The beauties of the D81 road are usually associated with the Calanques of Piano. Undoubtedly, these rocks are impressive, but this is not the only advantage of this road. The D81 starts in Ajaccio and ends in the north in Calvi. I have not traveled from the Gulf of Girolata to Calvi, but judging by the map there is a serpentine and it is also beautiful. I watched the road from the bus window from Ajaccio to Porto and back. And I was happy that I wasn't in the driver's seat. His skill amazed me no less than the surrounding beauty. Driving a bus in such a serpentine requires strong nerves, composure and skill. I took a moped to Porto and tried myself as a driver on the road from Porto Ota to the Gulf of Girolata and back. Despite the speed of 30-40 km/h, it was scary in places! The road is laid along the traverse of the mountains. On one side of the mountain, on the other a cliff into the sea. Impressive. Lucky with the weather. The sun and a light breeze. With a strong wind, it would be scarier and less fun. In short, we must try! No photos and descriptions will replace the live experience.

This is an amazing route going from Calvi to Ajaccio. The route is quite narrow and it’s necessary to drive carefully and slow, what is not a sacrifice at all, since the views are so astonishing, that you really want to keep that experience as much you can.

This is a wonderful 3 km drive through the red rocks called Les Calanche. The drive is beautiful, some of the best views on the island. There is a nice little cafe on the north end. But beware, there are huge tour buses that come on this road and they are extremely dangerous. You can hear them blaring their horn as they round every sharp corner. But don't let this deter you, it's a great experience here.

Drove along this road, while relocating from Calvi to Ajacco. The views are breathtaking, but the road is really very narrow. There are some wider spots for taking pictures, but not enough of them taking into account the number of cars passing here in high season. The major problem is that the traffic here is open for full-size touristic buses. If such a bus encounters a trailer, coming from the opposite direction, you can be stuck... So my advice is to allow more time on this route. The car navigators are always too optimistic.

Well I was warned but wanted to drive this road to Porto Ota. amazing views of coast and mountains but in a rather large hire car that I wasnt used to on narrow roads was heart pounding. I naively then took the D84 from Porto over the mountains back to Bastia and that was worse plus it started to get misty with rain in these high mountains. Now I love riding a motorcycle along fast mountain roads with little or no traffic but both roads arent designed for that as the surface isnt good enough plus they are far too narrow with many blind bends so if your thinking for riding these roads expect to do it slowly and take in the stunning views. Watch out for the wild pigs standing in the middle of the road as you come around a blind bend, they were everywhere on the D84.

Loved the drive from Calvi to Piana. The scenery is pretty for most of the drive. There are cows and goats wandering around. The vistas are lovely. Then you get close to Porto and Piana and the views are jaw-dropping! There are plenty of pull-offs for photo opportunities. It is not congested like the Amalfi coast, but that be the time of year we are here. You do not tire if the views! An absolute must do in Corsica!!

The view of the calanches are magnificent along D81 after you past Piana if you are coming from Ajaccio. It is about 10 to 15 minutes away. Many tour buses and cars stop along the way to take in the view. It is breath taking. The drive is also a little unnerving because of the twists and turns of the road.

This, in my experience, is one of the great Coast road trips On earth. A small group of us I a small coach walked a few kilometres of this road to take in the fantastic views slowly, on foot.

What is the approx. ' driving time ' ( excluding stops ) on this route ?
Is Corsica a good place for someone fond of driving ? scenic routes, good roads, light traffic, police not paranoid about trapping motorists ( unlike in Mainland France ) going over the speed limit on an empty stretch ?

Average speed depends on time of the year(traffic). We were there in September. Traffic yams because of narrow roads and touring cars. Cruising speed 50 km/hr max.
Corsica is perfect for scenic driving but it takes more time to get from one place to another because of narrow winding roads.
