Lots of wind surfers to watch. We found hermit crabs and jellyfish along the shoreline. Didn’t get to test out the fact that it’s apparently shallow for a ways out so good for kids - will test that out next time. Was pretty crowded even with the bad weather and people not traveling as much as normal. I would imagine peak season it’s packed

Great place to watch the kite surfers and sunset.

Loved the easy walk to the beach and shallow waters, but the rough sand and muddy bottom was not for us. We prefer the ocean side.

The water is very shallow and clear, and great for little kids and adults who don't want to deal with waves and deep water. Kiteboarders and windsurfers enjoy Canadian Hole, and make it an entertaining stop. My son has snorkeled there, and we've also clammed and scalloped. The sunsets are amazing, and if you want truly gorgeous sunset photos, this is the place to stop.

For some 25 plus years this has been the most wonderful family spot. It was so nice to drive along the sound side waters edge but...NOT ANYMORE. Thanks to some ignorant judge in Raleigh, NC, the National Park Service is now charging $120.00 for this. This land was was donated in the 30's to the NPS for family recreation...now government has simply gone to far again with it's greed and we no longer visit.

Canadian Hole is noted for being one of the consistently best places to kiteboard & windsurf on the Atlantic coast. That, it is. But it's also much more! Families can park on the pavement, watch the kiters/surfers, have access to public restrooms and wash-off spigots, take chairs out into the shallows of Pamlico Sound and let the kids splash and play for hours...all free of charge! The spot also offers one of the best unobstructed views of the sunset between Avon and Buxton. No need to worry about elderly friends and family or children being knocked over by waves, this is an excellent spot for long walks while wading in ankle to knee-deep waters. Happy times await you!

This is a kitesurfing and windsurfing meca on highway 12 between Avon and Buxton. Great for sound swimming. Best sunset viewing! Has restroom and shower facilities and is well-maintained by the National Park Service

Canadian Hole is between Avon and Buxton, North Carolina, on Hatteras Island. It is a soundside beach with plenty of parking, restrooms, and shower facilities. I heard many describe this place as the best wind surfing spot in the US! There were many people here from Canada - I suppose this is why they call it Canadian Hole? Many times during my vacation, I spotted 50+ kite surfers and wind surfers here. I enjoyed coming here to relax on the soundside beach and watch all the people who are braver than me! This is also a great spot to swim and float in the water, which was nice since the waves on the beach can be quite extreme. There were many families here with young children. You can drive out with a four wheel drive on the beach and set up for the whole day!

If you do wind sports personally it is a must but you probably already know that. If you just want water that is warmer and wave free for the little ones it is perfect. If you want to sit and watch the action pack your cooler and enjoy.

There was a lot of windsurfing going on when we were there. it was a nice break from the busy sightseeing of the day. We enjoyed sitting on the shore taking it all in. Is a great place to take small children, shallow water great for wading.

We decided to spend a day here since there were many rip currents and the water was rough at the ocean near our house. The Pamlico Sound was so warm! It was nice to be able to go out so far and it was still shallow. We literally could sit in the water, enjoy the smaller waves and not worry about the kids as they played nearby. It was extremely windy though which kept knocking our umbrella over. It was also interesting to see all the wind surfers here. It was certainly a relaxing place to spend the day.
