We are middle aged walkers, not hikers. We have been to all the major state parks within an hour of Ithaca 3-4 times. Taughannock is a very flat, 3/4 mile walk on a wide path, mostly in shade. There are sections where you can walk along the creek bed leading up to the Falls. There are also pretty little Falls close to the entrance where you can have a picnic or just relax. The Falls themselves drop over 200 feet, but it's a long, narrow waterfall off a cliff, so not as interesting as the formations in other waterfalls at Robert Treman or Watkins Glen (the best two state parks in the region, in my opinion). Easily 50% of park attendees were not wearing masks. We often pulled over and let people pass us. The lower level walkway is wide most of the way to the Falls, and it was not nearly as crowded as Watkins Glen or Robert Treman Parks this week. It normally costs $8/day to visit one or multiple NY state parks this year. The fee has been waived on weekdays through the end of October 2020 at Taughannock. There are porta potties in the lower level parking lot, but if you walk across the street, there is a lakefront park with bathrooms. There are also bathrooms, plus a staffed Visitor Center, at the Taughannock Falls Upper level Lookout (2+ miles up the road - drive there). At the Upper Level Outlook, you can see the Falls from the parking lot.Visited October 2020Traveled with familyWritten October 2, 2020
- Rads12342015New York34 contributionsGreat little hikeWe enjoyed visiting Taughannock Falls State Park. We came to visit on Sunday morning, around 9:30AM in the morning. The small parking lot by the Falls trail head was already full, but there was plenty of parking on the other side of the street by the marina and the Cayuga lake, so we parked there. It is only about 5 minutes walk across the big lawn and across the road to the gorge trail head, which would take us to the actual falls. On the lake side of the park, there is also a clean bathroom. We hiked to the falls, the trail is listed as 3/4 mile. Since it was August, and there was not much rain lately, the Taughannock Creek was half dry and it was possible to walk on the stony bottom of the creek bed, which was fun. We saw many people doing it. The falls itself were impressive and tall, but the water stream was weak, again not unexpected for the middle of Summer. Overall we spent 2 hours in this park, and we enjoyed every minute. We also got ice cream by the concession stand in the marina, which was delicious.Visited August 2020Written August 8, 2020
- jinxminxTakoma Park, Maryland381 contributionsvery cool and blessedly flat hikeWe hiked to Lucifer Falls in Robert Treman State Park in the morning, swam at the lower falls, then drove to Taughannock Falls State Park. We were trying to also do Buttermilk Falls State Park in the same day, but that turned out to be wildly ambitious. We were camping at Robert Treman so our pass got us into the other parks for free, which is cool. On the lake side of the park is a boat launch area with a lot of geese and seagulls, picnic area, etc. When you cross the street you can hike back to the falls. The falls themselves pretty much did the hike too - they used to be about where the road is now and have eroded back to their current position over thousands of years. Pretty cool. the gorge trail goes along the creek, which has limestone shelves with puddle depressions called solution pits. it looks really good and the creek is limestone with puddles on one side and water on the other, so you can walk on it for part of the hike, which is fun. there was a place in the creek with dozens and dozens of rock cairns. we saw a lot in the ithaca region in general, but this is where we saw the most. that also looked pretty cool. they are controversial because making them disturbs habitat and some people prefer not to see human influence in nature, but they look cool nonetheless. they are hard to photograph well. the waterfall itself is lovely, a long straight drop. apparently it's taller (though much narrower) than niagara falls, which is hard to believe, but that's what they say. there is a lovely curve of gorge wall right before the falls as well. pretty easy hike, interesting terrain, well worth it.Visited August 2019Written January 17, 2020

We only went there to see the falls. We had a good view from the overlook. There was not much water going over the falls when we were there. There is a trail you can take that takes you close to the base of the falls. The rest of the park looked like a nice place to camp & hike, but we left after we saw the falls.

We rented a cabin in the state park for 2 nights to enjoy the great offerings available at Taughannock Falls State Park - from walking the Gorge Trail and North Rim Trail to riding our bikes on the Black Diamond Trail. Our cabin with a lake view was rustic, but clean and fit our needs. The farmers market in Ithica was disappointing, but found Trumansburg Farmers Market on Wednesday night outstanding. The food at Glenwood Pines just south of the state park was excellent and a great price (plus a view of the lake as we ate).

We walked both the rim & gorge trails, which offer different vantage points for viewing the falls. Both trails are dog friendly. We returned on another day to swim in the lake. We weren’t as impressed with the small, crowded swimming area, but it was refreshing.

Love this park! We had a beautiful picnic lunch and rented kayaks. We swam in the lake, and my kids lived jumping off the dock. We walked to the falls. This park has it all.

We wanted to see the main falls, so we turned into the west parking lot south of the overlook trail lot, across from the main entrance. It is a full mile up to the main falls, but an easy walk with no steps and a gradual incline. You are walking along the wide rock stream bed, which would be good for wading lower down (not allowed closer to the falls). We saw lots of people walking dogs. It is a but muddy in places right now. Definitely worth the walk, but I was under the impression it was going to be shorter.

The hike to the falls from the parking lot was a gradual, paved path. We had opportunities to walk off the trail on the creek bed in spots. A lot of the trail is through shaded woods. At the end you cross over a bridge to see the falls. The falls vary in volume based on time of year and how much snow/rain the area has had. I recommend also taking the rim trail too. That has a fairly extensive set of steps to get to. The trail will take you to a spot where you have an aerial view of the falls, there are also bathrooms and a spot to eat. From there, keep following the trail to the upper falls. It’s a great walk and he upper falls are a great view too.

We visited this park twice. Both times parking was not an issue. The first time was on July 4th to hike and stay for fireworks. Let me say that the fireworks at home in PA are much better. They are longer and coordinated with the music. This felt mediocre and not worth dealing with the traffic Which by the way I’ve never been to an event with such poor traffic management following the event. As for the falls they are beautiful. Plus opposite the falls are the lake which I found very pretty. Vending machine by swimming area, which was closed due to algae bloom. Check Facebook page before going to see if swimming is open. On night of fire works concessions were shut down at normal time and it’s cask only so be prepared.

This is a magnificent falls and so photogenic, even on a rainy, dreary, misty day.
The walk to the waterfall is flat, along a river.
On a rainy day, it can be quite muddy.
The benefit of going on a rainy day is that the crowds are thin and the waterfall is cascading in abundance.
We had gone to this waterfall on a previous visit in August and it was a bare trickle, almost completely dry.
The scenery along the walk to the waterfall is lovely and one can capture great pictures.
There is a bridge to view the waterfall at the end of the trail, BUT, if one keeps going to the other bank, one can get closer to the waterfall for a better view.
There is also an overlook, where one can descend some stairs to a fantastic overview of the falls.
The day we were there, it was early evening, misty and hazy with smoke from Canadian wildfires. I can only imagine how gorgeous the view would be on a sunny, clear day .
The overlook has bathrooms and some little stores that were closed because we were there after hours.
There is also a lovely pollinator garden at the overlook, with a sign telling which plants to include if you are interested in making one of your own.
Parking is free at the overlook and $9 at the main parking lot.

I went here looking for a nice waterfall and I found it from the top of the lookout you can see the beautiful waterfall and a nice lower area to get up close to the waterfall. The Trai to the waterfall is walkable with strollers, and pets are able to cool off in the water . Bring water to drink . Park across the street from the entrance only $9:00 which can be used at other state parks during the same day .

We hiked out the falls and it did not disappoint. Easy mostly level hike well worth the journey. Reminded us a bit of Iceland waterfalls. The mist coming off was refreshing.

Heading to Taughannock falls later this week, anyone know what teh water flow is currently like?

They are supposed to get heavy rains today, so I would assume the water flow would continue to be impressive into the week
What about the food? Are there any restaurants available?

There is only one restaurant in the park and it is pretty pricey. However, Ithaca is only 20 minutes away and has tons of restaurants. I would recommend the Ithaca Beer Company and Gorgers Sub shop for some really good cheap eats. You can even go to the Cornell Campus, head to their Dairy Bar and have fresh ice cream made on campus.
Have fun!

Hi I am wondering if you can shed some light here I am a bit confused. If you take the gorge trail to the end where the waterfall comes down, you can cut into the upper falls trail or you just go back the same was you came to the parking lot ?

Both trails begin by the parking lot but separate. They do not intersect as one goes up around the rim.
Ciao, volevo sapere se è un percorso adatto a per dei bambini (6 e9 anni) e se è necessaria una attrezzatura particolare

Are there water and electricity in the tent sites?

The part of the park that's on Cayuga lake has both tent sites and cabins. I'm not sure of the amenities for the various camp sites and their website reveals nothing about it. Here is the park's phone number. You might reach out and ask there: (607) 387-6739.

The park is easily walkable. There is parking both at the upper falls overlook, and down by the lake when you walk to the falls from below. The walking paths are wide, level and have a packed gravel surface.
Sounds like you should bundle up for chilly weather.
