I got a chance to visit this beautiful historic building but there were no live performances currently due to COVID-19 but I got a chance to tour the building. There were several performers practicing and classes going on at the time. Wonder building and staff.

Inside the beautiful building, in the patio, you will get to enjoy live music every night by 8pm.
Local young professional musicians will create a magic atmosphere were you will navigate, dance and feel Zanzibar's rhythms and melodies.
By enjoying this gigs in Stone Town you are actually supporting the NGO that runs this project: empowering youth through music in Zanzibar.
Personally, meeting the musicians was the best piece of my time in this island.
hugs!

My friend and I signed up for a traditional drumming workshop at the Dhow Countries Music Academy and it was a highlight of our visit to Zanzibar. We were the only two there, so it was basically a private lesson. Harry, the instructor, is an excellent teacher and so joyful. If we had more time, we would have booked a second session.

Exceptional place bursting with creativity, a must visit for those interested in music. Regular concerts on the top floor. High standard. We went to 2 concerts, Taraab and Swahili music, both were highlights of our trip. Love!

If you’re planning a trip to Zanzibar, do not miss a visit to the Dhow Countries Academy of Music in Stone Town. I’m a professional New York musician, and I was floored by the talent of the students, and the love and devotion of the staff. Truly an inspirational visit! From the moment you enter this ancient building, you’ll be enveloped in the magic that surrounds the space. Floating from the halls is beautiful music. The school keeps alive the traditional Zanzibarian Taarab music, and also encourages the students to explore other genres including the classics, Afro-pop, jazz and rock! You can experience this music yourself for a nominal fee (next to nothing!) by attending the weekly concerts at the Academy. Check their website for current listings. They also sponsor concerts in the square on Hurumzi Street, just west of the ‘Emerson on Hurumzi’ hotel, by traditional groups from surrounding villages. We were lucky enough to catch one of these concerts while we were in Stone Town. It was a great way to also spend some time with some actual Tanzanians who are some of the warmest, friendliest people you will ever meet. They also have a huge selection of local CD’s that you can purchase so that you can enjoy this musical experience once you get home. The Dhow Countries Music Academy should definitely be a “MUST SEE” on your list of things to do in Zanzibar!

We stumbled upon this coming from the ferry in Zanzibar, a huge blackboard outside the academy advertised taraab music that evening so we went along and for a few dollars you get an hour and a half of traditional Tanzanian music played by the students plus a touring dance and drum troop happened to be there when we went so we got to see them too! It's a cause worth supporting and wholly enjoyable too, something different to experience whilst in Zanzibar

We happened on the Music Academy as we were walking around, but it turned out to be one of those life nice surprises kind of thing. Everyone put on great performance, on a beautiful and relaxing evening.
Food was simple, but it was still a very enjoyable evening that they put together. If you like live music and checking out the local music, it is worth checking it out when you are in Stone Town.
