Easy to reach barracks entrance
Jun 2021
Once we'd finally got off the ship we headed to the Garrison Fort, purley because it was the only landmark I could see. That took a couple of minutes walk up the hill and there wasn't really much there, certainly nothing open. We continued on up the hill to the Star Fort, now a hotel but built in the late sixteenth century as a gun fort to repel a potential second Armada. There were various other batteries along the coastline but we didn't have time to see them.
We walked back down the hill, briefly pausing at the Higher Battery that was built to defend the harbour entrance before meandering through the little streets of the town and along a couple of beaches.

Historic fortified gate in Hugh Town
Oct 2020 • Friends
Garrison Gate is located on the western edge of Hugh Town at the start of the Garrison Walls on the Headland. The fortified gate was built along with the other defences including the original defence walls and fortifications before the rest of the headland was surrounded by Garrison Walls. Garrison Gate is easily accessible from Hugh Town and is worth visiting along with the other preserved fortifications on the Headland.

Gorgeous
Nov 2019
Essential to visit, even if you skimp a bit on doing the full circuit. Small exhibitions, and labelled buildings.

Iconic View
Sep 2019
Climb the short steep hill up to Garrison Gate and take photos of the harbour though the gate from the other side. One of Scilly's iconic views. Then circumnavigate the garrison (a gentle stroll in well under an hour with wonderful views) and arrive back where you started. Just perfect!

Along with other historic walls, buildings etc, this old garrison gate, along a well trod walk gives a lovely warm nostalgic feel to the area.

Entrance to the Garrison
May 2019 • Friends
Just beyond the gate is the Powder Room with its small but informative history of the development of the Garrison. Well worth visiting before walking the Garrison walls

Excellent

This was a great place to visit as part of our sightseeing visit to the island. This is free and has some basic information. As well as a detention cell to view.
