- 1234texasSeabrook, Texas2,446 contributionsNice, but....The city of St Emilion is really a wonderful stop. It has to be one of the best in the region--very historic and well preserved. Our guide pointed out this site as a way spend the few extra minutes we had for "being on our own." She may get a finders fee for directing visitors.... Anyway, this is a decent stop for some gift items to take home. The site is well designed, attractive and a good re-purposing of a historic building. There is a nice bar for a drink on the second floor.Visited January 2020Written January 6, 2020
- MaltruenoCroydon, United Kingdom295 contributionsAmazing place, tour not so muchThe place is an amazing blend of old and new. It's an old quarry with the ruins of a monastery above it. The monastery church is now the modern shop and tasting room with the wine cellars in the tunnels beneath. The cloisters outside are surrounded by a modern bar and an events area. The tour however was a farce. The tour guide just gathered everyone waiting at the shop without checking for tickets. We then realised that it was all in French so we spent the first part running back and forth to the busy shop trying to get the text with the tour in English. Because of this the tour guide chose to completely ignore us, all we got out of him was the wine tasting, he even forgot to give us the macaron he gave everyone else, we had to ask for it. Apart from not being able to understand much, reading a text while moving around and trying to observe your surroundings is not that easy, the tour in itself is not that great. All you get to see is a small area of the underground tunnels without anything of interest in it.. The best part was the tasting, but again we had to just sit there and listen to the guide making small talk with everyone else in French. Tour aside we enjoyed the place as much as possible, we had drinks at the bar, we bought wine, macarons and souvenirs at the shop. As a matter of fact everyone at the shop was very helpful and answered all the questions we had about everything including what we missed from the tour. .They even gave us padding for the wine bottle we bought to be able to travel with it without fear of breaking it.Visited July 2023Written July 30, 2023
- #rooftopfoodieZurich, Switzerland3,177 contributionsReal macarons and their own cremant to tryThis old Franciscan monastery is the perfect shaded spot to enjoy an aperitivo after walking to town from the train station. They have been producing their own sparkling wine, the Cremant in 17m deep aging cellars since centuries and they have certainly improved them to perfection in that time. And they also match beautifully with the original macarons that also origin from St Emilion, a simple but super tasty treat, a far cry from the overhyped, overdecorated Parisian version. The cafe/restaurant is self-service and joins a shop where all the above can also be purchased for home.Visited June 2022Traveled with friendsWritten June 28, 2022

This is small Cloitre and their grounds are very nice. I think the best part of the visit is to take a tour of the underground cellars which you enter thru the gift shop/ tasting room. They only run tours a few time a day so check the schedule. Its a good way to get a look at the underground tunnels that run below the city and learn how sparkling wine was (and still is) made here.

Browsing around Saint Emilion on a lovely warm day we fancied something light for lunch. Stumbled across this gem and what a treat it was. A picnic in the gardens.
Basically you choose from the menu what you would like for your picnic - it’s all presented to you in a fabulous wooden hamper complete with chopping board and knives. Glasses or bottles of sparkling wine or red wine served to accompany.
Then you take your picnic to the courtyard or gardens to picnic and while away the afternoon in the sunshine. Pure heaven.

Along with the production of excellent wine, Bordeaux makes a beautiful “crémant” so lovely place to visit and learn how it’s made and get a sense of the History of the village too. Beautifully restored with sensitivity too. The wine was splendid and the tasting at the end of the visit welcome

Beautiful old cloisters where you can sit outside with your own picnic bought onsite. Enjoyed lunch in the sunshine with beautiful cheese, pate and a chilled bottle of wine. Would definitely recommend if visiting Saint-Emilion.

We did the TucTuc Tour and it was really nice! We had a fantastic and enthusiastic tour guide named Angie. We recommend this tour for sure. We learned a lot about the village and the sparkling wine. A special thanks to Angie.

What an interesting place...full of history. Been making excellent sparkling wine there since 1800's. The temperature in underground cellar/storage is 10C lower than outside. Its amazing that the space was originally excavated to get the large blocks of stone to construct a lot of the buildings in St. Emilion

We took the (sparkling) wine tour here that was interesting with a tasting of 3 different sparkling wines at the end. The trip through the old cellars can be a bit chilly especially on a hot day so a wrap is a good thing to have with you.
There's a good shop with wine and other souvenirs. We brought a bottle of sparkling wine to take home for drinking later, but there were a number of people sitting around at small tables near the ruins and in the grassy area enjoying glasses of bubbly!
It's within easy walking distance of the main square and could be a little oasis on a hot day.

This former monastery and its ruins is magnificently situated next to the walls of the town. The remnants of its cloister gives the tiurist a hint of how life could have been in old times. Nice park and a shop nearby that sells the saint emilion only and most reouted sparkling wine. Worth the visit. It is free of charge.

This was part of our wander around the Village day. It is a beautiful site...especially on the outside. The most interesting part for me was the artwork inside. So many beautiful paintings for sale with artists onsite.
