The true merit of RagApple Lassie may be lost to many, it is easy to get lost with the hand painted bottles and the diversity of their wines! One conversation with either of the owners ( I was lucky to meet them both) will reveal to you two very important points: 1. They were one of the FIRST wineries in the coveted Yadkin Valley AVA; 2.) They are one of only two wineries in NC owned and operated by legitimate bonafide FARMERS and have went to great lengths to maintain the farm decor and ambiance as opposed to making it look more european. At a time when virtually no one wants to till the land they are a true throwback to a kindler gentler time! To have engaged the owner in a brief history of the development of this winery was priceless.

Tastings were generous. We love the wine and bought a case,
It was close to The Rockford B&B where we were staying.
Made an instant connection with Lenna Hobson. We had a wonderful chat. The Hobson's are very knowledgeable.

One of the wonderful (and convenient) aspects about visiting the Yadkin Valley region (Piedmont) of North Carolina is the high numbers of superb wineries that are packed within that area (over 45 as of this writing). As a result, if you plan your trip(s) right, you can wind up visiting many of these all in one day, or a weekend.

One of these wineries that has caused us to return each and every time we visit the Yadkin region is the RagApple Lassie Vineyards, located in Boonville, NC. Now you must take note because if you're first looking for the place, other than the vineyards - which give away it's location - there's nothing out of the ordinary that would make you think you were near a winery. In fact, the winery building looks like a dairy farm structure - that is, a gray metal building. But if you stop and drive into the parking lot, you will see a unique welded metal statute of a cow holding a wine glass, and outdoor seating area and more. That's when you realize that you've stumbled on to an unusual scenario - but one that will have you drawn to it each and every time you visit (well, for us it did).

OK, so now you're asking, "what's with the name RagApple Lassie?" Well, I can't blame you for thinking that. Prior to becoming a winery this family-owned farm was a dairy operation and one of their prized (years ago) award-winning cows was named RagApple Lassie. She was a beloved heffer and when they elected to transition to wine crops and winery, they decided that the winery should be named after her - RagApple Lassie! Even their bottles are pleasantly designed to include the painting of a cow. It's really cute.

Once you enter the front door of the building, you look down on to the massive Chrome Lined Wine Storage vats. You then take the stairs down and towards to the back is the wine tasting area - a intentionally darkened area that also houses a gift area and plenty of wines. To the left of the winery (as you're facing it) is a large outdoor covered picnic shelter, the vineyards are to the left of that, and in the distance, sticking out predominantly is Pilot Mountain, which is a unique landmark in this neck of the woods.

They use several folks to conduct the wine tastings, but two of the times we went, there was this gentleman - gosh, he must stand 6'7" or tigher - and he was the most delightful chap who had a wealth of knowledge about the RagApple Lassie wines and what foods to pair them with. His warm, southern drawl was intoxicating to say the least and he had the most disarming, wonderful personality...making it all worth the tasting. See one of the photos I've uploaded and you can see him standing behind the counter with two ladies as he instructs them about different foods that pair well with different wines. If you get this guy, you'll have a blast! When he is standing behind the counter, he looks 7' tall.

OK - none of this would matter if the wines were just so-so. But fortunately, not only are the wines superb (well, most of them are - after all, we all have our tastes and preferences), but their bottles are the most uniquely designed that I've seen among any wine maker. In fact, their bottles are so unique that you'll wind up wanting to keep them just for a souvenir (once you're finished drinking the wine, that is). Of course, if you return the bottle(s) on your next trip, I think they give you .75 cents or so for the return. But yes, the bottles alone will have you shaking your heads with delight.

Most of their wines are of the dry European and French/American variety, but they also have some sweet and semi-sweet varieties. So most folks will find something to like.

The best way I can describe this place is that it's well, errrr......sort of enchanting, if that's the right way to describe this place. We spent a good 2 hours there. But keep in mind that just like other wineries, the RagApple Lassie Vineyards conducts a variety of activities throughout the year with concerts, dances, etc. So check out their website when you get a chance.

Once your finished there, just right down the road (approx. 2 miles or so), you will find the superb Sanders Ridge Winery which features a 4-5 star restaurant (inside a hand-constructed boast and beam mountain type of lodge) also - all with superb views, an outstanding mountain-like setting, pond, gazebo, nature trails, zip-line, and more. So hitting both of these wineries one after another will make your day. See my separate review and photos on the Sanders Ridge Winery on Trip Advisor.

I've uploaded some photos for you to get an idea as to the ambiance and design of the RagApple Lassie Vineyards.

This winery has redone their tasting room and it is great. Nice and open, plenty of room for a large crowd and nice wines. Their white blend paired well with the slider and tasted great. The name comes from a family cow, yes cow, and it is a fun story that they play the decor with nicely. Good stop, friendly staff make this a good stop for a glass or tasting.

Our club had the most chill out time here. We were met by Buddy the dog and it just got better after that. We sat and enjoyed their wines and shared our snacks. It is such a comforting environment and you need to ask about the history. I won’t share that. Ask about the name. They are the best hosts. Thanks to all.

This is family operated and owned. Very nice folks. First met owners Frank and Lena at Great Grapes in Charlotte, SouthPark years ago. Nice selection of wine, southern hospitality at its best. Staff make you feel right at home. Special events are planned throughout year on property. We also scheduled a hot air balloon ride from there a couple years ago. Amazing views over pastures, winery and Yadkin River. This winery is located in Yadkin Valley region.

We had a bus of 38 people celebrating the organizers birthday. The owners were very friendly and were wonderful hosts. Told us some fun stories while informing us of the history of the property and business. Make this a stop if you are trouncing around wine country in NC.
