We traveled to Zanzibar 20 years ago and fondly remember the food market. However, this time we were disappointed - the food was mediocre at best and very overpriced. In addition, the stall holders are very over bearing in trying to get you to their stores and in certain instances we had two stall holders fighting with each other (once turning physical) about which stall we should buy our food from - upsetting for my kids and really spoiled the evening..

I have tested street food in a lot of countries. But this experience is the worst.
The food was dry and without any taste. If you don't ask the price for each steak you will be charged as in a good restaurant.
It doesn't even wort to taste.

It is recommended in all the guides and it was also recommended to us in the Hotel to go and eat "typical" and in a characteristic and typical place, with the locals, at the Forodhni Garden! As soon as you arrive, obviously you are attacked by all the operators of these stalls who in reality all have the exact same food to eat without the prices displayed; we stop in one at random, take a look and choose 6 skewers (4 fish and 2 meat) with chips, no drinks (fortunately) because we had our own water bottle...we ask the prices more than once but they continue to tell us that they will give us the bill later but in the meantime they prepare and tell us to sit on a wall; after a short wait they give us what we ordered.....after which, not knowing the cost, we decide not to take anything else (and luckily)...when we ask for the bill they tell us 103,000 shillings!!!! We try to negotiate but they don't want to know and they even want the 3000 shillings; We leave extremely disappointed, angry, absolutely convinced of the exaggerated mockery of the tourist... I'm sorry but it's really disgusting, in all 3 days in Stone Town we had the impression that they continually wanted to pluck us like chickens. ..bad feeling and bad memory of the city! We absolutely do not recommend it (otherwise disguise yourself as "locals")

The only people who are going to be impressed by any of this open air eating are those who've never had good street food and who just wish to pretend that this is what it is.
Ignoring the evident poor hygiene, most of this stuff has been sitting here for hours and is simply half warmed up for consumption.
Fearing the effects of tainted anonymous meats I tried some vegetable samosas. They were only half warmed, somehow still cold inside and one was near inedible from the amount of cloves that had been dumped into it.
I've had better food at McDonald's.
Most of the hawkers will constantly harass you to buy from them.
I'm glad I saw it but wouldn't go back.

They try to sell you a stick of prawna for 15k shylings (7usd) ... my wife did not asked for price before oredering and were to pay 40usd for few sticks of poor quality octopus...
just walk away. The worst are those that have stands near the entrences. Never buy there.
Walki inside. You shoul be able to feed 4 people for the price of 7usd and not pay it for a
Single stick.
Worst experience in Zanzibar.

Before you order any food, agree on a price first, otherwise walk away. The vendor wanted to charge me $25 for 3 sticks of meat, 1 chicken, 2 lobster. For $25 I could have had a whole lobster. I didn't pay that price. The couple next to me was charged $15 for 1 stick of meat. Even a Tanzanian woman was shocked by the price asked for her meal. The food is good, but not at those prices. Better to go to a restaurant and be served.

My favourite place at Forodhani is Zenji Garden Cafe, the middle kiosk on the waterfront. Especially during sunset when the foods stalls are preparing for the evening and the kids dive into the water. The coffee, fresh juices & breakfast is a great way to start your day, but they also serve very nice and fresh prepared lunch and dinner for a good price. I will definitely come back more often!

I didn't know what to expect here. We had a very late flight (3AM) leaving Zanzibar, and we didn't somewhere to go. We decided to come here late that evening (around 10PM) for dinner. It turned out to be a great last experience in Zanzibar and in Tanzania. While I had heard that it might be somewhat dangerous, the park had a family-friendly feel, with childrens' toys being sold along with the food vendors.
There were rows of food vendors with tables of various meat and seafood skewers ready to grill. They were all soliciting customers but not in an overly aggressive way. After deciding on one, we tried lobster, octopus and squid, and tuna. They brought the freshly grills items to us, and everything was very good. I wasn't sure how it would sit with me, but luckily no issues. Other members of my family had the shawarma, also available throughout the park. We also enjoyed freshly squeezed sugarcane juice, which came out to less than one dollar per cup.
If you are a foodie and enjoy exploring, I cannot recommend this place enough.
