a true hidden gem
Sep 2020
Driving around the area and stumbled across this sign for a museum in a three story old building which looked out of place in the area around the mall so my attention was grabbed.

I walked inside and was confronted by a general store layout with gift shop and nice display of doctor items from a local doctor whose family had a long history here.

From there, the tour starts on the first floor where we experience a harness maker's shop, cobbler, food service area and community room with items from surveyors and local history. I esp enjoyed seeing the hurdy-gurdy. This place is considered to be set up as an early mall where people traveling through could stable their horses, get shoes repaired, buy some goods and eat a meal. It was also a nice place for meetings and dances.

The second floor was extra space for stores and currently house a music room with old sheet music and instruments, railway items, millinery shop, Susan B Anthony display, flags on display, a science room for those that like old time electrical and phrenology and lastly a room dedicated to agriculture.

The final floor is the grand ballroom which saw a theatre, concerts, dances, etc. While pretty much bare, it does give a nice look back on the history of the building.

Outside there are some gardens to browse.

To truly appreciate upper floors, you need to be able to walk the stairs but otherwise this is a great museum collection for this area that I was not familiar with. The are open thru Sept and this weekend is the last til next year so it interested, please check it out.

This is a great place to support.

It’s a look at a late 1800’s general store and more. Great educational trip, especially for school kids.

America's first mall, complete with underground parking!

Well, if you're looking for ghosts, there's none here... it's a "ghost town" as in an abandoned town, like the ones out west that were left during the dust bowl days. But this is no dust bowl remnant, this has AMAZING history! It's the first "one stop shopping" structure in America, and an Oak Tree that was there even before that! The tour is very personalized (they are only open Sunday afternoons, June thru Sept, but they'll arrange a private tour. You just can't believe it when you get inside, it's like stepping through Alice's looking glass and going down the rabbit hole to 200 years ago. There's way too much to take in for one tour, been there many times and always something to see and be awed by. For a 100% volunteer run organization this place is a winner. Well, even if you can't make it to the physical properties, you can see quite a bit on the web site. Not *everything*, not even close, but quite a bit.

I have visited this intriguing (and supposedly haunted) museum on three different occasions, and I have yet to be able to get in! No one is ever there! (Maybe because it is haunted!) It's a great place to stroll the grounds, and the main building is 135 years old. Built in 1879, it has been used to accumulate much history from the area around Victor, as well as the city of Rochester. There are a few other buildings around there that are part of the complex as well.

I'm glad to see the Victor Historical Society stepped in and helped out by purchasing the facility. It's a great piece of this lineage of the town, and deserved to be preserved.

Cool place to visit with a TON of history. Its crazy to imagine all that went on in this large house within the last 200 years. I couldn't help but feeling 'strange' while I walked from room to room. The air sometimes felt stiff and then at moments it felt cold and breezy. It was quite freaky. I would totally recommend visiting this place, simply because it is rich with old tools of the trade, like a doctors "office" and a leathermans work station, etc... There is even a great ballroom upstairs. Spooky but totally worth the visit.

This building is a landmark amoungst all the commercialness of the Eastview Mall area. Behind Uno and The Northface. Thank Goodness it has been saved. Call ahead for hrs or check their website. Local history and some really cool stuff to look at.
