The days when a library just lent books are over! Patterson is a library, community center and multi-tasking museum and exhibition space meant for everyone. The children's room downstairs is bright and cheerful -- and has a child-sized wooden train and car for kids to pedal around picking out books and putting them in the car for check-out. Stuffed birds and animals adorn the adult book shelves upstairs and the reading rooms on the main floor. There are also 19th C oil portraits of library benefactors and local notables, as well as an ecletic collection of landscape paintings (don't miss the unframed Turgood) -- not to mention the superlative collection of WW I posters and the exhibition (and meeting) space downstairs. Both reading rooms are computer ready -- one for your own laptop, the other providing terminals where you can print documents (15cents/page). Plus one of the lady librarians is an IT wizzard (not that she'll admit it). Patterson even sponsors recitals from time to time. It's like, Wow! there's nothing these folks won't do. Why a couple of years ago they even had a selection of special cake pans to lend! Absolutely brilliant idea!
Even if you don't want to check out a book go check out Patterson Library. It's definitely worth a visit to see what a library today does -- and how. Long live Patterson Library!

An Ol' Town's Reading Haven

Across from the downtown center's park is this library. The outside is from a by-gone era, as well as the inside. Nevertheless, there is plenty of room, within, to showcase all there is needed to accommodate the local need to read.

Seashells, Birds and Books

It may fool you from the outside ("just another old building") but step inside and prepare to be amazed. A seashell collection like nothing you've ever seen, displays of stuffed birds (including a passenger pigeon), World War I posters and more await you. And, oh yes...it isn't a museum; it's an operating library! Well worth the visit.

Large!
Aug 2018 • Couples
What a wonderful place. We thought is was a converted bank, but learned it was built as a library. Very large, has an addition and lower lever full of exhibits including rare birds. Reading areas for adults and children. Worth a visit!

A beautiful and historic village library
Jun 2018 • Couples
The architecture of this library is truly worth stopping in to see. It is one of the finest in the county. Lots of history here and built by the Patterson family. Westfield is lucky to have this historic structure. An art gallery is in the lower level and holds many shows. Check out the garden out back during summer months. Bring a picnic and get a chance to relax. Tables and benches are there for your enjoyment.

The library of my youth

I have loved this library since I was a child. It reminds me of Jefferson's Monticello. This architectural beauty is exquisite and a lovely place to visit

The Gallery is a gem!
Nov 2017
We come here fairly frequently for a variety of services. We've taken out books, videos and purchased used books. However we come mostly for the gallery which shows local artists and special programs. This past year we have taken art courses on drawing, painting, and drawing (with a different artist). The library really goes out of its way to offer many programs (more so that any library in the area). And if you're driving by, you need to stop and check out the gallery.

Wonderful private library
Jul 2017
I've been coming here every summer for almost my entire life. My children have gone through the summer reading program here. I always find something I want to read and love the art exhibits in the Octagonal Gallery. The staff is great, the decor beautiful. Lovely old library with a wonderful newer children's section.
