The grounds are lovely to walk, the gardens weeded and well cared for, the docents friendly, knowledgeable, and love questions! A tour of the house brings you right back to earlier times. Much of what I heard here made me curious about the history of...More

Our tour guide made a great presentation on Washington Irving's life and the unique features of his home. She mentioned the train that cut off the property from the Hudson River in Washington Irving's time. Five trains passed by during our tour to emphasize this...More

My guide was dressed elegantly in hoop skirt and explained how Washington Irving designed Sunnyside and its grounds himself, collaborating with his neighbor, the artist George Harvey. "It is a beautiful spot," Irving wrote, "capable of being made a little paradise." Beginning in 1835, he...More

Having once been Washington Irving's residence, this little mansion is so romantic, so filled with a sense of history, I highly recommend it to anyone in the area. They often have period character hosts to compliment the history of the mansion. The Hudson River views...More

History and literature buffs should make the trip and revel in the details. It's amazing that so much of the original furnishings and facility remain. It's much as it was when the author lived there. That said, there's a limited amount to see and it's...More

Charming cottage. Tour guide excellent. Gift shop needs to get a book on the history, and design, etc... of Sunnyside.

We toured this the same day as Lyndhurst. It is a very quaint and well done site. There was a lot of history to be told here and the guide did a great job. My only complaint was that the guide had a difficult time...More

Must-see for fans of Sleepy Hollow or Irving's other very underrated contributions to American literature, but most interesting as a window into a very interesting period in American and New York history. Bring your own lunch and enjoy the river views.
