We walked through, then read the brochure, then bought the book. Will visit again when we come back to Beaufort.

I downloaded the tour to my phone and was able to read a little about each identified grave site. The area is dark and potentially moist. It is best to wear closed shoes in order to prevent getting pathway grit in sandals. I spent about 40 minutes there. Numerous sites had no markers, and some sites which had markers did not have descriptions in the guide. Left some questions in my mind, but I would guess that if there was no written history available to use as a resource the questions will remain unanswered. So many graves of children and young adults led me to consider that diseases that had no known causes and no known cures were a big problem. Living near a water body and mosquitos carrying Yellow Fever probably caused many to sicken and die. Young mothers died of birth complications. Interesting to note some large memorials that had been provided by wealthy families, but there was no explanation of their importance in the scheme of the town.

Very interesting and unique stop. We got the self guided tour brochure at the visitors center and the cemetery was a short walk away. Some great stories about the people buried there.

I'm not really into graveyards, but the history lesson that came with this one made the stop worthwhile. There is a handy phone app that explains the numbered markers on some of the graves and gives fascinating details about this 300-year-old graveyard.
