This site is a series of man-made holes generally 1-2 meters in width and depth, forming a 20 meter-wide band which stretches ~ 2 km in length. The entire band snakes over the mountain tops and depressions and when viewed from the air looks like a undulating serpent. Though the holes can be viewed up close on the ground, you could only get the full panorama of the snake from the air. These interesting and enigmatic holes were discovered in the late 1940s and even today are still not that well known nor appreciated. People speculate that they were intended for, among other things, burials, storage or agriculture. It is also not known whether they were constructed by the Incas or an earlier civilization. They are located near the Pisco River valley, about 5km west of Tambo Colorado, near the village of Montesierpe on the Libertadores highway. The starting point for the holes could be reached by a 15 minute uphill walk from the village. A guide is definitely needed --- I had Lucio from South American's Secrets -- he was excellent. These holes are one of the many mysteries of Peru. If you are into archeology or ancient civilizations this sight should be on your list. It probably could be combined with a tour of Tambo Colorado.
