Only a short ride up Howard's Knob and you can take in all of Boone. Beautiful view on a great weather dayh! Also a great place to take a picnic! Don't expect to do much hiking up there as we could not find any trails to hike. If limited on time though, a must-see!

Not far from town you can drive up to the overlook at Howard's Knob. Our directions told us to turn beside Earthfare onto Cherry St. and follow signs up to the overlook. We never saw any signs but we managed to find the park. You just keep going up and up until you find Howard's Knob Rd. The park closes at 7:30 pm. It is free to access. There is a small parking lot with a porta potty and lots of picnic tables around. We even saw deer on the drive up. There is a short trial with some rocks to climb over at the end. This is a small fence from which to overlook. There are some overgrown trees blocking part of the view, but you can still see great views of the town and the ASU campus and mountains in the background.

Would've been nice to know it's closed until further notice. Wasn't posted on the website so we drove all the way up until the gate, where there wasn't even a turnaround location. So that was fun.

We were rather disappointed after visiting Howard's Knob. We thought maybe there was more to it since it was so small (like a mini park with only 10 parking spaces). After talking with a local Boone resident, she said that's all it is. Literally it's a walk in, then walk back out deal. There is an amazing view of the town of Boone, but that's about it. We saw some local college kids there reading books on a huge boulder, and I'm sure it's a nice quiet place to do that, but really nothing else. I would say it's not really worth the time, and drive (it's kind of a steep and curvy drive) to get there. The Boone resident told us they used to have a large windmill up there to see, but they had to remove it because other Boone residents were complaining about the "wooshing" sounds it made in the wind bothered people. The windmill was relocated to a different part of Boone.

This is the best view of Boone NC you can get. It is very impressive. One person before me said she was disappointed. Well if the highest peak in Boone overlooking ASU, Boone, and 100 miles of mountaintops are not your thing I guess you would be disappointed.
Every time I visit Boone this is one of my first stops, assuming there isn't heavy fog. If there is heavy fog, forget about it. You simply drive to the top and walk to get the view. The walk is about 1 minute. There is not anything else to do up there; I could spend 30 minutes looking out at everything (I usually do). I have been here 15 times and I can't wait to go back. Neat, quick, free, mandatory stop if you are in Boone.

Nice place for a picnic. The park closes during the winter season due to ice, snow, and temperature. The parking is sometimes crowded. A short walk from parking lot to outlooks.

Nice park but views are partially overgrown by trees. We were staying at a cabin on that same mountain so it was easy to get to. It was hard to tell where the path was and where you should go. We ended up finding the views near the back of the park.

Howard's Knob has a great view of Boone and the surrounding area. To get the full effect of the beauty, it takes a little climbing over and around rocks....please take care in getting down to the overlook...not really kid or senior citizen friendly without a lot of assistance and monitoring. Once safely there, the view is breath-taking. It is also a litt

Really great view of the city below after a short & easy walk. A few picnic tables but rather small park. They close the gates @ 7:30 PM which seems early.
