Well cared for cemetarythat is worth a visit
The cemetery is well worth a stroll around to visit the graves of Ben Hall, Rebecca Sheilds & Kate Kelly . Other prominent citizens of years long ago are also found here and if you collect a brochure from the Information Centre in town you can wander around and learn about these folk. It's great for kids to visit ( we did a lot when the kids were younger) as it creates a greater awareness of how lives were hundreds of years ago...often with children dying in infancy or adults succumbing to an early death . Science has come a long way . The grounds were being maintained at the time of our visit which was lovley to see.

    Historical and Tidy Graveyard!
The graveyard is very large and well kept. We met one of the friendly volunteers, Uncle Ronny Morris. He shared a few stories from the graveyard as well as some fun stories from his younger years in Forbes. Contrary to a few other reviews, the 3 notable graves were very easy to find with signposts throughout the graveyard. The graveyard will naturally mean more to historically minded people so doing some basic reading of Ben Hall, Kate Foster nee Kelly, and Rebecca Shield will make the trip more worthwhile. An easy historical highlight that can be checked out quickly if you are interested.

    Something you don't see everyday
I was in Forbes for business and at the end of my work day decided to explore. So headed off on Bogan Gate Road ( which in itself amused me ) and just a short distance down the road there it was - the Forbes cemetery. The timing of my visit was pretty special, after work and on dusk - not a feat I would usually venture out on my own. So there I was at dusk face to face with some absolute legends of Australian history and set beautifully by the quickly dropping sun There is another feature of this cemetery that is quite unique - at least in my experience anyway. Many of the graves have solar panels with lights attached!!!! No spotlight games around tombstones happening here. There is a vivid light show going on 365 days of the year Worth the visit

Came to the cemetery as I like to read the old graves but Forbes is special as Bushranger Ben Hall lies here. was pleasantly surprised that also his gang and family are scattered around the site, bit of a treasure hunt as many are no longer marked, speculation arises that as they were bushrangers and good Christians would have objected to them being buried on consecrated ground and their real location may be outside the cemetery boundaries this however is not proven fact. Also buried in the cemetery is 'Kate Kelly' relative of Ned Kelly, his younger sister moved into the region from Victoria however drowned in 1896, plus also the great grand nice of Captain James Cook 'Rebecca Shield' is buried in Forbes Cemetery all well marked and sign posted to find easily.

The cemetery is located on the West side of Forbes some one kilometre along the Bogan Gate Road (not Boagan Gate Road as indicated on the TripAdvisor website). It is nicely maintained and contains the grave of local infamous bushranger, Ben Hall, Ned Kelly's sister Kate and Captain Cook's grand niece Rebecca Shield.

Very interesting see where the graves of Ben Hall & Kate Forster (Ned Kelly's sister) are. Also just walking around the other graves was very informative.

When in Forbes you should visit the cemetery and find the grave of the (in) famous local son, Ben Hall. Arguments persist until today about how the bushranger Ben was shot back in 1865 - it is a fascinating story that you can follow up at the local museum in Cross St.

With the mystery that enshrouds Ned Kelly... many of us have heard his story and know some of the key players in his life. We have all heard of Kate, his sister, but what became of Kate. She married William Foster and he was abusive towards her by all accounts and bought to account for being so.

On the 5 October, 1898, Kelly visited a neighbour, asking her to write a message for her, and look after the children, including Catherine. (Catherine was a newborn that died weeks later)The next day Kelly was reported missing, and her body was found eight days later in a lagoon on Condobolin Road near Forbes. They could not determine any signs of violence as the body had been in water for eight days... but in modern times this would have been investigated more thoroughly.

She died in 1898 at the age of 35.

But also in this cemetery is a bushranger more well known to the locals than Ned. Here lies Ben Hall about forty metres away from Kate. Ben started out with parents that were both ex-convicts...but he aspired for more and became a stockman. He even leased a run with another man. On 29 February 1856 at Bathurst he married according to Roman Catholic rites Bridget Walsh of Wheogo.

But things changed for Ben at some point... his wife left him with their son and ...he became a bushranger. It didn't end well for him either, as he was shot dead by police at the age of 27. His funeral was well attended because to spite his choice to be a bushranger... he was always polite to women, he was recklessly courageous and had a great sense of humour.

These are some of the famous inhabitants of this cemetery, but there are many old graves and it is interesting to spend time here.

A very neat country cemetery which includes several interesting graves from the bush ranging days. A large display board at the entrance makes navigating the grave sites easy.

A must-stop for history lovers with the likes of Ben Hall, Rebecca Sheilds & Kate Kelly buried here. Lots of other well-known local graves to find the with the cemetery walk. Just in general is a lovely cemetery to stroll around, particularly if you’re looking for family members & ancestors.
