We stumbled upon this coming from the ferry in Zanzibar, a huge blackboard outside the academy advertised taraab music that evening so we went along and for a few dollars you get an hour and a half of traditional Tanzanian music played by the students plus a touring dance and drum troop happened to be there when we went so... We happened on the Music Academy as we were walking around, but it turned out to be one of those life nice surprises kind of thing. Everyone put on great performance, on a beautiful and relaxing evening. Food was simple, but it was still a very enjoyable evening that they put together. If you like live music and checking out... After walking through the narrow streets of stone town under the hot sun for two hours or more looking for a major attraction which at least 167 people had directed us to we came across a fellow 'Muzungo' (European) who had the air of an expat. We immediately blocked his path and demanded he explain the way to us using... More

What an excellent recital we heard, as the sun set over the Indian Ocean and gentle sea breezes came in off the veranda. We had stopped in to see what this music academy looked like and were treated to a very eclectic performance. May you be so fortunate. (And if you are a piano tuner, consider stopping in and offering... More

With my tourist friends we stumbled into the Dhow Countries Music Academy to find a music recital happening on the top floor overlooking Zanzibar's harbor. The academy's building is square and old with an interior patio. First, on the second floor we bought CDs of academy musicians--wonderful authentic recordings of local music. Second, we filed up to the third floor... More

Magical evening at the Dhow Countries Music Academy. Ricardo Gracia from Spain performed live romantic flamenco recitals. The show started with beautiful traditional Taarab music performed by the students and teachers of the academy , followed by Ricardo's performance and ended with a fusion piece between the academy students and Ricardo's. Truly an evening to remember.
