The beach is fascinating, full of wonders with every step you take. I hiked the 1 1/2 mile trail to Shelly Island because the 4 wheel drive vehicles that are necessary if you wish to drive on it tear up the beach and just generally...More

Apparently the island was a temporary creation of Mother Nature's and is no longer an island. It's now part of Buxton.

The island was a part of the amazing, natural geography of the island and the constantly moving sands. I came all of the way here and I never got to see it because it had moved. It was gone.... Don't come here to see Shelley...More

Shelly Island WAS a fun place to visit but sadly, it has faded back into the ocean. It was fun while it lasted, but like so much of the OBX, it is temporary.

Hard to believe we were on the OBX. We’ve lived in Manteo for many years, this was our first visit to Shelly Island. Beautiful water, sand and most of all shells. We came home with two 5 gallon buckets full. One girl had the biggest...More

Our yearly fishing trip was spent around the point and Shelly Island! At low tide you can drive out and back from the Island, but if you go later can get stuck on the Island. We walked out and fished from that end. The catch...More

The Island is no longer there, I understand. But to stay near by Buxton would be your best bet. I go down in April and October to to fish and we rent a house by the week.
