We did the Nanthahala guided whitewater tour and LOVED it! We were concerned that the water temps @48F would make us so cold that the trip would be miserable. Much to our surprised it was a very comfortable trip. We definitely got wet, but the gear provided kept us warm enough that temp just wasn't an issue at all. Our guide "Big Wave" Dave was great and we had a ton of laughs! If you go, see if you can beat 7 spins at spin cycle!

Our family of 5 with kids ages 16, 13, and 10 did the guided river rafting adventure over spring break in early April. I was able to book this a few days prior as I was uncertain if we'd want to do this if the weather was cold, but decided to go for it when warm weather was predicted. I'm so glad we booked it as it is one of our best memories from our trip to the Smoky Mountains! The day we went was around 75 degrees and cloudy, but the temperature felt great. The water was cold and we were drenched at the end, but no one was too cold. They did have wetsuits available, but we wore thin long sleeve shirts and shorts and that was perfect. We were so fortunate that our guide was Big Joe and I will echo what many have written in these reviews- he was AMAZING. He made us all feel comfortable and safe, was funny and entertaining, and guided us perfectly through the rapids so that we maximized the fun while still feeling secure on the raft. After our rafting adventure we had dinner at River's End where the food was good, affordable, and kid friendly.
If you are thinking about booking this, go for it! We have 2 kids who aren't very adventurous and they all had a great time. Thanks for sharing the beauty of North Carolina with us, Big Joe!

The entire day was amazing and we will have memories for a life time. The guides for the zip line, Tayler and Jenn made the most frightening experience so much fun. The love the girls have for their jobs was infectious and we were all laughing and screaming with excitement before the first sip.
Make a day of it and ride the river after zip lining like us. It was the cherry on top of the day. the entire day was full of beauty and accomplishing the unimaginable

The whitewater rafting experience (incl child 7 years old) from start to finish was over 3 hours, and at the end I wished we could’ve gone back and done it all over again. We had such an amazing time on the beautiful river - wasn’t scary in the slightest. Mainly because we had an incredible guide - Big Joe. He was very experienced, told us all about the area/what we saw, and took great care of our son who sat next to him. I highly recommend this experience for families and for anyone visiting the NOC. And ask to raft with Big Joe!

I had such an amazing birthday river rafting. Big Joe was the best tour guide. He made sure to ask if anyone gets cold fast in which I do. So he got me a body suit & still two more jackets. Our trip was super fun and educational. We even ran into the Olympic coarse. Everyone had a blast. We met a couple celebrating their 1 year anniversary on our raft. How ironic that they got married on St. Thomas Virgin Islands where I am from. One of my best birthdays ever. I will surely cherish it.

The kayaking and rafting is the best in the southeast; and don’t forget to take a train ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad with many tour options available. There are excellent public golf courses available and Harrah’s Casino is only about 10 miles away. There are excellent restaurants from moderate to expensive but all are very good

My man, Big Joe. Amazing rafting adventure to go on with both friends and family, but Big Joe made the trip 10x more enjoyable. He's very knowledgeable about the history, the river, the flora, and fauna. He's also a talented enough guide to do cool tricks with the raft to make the trip even more enjoyable. 6/5 would go again.

This is a beautiful place to stop and sit by the river to watch the rafters and kayakers. Enjoyed some cold beer and talked with some nice people who were doing the same. There is an outdoor sports center, general store, restaurant and bar here, with gorgeous views.

Super fun and felt safe. Great outing with my cousin. Enjoyed a great guide, Big Joe. Beautiful river. I live locally and had a blast going a few miles to experience the guided trip.

Do you bus back after rafting or end at the center?
Kathy B

You bus from the center up river. Then land back at the center. Very easy and plenty of parking with changing rooms and restrooms. Restaurants or picnic area at center.

Hi - my husband and I are planning to do the level 3 white water rafting trip. Wondering what we can/should we take with us on the raft... water bottle? cell phone in a waterproof bag? dry bag? Thanks!

I am taking staying in a cabin mid September in Bryson City and want to add white water rafting as part of my To Do List. My question is, the pictures I have seen online seem to families and groups of friends together on one large raft. I would be coming alone and want to know if anyone comes solo? If people do come solo, are you required to raft alone?
Also, do they rent lockers for customers to use to keep their belongings in such as keys, etc. while they are taking part in activities?

They will put you in a boat with others do not worry. Also they will safely hold your keys.
They are all about fun, safety and convenience

We did the 3pm. Water is very cold so the heat of the day might be best.
what are the time frame available for zip lining, going to be there December 14th and 15th. Is there a weight limit for zip lining? what are the prices?

Asheville, NC4 contributions
Hey Kimberly --
For our Mountain Top Zip Line Tour, the acceptable weight range is between 100 - 250 pounds.
Typically we are not running trips in December (due to the weather), although in a particularly nice year we may offer our zip lines at this time. Never hurts to ask :). If you are able to make it earlier in the season, I would highly recommend mid-October. The foliage is AMAZING.
How do I get more information on kayaking, pricing, and reservations?

Mountain top zipline- is pre-booking required or can we just show up? Looking at the last Sunday in Oct (the 29th). Thanks.

Hey @jboring12 -- I would definitely pre-book our Mountaintop Zipline trip, especially in the fall. If it is just 2 people you may be able to get a last minute booking, but you risk running into no availability.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!

I stayed in cashiers at High Hampton Inn, but that is about an hour away from NOC. I'm not sure about any other places to stay.
