We spotted the castle from the highway and went exploring to find it. It's stunning. Initially built in the 12th century, it later became a prison (1564 to 1792) and one of it's most infamous prisoners was the Marquis de Sade. There are 12 different areas used as prisons between the dungeon and the Saint-Pierre tower and they have very self-explanatory names that reflect the living conditions such as trésor enfer (Hell) and purgatoire (At least the prisoners had remarkable views!).
I would recommend that you read some of the history as it's very interesting and you'll appreciate the visit even more.
The current owners put the COVID shut-down to good use and did some upgrades, improved the gardens, and prepared for social distancing. When we visited there were only two other people on the property, so not an issue, but it's good that they're ready for business with safety as a first priority.

Actually stopped off to see the Castle as we were doing a wine tour of the area and were so intrigued by it's beauty from the road that we had to see if for ourselves. The road leading up to it is a typical European 1 1/2 width road but full of twists and turns. The Castle is very interesting and even includes walls that seem to have been left from Roman origin. It has amazing views at the top, a fabulous garden and even a guide book with english translations. The chateau was used as a prison also and housed Marquis De Sade who escaped 4 months after arrival. Be sure to wear sure-fitted shoes and take the your camera for amazing views of it and the Mont Blanc mountain in the background.

Some of the castle is in ruins while other parts are in good condition. Maybe it is still in the process of restoration. Nevertheless, this is a marvelous place to explore. The view from the tower is breath-taking. You can also see the remains of an actual draw-bridge. Earliest parts of the structure date from the 3rd century. This place is really old but still an interesting niche in history. Absolutely worth the diversion from the main road to visit. Caution: elderly visitors may find the going difficult, especially if they have knee or balance problems.

It was tucked out of the way, not too crowded, and is in great condition. I enjoyed to flower garden. The woman at the front was very helpful and gave me the English version of the history to take as I explored the grounds.

The castle is interesting piece of history which contains the cells where Marquis de Sade was imprisoned and the garden has varieties of species of herbs including poison plants black-magician used. What I liked most was the quiz game and the staffs in century old attires/outfits and Knight's uniform. It was a mesmerizing trip!

A little over an hour's walk from lac du carouge (or 15 mins in the car) is the delightful miolans fortress. Beautifully preserved with welcoming helpful staff, an English booklet of interpretive material, a gorgeous cottage garden growing fruit and veg and of course views to die for.
Well worth a visit.

If you don't know what to do during holidays or week end, the Fortress of Miolans is the best place, you have to visit. Her history is more millennial, the site was already occupied by the Romans then the Saracens ! Lose yourself in a deep Middle Age, at the eleventh century, and come to the guided tour, to discover the cruel lord secrets, the savoy families mysteries and the ruthless battles between the House of Savoy and the French king at the sixteenth century. If a part of you was kept into your youth, you will love this place.

For family, couples, friends or just anyone, I sincerely recommend this place where a lot of peoples were imprisoned. More, the view from the fortress's ramparts on Belledone mountains is amazing ! Enjoy your visit !

Come between march to November, the fortress is always amazing.

Detoured on our cycling trip up the steep climb (2 kms at 10%) but it was worth it. Impeccable views of the valley, and interesting historical perspective. If you like castles and dungeons, then you will like this. 10 euros per head or 8 euros if in a group. English language guidebooks available.

Totally fascinating castle in a stunning but fairly unknown part of Savoie. The garden is magical and down in the dungeon where the Marquis De Sade was imprisoned there is still graffiti carved onto the walls. Great view of Mont Blanc from the tower.
