On the way down from Perth whille on a 6 day tour of the extreme Southwest of Australia, or friends from Perth said "we must stop here, we recommendit to ALL our friends!" We did some tasting of reds and whites, they were all so very good it was difficult to choose only six - space in the car, etc . . . Lovely wines, and a lovely wine tasting experience. I won't recommend a wine, because wine is such a ppersonel thing. However, I would strongly recommend you visit Plantagenet Wines; you WILL find the wine you like!!

We visited Plantagenet winery and there were quite a few people wine tasting. The Lady (I presume, the owner), asked us to be seated as we indicated that we wanted to not only partake in the wine tasting but also lunch. She was apologetic for the wait and suggested we look at the menu. She then directed us to the counter for wine tasting. The staff is so courteous and the smoked chicken pizza was scrumptious! The lady even offered us free beverages for the wait and apologized again. It was not that long a wait but after driving all those hour from Perth, it was a lovely experience to be treated so well. We highly recommend this place for the wines and lunch.

The Plantagenet winery and restaurant is in the centre of town, and not out among the vineyards as you might expect. The sales attendant told us this was because the winery draws its grapes from all over the Mt Barker district, to maximise the quality of its fruit. Climatic/soil conditions that are perfect for one grape type may be less than ideal for another variety. Our host was very knowledgeable and took us through their full list of tasting wines. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and we left with a good supply. .

I had seen these wines around a number of times over the years but hadn't appreciated that they came from Mount Barker. Accordingly when we saw the sign to the cellar door I was keen to stop, have a look and a taste.
Cellar door is very rustic having been made of mud bricks and timber. It opened in 1975 and was formerly an apple packing shed.
Tastings were free and we were able to enjoy some of the wines on offer from the winery's large range that included a sparkling, a rose, sauvignon blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Malbec and shiraz. We enjoyed the Pinot Noir and the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Unfortunately the elder lady staff member, who appeared to be the only one there, although very pleasant, was unable to answer most of our questions and just handed us the book that had the tasting notes inside.
We purchased a couple of bottles of the Pinot Noir and continued on our way.

Visited the cellar door today. We sampled some wines. We chose the rose we tasted to have with our platter for two for lunch. The platter was superb with lovely fresh cheeses, meat, olives, bread all sourced locally. House made condiments and crackers. Great service and delicious food and wines. In town so an easy walk and no worries on driving. Recommend this place.

Stopped in for lunch and it was quite busy. Sat outside and was lovely, even though it was a hot day. Great little playground for kids. Did tastings while they cooked our meal-very decent sized pizza & salad. Very friendly staff.

Great winery. Enjoyed lots of tastings from the friendly staff. Sat inside and had a delicious lunch. Fantastic platters and daily special. Lovely outside alfresco area for warmer days.

A wonderfully warm welcome from Joel who shared the history of Plantagenet before our wine tasting. Truly knowledgeable!
The region and winery are best known for Riesling and we weren't disappointed - three great rieslings on offer. My favourite was the 2022 Three Lions Riesling with a delicious passionfruit taste. My husband loved the 2021 Wyjup Collection Riesling.
We also tasted the 2018 Plantagenet Lancaster Shiraz and 2018 Wyjup Collection Shiraz - both great wines.

Reasonably good wines at upper mid range prices.
However, as I discovered after overhearing a brief whispered conversation at the end of the bar, if one was a 'local', one would get a SUBSTANTIAL discount. This discount obviously subsidised by unsuspecting out of town visitors!!!
No more buying local wines locally for me, thank you

we called ahead and asked if they could feed us at 2.30pm on a Sunday afternoon after a long trek up Bluff Knoll and they were very obliging. We were tired and sore and enjoyed a most scrumptious lunch and some lovely wine. Great service and great food, would recommend and would revisit.
