A steep but easy hike

We went after the official season ended. We left the car in the parking area at the bottom and walked up. There are cannon at strategic spots over looking Ft Ticonderoga but I am not sure they are the original ones. A map and interpretive sign in the shelter at the top explain the importance of the site. Apparently the Americans gave up the fort when they realized that they could be bombarded from above. No shots were fired.

Breathtaking view!

After visiting Ft. Ticonderoga, we drove up to Mt. Defiance. It is included in the admission fee to the fort. The view is amazing and it was especially beautiful during the peak of fall colors. I liked that we were able to see the fort from there. Well worth the extra time to check it out!

Nice aerial view of Ticonderoga
Sep 2020
With your paid admission to Fort Ticonderoga you receive access to the auto road to nearby Mount Defiance (just a 6-8 minute drive from the Fort). Beautiful views of the Fort and Lake Champlain. This spot is where the British were situated prior to the Battle of Carillon (7/8/1758) against the French. The following year the British captured the fort and renamed it Ticonderoga. In 1775 Americans led by Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen captured the Fort, only to be driven out by the British in 1777 as the British began hauling cannons up Mount Defiance preparing to bombard the Americans. Lots of history on this location

Great View, History
Sep 2019
Went up only because it was included in the Fort Ticonderoga admission, glad we did. A great view of the area at near peak foliage, wish it had been a clear day.

Not sure if I would want to take a car up it, the road is narrow, steep and rough.

Wow

A friend suggested it. $10 per car seemed on the high side but we went. View on the valley was breathtaking especially with the fall colors and Lake Champlain. We would return, not on the busy Columbus Day weekend. Small parking lot full. Probably 40 people at lookout and many with dogs. Steep climb from parking lot not for those who have trouble walking.

Drive slow, narrow road. Nice views. Makes for good pictures. For us it was worth the drive up. We wouldn't go a second time though.

The view is worth it.

This is the 2nd time I have been up to Mt Defiance and the view is spectacular. This time the experience was even better because an interpreter was present and enthusiastically shared his knowledge about the significance of the spot with regards to Fort Ticonderoga. Small parking area and a short but steep climb to the pavilion. Worth the exercise!

Great View Of Lake Champlain
Jul 2019 • Couples
The small pavilion at the top of Mt. Defiance offers a wonderful panorama of the southern end of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga. The drive to Mt. Defiance is not long and entry is included in the cost of visiting the fort. I think that it is well worth the effort. When mt wife and I visited the summit a tour was given by a guide from the Fort. He was very enthusiastic and full of information. He brought the landscape alive from the history of the fortification and the French, British and American occupiers.
