Tough mountain to climb best not to stay in the hut
Mar 2020
I didn't know Chile has so many rats! I will easily be contented to stay in tent. Stayed 5,500m and we summited Ojos starting 2am. There's a hut at 5,800+ but is dirty and scary. If you love rats, sure!

An absolut stunning experience

I have made the climb solo about 12 years ago in Feb 2006. Quite demanding and tough but if you have a good 4wheel doable in 3-4 days.I found it very very cold and got myself a frostbiten toe. But the scenery and the feeling of adventure are unsurpassed.

Absolutely Stunning
Nov 2016 • Solo
It took me a whole day for driving round-trip on a mostly dirt road to see this tallest volcano in the world. Beautiful view of Laguna Verde if going further. Be prepared for high altitude.

beautiful climb

great trip from copiapo; take your time to accimatize and have it organized through an agency arranging all the permits, transport and acclimatization climbs before .. visit laguna verde for a stop and overnight

Haunting volcano view at high altitude
Mar 2015 • Couples
We didn't climb Ojos del Salado but came up to the plain below the volcano to take in its stunning view, and the snow covered mountains in the distance from the old lava paths. We went to 5,200 meters above sea level and that was definitely enough in one day as the puna (altitude sickness) hits pretty hard at this level. Gorgeous view of the volcano and surrounding mountains though, quite worth the headache!

walking on the moon

the scenery there is totally moon like, the oxigen saturation of your blood is very low which make it difficult to think and you forget and leave behind all your everyday problems, the whole area is absolutely worth seeing, headache is 100% sure

Stunning location
Sep 2012
The highest active volcano in the world is located in a starkly beautiful and remote part of Chile. It's an action-packed (in terms of scenery) route from Copiapo just to get to the vicinity - up through the chasm after La Puerta, the Cuesta Codeceo, Salar Maricunga, Nevado Tres Cruces, grazing guanacos at las cascadas (I forget the proper name). Take your photos from the right location and you can compare your snaps with the photos NASA is getting back from Mars!

The view of the volcano from the University de Atacama refugio is one that I can watch for a long time (partly because I'm too unfit to even think about climbing it!).
