Located in the spectacular Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, just 45 minutes south of Perth is Penguin Island- a beautiful, unspoilt nature reserve home to WA's largest colony of little penguin as well as dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans, ospreys and more. Visitors can see the penguins being fed by rangers at the Discovery Centre. It's also fantastic for swimming, snorkelling, having a picnic or just enjoying some of the best coastal scenery in Perth. Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island (it's only a 5 minute ride), glass bottom boat cruises of Shoalwater Bay and adventure style cruises to watch the local dolphins and explore more of the marine park. Sea Kayak Tours and Kite boarding Lessons are also available.

We went across on ferry saw some dolphins which was good but not that impressed with island as we saw foot prints but no penguins if going and want to see penguins you have to pay for discovery Centre but it would be no different to seeing them in captivity at a zoo/aquarium so I don't think the value is... Hi Troy D, Thank you for your review, That is great you were lucky to see Dolphins just by catching the ferry! The 10 little Penguins inside the Discovery Center have either been injured or orphaned as chicks and are not suitable for release in the wild as they would not survive. This is where you are guaranteed to sight... More

Not much to do on the island once you've seen the feeding, must take own food, didn't see any wild penguins, only the captive ones, nice to walk around the island, people swim on the beach on oneside & snorkel & paddle board on the other, there is a toilet

Hi Rosalie R, Thank you for leaving a review, Penguin Island is a nature reserve and is home to approximately 1200 little wild Penguins. The natural behavior for a wild Penguin is to fish and hunt in the ocean during the day or either tucked away in their burrows as they are naturally shy and most vulnerable to predators such... I had such a glorious time on this island. I didn't see any wild penguins but I wasn't expecting to. I did, however see amazing pelicans, cormorants, pigeons, little sea birds, rocky caves and penguin burrows. If you listen carefully and don't tell or run you can probably hear them- I heard a few and found a burrow where I... More

Recently stayed in Rockingham and was excited to visit Penguin Island for the first time on the ferry. Lovely little island, but not a Penguin in sight 😔 Had to see them in the Rescue centre. Great job the guys are doing in. Hopefully might see them next time in their own habitat.

I've visited a few times and it's always been enjoyable. The rescued penguins are certainly worth visiting. The island itself is lovely to walk around as well.

We caught the normal ferry - best value for an exploratory visit! Gran, mum and 2 kids under 4. The lovely sunny day lifted our spirits and the layout and facilities were terrific. 4 y.o. was difficult to coax from the Discovery Room where, although it was not feeding time, there were about 10 penguins splashing and swimming and puddling... As an overseas visitor (U.K.) to Perth, Australia, relatives suggested Penguin Island as a good place to visit with two young children (ages 8 and 5). Staff were friendly and informative and I concur with the positive reviews already shared. My children enjoyed the visit and wanted to stay longer. Unfortunately couldn't, due to the 4pm ferry return time. Did... More
