In June 2015, while hosting my international friend and touring the Finger Lakes, we planned to participate on a sail on the "True Love", the sail boat of Schooner Excursions in Watkins Glen. The wind was very light but we still had a great afternoon adventure, learning more about the "True Love"- her history and specifications. My friend, who had some sailing experience, was offer the opportunity to sit next to Captain James, and pilot the great little ship, made famous in the movie "High Society". (Here's a Youtube Clip of the great little ship in the movie : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ1ZLiyGrE0) So, you can sit in the same seat as did Bing and Grace. My friend had a great time, one that she won't ever forget.

Anyways, yesterday, July 9th, 2016, I took my husband on the sunset cruise. It was an impromptu decision. We had been doing a "staycation" and visiting some of the wonderful sights in the Finger Lakes (we are from the area, from Horseheads, NY), and I noted the number of small sailboats on Seneca Lake. The sky was blue, the puffy white clouds beautiful, and there was a very nice breeze. So I knew that a sail on the "True Love" would be perfect, and we were NOT disappointed. We signed up for the evening sunset cruise.

After the required safety review, the crew directed and assisted us onto the "True Love". My husband and I opted to sit near the front on the port side. Being a sunset cruise, I didn't want to be looking directly into the sun on the return, second half of the trip. The "True Love" sailed nearly straight north on Seneca Lake for about an hour and then turns around and tacks her way southward to the harbor. We had perfect wind conditions - just enough to make the trip exciting as the ship was heeling gently with the pull of the wind to the sails. The tacks and jibes was exciting as the lean changed from one side to the other, and the guests would giggle and hoot with excitement. There were plenty of opportunities for taking photos and selfies. The soft music was perfect. The evening cruise offers simple snacks of cheese, breads and fruit which were very tasty. Great horderves for a later dinner in town, if you wanted.

I am looking forward to my next trip on the "True Love". It's a great way to get out on the lake. Their website makes it easy for reservations, and you can always call, or just show up, as we did. You won't be disappointed.

Many thanks to the Captain and crew for the great July 9th Sunset Cruise! Very enjoyable.

We sailed with Captain Bill and his mates as well as the owner of Lakewood Vineyards (the featured winery) Liz Stamp for the Wine and Wind sail on Wed Aug 10th, 2022. It was an incredible night, the weather could not have been more perfect. Of course I realize not everyone gets ideal conditions. The cruise lasted 2 hours and we got to see the beauty of Seneca Lake up close and personal and see all of the beautiful geography surrounding the lake. We were at the back of the schooner I might suggest trying to sit up front to hear more of the dialogue from the Captain. The two mates were wonderful and friendly. Liz made the rounds with our wines. She is very personable. I believe we able to taste about 4 or 5 wines, nice pours for tasting ~ 2 oz, which were included in the price. They also included packets of cheese, crackers in the price of th ticket. After the tasting was over, you can purchase wines by the glass for a reasonable $7. The sunset that night was spectacular. I highly recommend this venue for people that want a more personable intimate experience. A total of 22 people permitted. And as I said you are right on the water, not enclosed on the inside of the boat of some of the other outiftters that travel the lake.

The captain and crew were wonderful. The trip was smooth and the scenery on the lake is beautiful, especially at sunset. The crew serve cocktails and cheese and cracker trays while you sail. The captain entertained us with stories of Seneca lake and sailing adventures he and the boat have had.

Beautiful Schooner providing a peaceful sale The Captain and crew were very knowledgeable of the local history if you ask.
This is not a necessarily a narrated sail, but if you chat with the captain and crew, they will be more than happy to discuss the history and trivial about the lake and local area. Great day trip with friends. They offer mimosa's, water and some soda for refreshments (we were on the AM sail).
Try to arrive about 10min early as a curtesy to be able to start the sail on time. We arrived right on time and they were nice enough to be waiting for us.
Highly recommend and I plan to do it again!

Quiet, peaceful. Very friendly crew. Soft conversation is possible the entire time because it's a quiet sailboat. Boat is beautiful. We loved it. It left on time and arrived on time. Cruise length is perfect. Use the bathroom before you go. (Handy public toilets are right there near the dock). We will do this again. It was just very nice. What a resource to have at Watkins Glenn on such a pretty lake.

Consider taking a sweatshirt, just in case. It was a scorching day, but the cruise leaves at 6:30 when temps start to drop. After the "golden hour" for photography as the sun sets, the lake becomes slightly cool. I was glad my wife had an extra sweatshirt.

We were lucky in that the wind was blowing the evening we took our cruise so we were able to enjoy sailing. It was beautiful and relaxing and great to see the lake and shoreline from the boat. We were staying in the house right above Painted Rocks and it was fun to see and learn about that history and see our house and deck from that viewpoint. I have attached pictures of the True Love as it cruised by our deck.

Wine (for a cost) and cheese, fresh bread, hummus and fresh fruit were served and hit the spot.

We asked many questions about the surroundings and the history of the ship and the staff was very knowledgeable and informative. We were lucky enough to have the owner on staff that night and it was awesome that she answered all or our questions and that she shared her story with us. My husband and I were very impressed with her.

This is a must "to do" on your itinerary if you are near Seneca lake.

Book ahead, you won't be disappointed. The entire crew is very nice and love to answer any questions you may have. They are definitely experts at sailing - we had an extremely windy and rough water day - they knew how to guide the schooner in this weather condition. Never felt queasy nor unsafe. A fun time was had by all!!!

What a wonderful way to spend the morning. The lake is beautiful, and the sail boat is magnificent. The captain and the crew were so friendly and had many stories to share about the lake and the region, including tips on which wineries they thought were worth visiting. It's not cheap (About $150 for a couple), but for us it was money well spent.

We sailed on a windy day with choppy waves. A few in our group initially were hesitant to board. The captain and crew respected our concerns and assured us that the sails are adjusted based on weather conditions and we could expect a smooth sail. They were right! True Love is is a grand, historic schooner, we admired the craftmanship. The captain is extremely knowledgeable and skilled. The captain and crew cheerfully addressed questions while providing interesting information about sailing, True Love, and lake Seneca. The member of our group who initially did not want to board face lit up when told she was sitting in the spot Grace Kelly sat in the film High Society.

The True Love staff are terrific - always welcoming and personable. We've cruised with both the former and current owners and always enjoy our experience. The crew is professional and informative as we enjoy the varied sunsets on Seneca. This is a standard entry on our vacation agenda when visiting Watkins Glen.
