at the same time. The Umstead has an excellent reputation and is well known for their 5 star service. Always happy when I can go there for any reason at all.

The Umstead Spa has truly 5 star facilities! The locker room and attention to detail there makes for an incredibly relaxing and luxurious experience. After they made a mistake with booking, Mark, the manager, was so responsive, kind, and helpful, which only enhanced our experience and my high review of this place. We spent some time by the pool, which was well worth it, and even the attendants there treated us with the utmost professionalism. Great cocktails were served too!

My only suggestion would be in relation to my actual massage. We had a couples massage and instead of waiting for both me and my partner to be ready, my therapist (Will?) brought me into the room and did the interview. We then waited for my bf who was running late for a pretty awkward and uncomfortable 5 minutes. I wish they had just let me relax and wait in the lounge till my partner was there to make it feel like a true couples experience. My therapist also asked me how I was doing so frequently throughout the massage that I felt like I couldn't just relax.

The treatment was great, though, and these details are minor suggestions. I would highly recommend this Spa to anyone in NC!
