- saltsy372North Port, Florida364 contributionsgreat place to visit when in ZanzibarGreat place to visit when in Zanzibar. Everyone on the planet knows who Freddie mercury was. Not everyone realizes he was born in Zanzibar. This is not the actual house he lived in, but being in Stone Town it is really easy to get to from anywhere. It is a bit of a lark, and not much new can be learned from the visit...but who doesn't like Queen music blasting out for an hour of wanderingVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 11, 2023
- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,343 contributionsThe birthplace of a starWhile we were walking in Stone Town we visited this place. The birthplace of a legend is very popular among tourists. If you like him, it’s a must see site. The house has a nice traditional wooden gate. Everybody wants to take photos in front of the house with the famous star. We did it, too.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2024
- Dilolwa165 contributionsMissableMy wife wanted to visit this museum so I went along with her. The staff were absolutely lovely but this was a forgettable experience for me. The museum has a handful of interesting photos of Freddy, some fascinating details about the Zoroastrian community he belonged to - only two remaining individuals on the island, oh, and his piano. It is not worth the money unless you’re a real fan. What really surprised me was how this exhibition had ‘sanitised’ his life perhaps to accommodate local cultural and religious sensibilities - no reference to what we knew and celebrated about him.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 13, 2024

While they have an OK collection of images of Freddy packed into a very small location I don’t feel it justifies the $10pp ticket price. We were in an out within 15 minutes.
No photography is allowed inside (perhaps so no one can share how small it is).
Overall nothing special.

This review is based on my own experiences and reflects my personal opinion.
The birthplace of the legendary frontman singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury. This is located in the city of Stone Town and has been converted/redesigned into a museum.
I typically split my review into categories, but this is not possible here.
Let's start with the fact that admission costs a hefty $10, which would be around €15. - Please keep this in mind.
Even so, as a hardcore fan, I had to go in here if I was standing in front of it and had the opportunity. - What awaited me then surpassed everything, and not in a positive way.
I assumed that everything there had been preserved as it was. That you would get an insight into how the family and Freddie lived there. This is not the case! You also cannot visit the entire apartment, just the ground floor, which is around 50 m2. The tour takes 2:50 minutes (measured with a stopwatch). All you can see there are walls with photos and trophies that Freddie Mercury collected over the years as a solo artist and as the frontman of Queen (nothing that you couldn't find or read on the internet). There is also a room with a giant poster and the "alleged" piano on which Freddie is said to have played "Bohemian Rhapsody". - However, this is highly doubtful. The only thing that might be interesting are some texts that are securely attached to the wall. These are handwritten. Apparently these are Freddie Mercury's initial notes when he was developing his lyrics.
In itself it is nicely done, but absolutely not what you would expect when you enter and want to visit Freddie Mercury's birthplace. Unfortunately, it is a "tourist rip-off" - I can't describe it any other way.
Therefore, I can only recommend that everyone not go in there and pay the $10. That money could be better invested elsewhere. Unless you are, like me, an absolute hardcore fan. Then you will go in, look at it and wash away the bad "rip-off" taste in your mouth with the fact that you have been to Freddie Mercury's birthplace.
Otherwise, my rating speaks for this museum, which cannot really be called a museum because it is not one in fact.
Nevertheless, have fun "traveling" and discovering. 🤙🏼

I was not coming here and expecting a massive multimedia experience like the Abba museum in Stockholm. But I have to admit it was a bit underwhelming with basically just one big room with photos and LP covers. Still I do not regret going to the museum, and then I’m not even a Queen fan. It was interesting reading the various accounts of Mercury’s childhood and school years by friends and family members.
I think the museum could be vastly improved if they got the opportunity to expand to the upper floor (where the Bulsara family actually lived) that are now occupied by the Tembo totel.

Freddy Mercury’s birth house in Stone Town, Nothing much to see here except the facade, Nice for photo memory
entry at $10 per person is expensive, Stay away from this place and keep your money.
you might as well stop and look at the faded pictures for a minute or two. But that's it.

The museum is set in the actual house that Freddie and his family lived, prior to their move to the UK. It covers Freddie's birth and early childhood in Zanzibar. Freddie's signature yellow jacket sits atop the piano.

Its a small room divided by temporary partition walls, it contains a few photographs, some quotes from Freddie, his family and friends, some hand written lyrics, album art, a piano and a TV playing Queen songs. From start to finish you can go around it in 5 to 10 minutes. For the price of admission, its just not worth it, even for die hard Freddie fans. The only thing that stopped me from giving it a terrible rating was the air con!!!

If you are a music fan, for only 8 USD you should not miss this small, but interesting museum. First, you can find a lot of pictures and useful information about local history. Than, plenty of artist's pictures, in Zanzibar or in India, from his childhood and first youth. Also, handwritten lyrics and pictures, the whole Queen discography exposed, some personal objects. And the music of the band as permanent sound. Great memory!

The exhibition actually only consists of two rooms, but it is still worth seeing. Especially when the daily rain shower is coming up, you can read everything in peace. Oh, and don't forget, Stone Town is F. M.'s birthplace. The entrance fee for adults is $10, children $6.

The museum barely educates and only shows some pictures, random quotes, and two reliques.
It's a big scam, paying 10$ (no local price in tanzanian shilling) for nothing.
The whole tour takes 10 minutes.
Avoid if you have any sense.

My husband and I went to the museum because we love Queen and Freddy Mercury and wanted to visit the museum and the house he lived in as a child.
The museum itself is great, has lots of pictures, handwritten songs and his costume that he wore on a tour.
The thing that bothered me is that there were two women museum workers who laughed and talked VERY LOUDLY. I had to read everything three times because of them, I could not hear my own thoughts.
It was horrible.
If you see a woman at the entrance door, turn around and come back another time. It will spoil your visit!

We are planning a visit in August 2022. Do we need a reservation? It’s a fully vaccinated family of 4 adults.

No reservations just pay on entry. It is only a small museum.

Hi, I just read your comment about Freddie Mercury's house in Zanzibar. I am in Zanzibar right now and am planning a visit to Stone Town. One of the things I wanted to do is to stop by this house and just take some pictures. You mentioned that he only lived here until the age of 8, but the history I've read says he fled Zanzibar with his family at the age of 17 when the revolution happened. So, was there another house in Zanzibar where he lived?

As I recall - the guide we had indicated Farouk (Freddie) went away to school - first in India, then in England - before his family finally fled Zanzibar.. ask your guide in Stone Town - they will know all the details.. have fun!
